King Louis IX of France (later canonized as Saint Louis) ordered the burning of copies of the Talmud in the 13th century. ๐๐ฅ
What happened:
โขIn 1240, a public debate known as the Disputation of Paris was held in Paris.
โขThe accusations against the Talmud were brought by Nicholas Donin, a jewish convert to Christianity who claimed the text contained insults against Christianity.
โขFour leading rabbis defended the Talmud before the king and church officials.
The result:
โขAfter the trial, the Talmud was declared guilty of blasphemy by Christian authorities.
โขIn 1242, Louis IX ordered the confiscated manuscripts burned in Paris.
โขAbout 24 wagonloads of handwritten books (roughly 10,000โ12,000 volumes) were destroyed publicly.
