Jessica Aber, the former US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, was found dead on Saturday morning. She was discovered unresponsive at her home by Alexandria Police officers just before 9:20 AM. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of her death. Jessica Aber, 43, was well-known for her work on significant cases involving leaks within the CIA and Russian nationals involved in fraud.

Aber resigned in January when President Trump took office, following her nomination by President Biden. One of her notable court victories was the guilty plea from ex-CIA analyst Asif Rahman, who leaked top-secret documents about a planned Israeli strike on Iran last year. Rahman's actions were condemned by Aber as they risked lives, damaged U.S. foreign relations, and undermined the nation's intelligence capabilities.
Aber also prosecuted Eleview International Inc., a Virginia-based company, for illegal schemes to ship sensitive American technology to Russia, with senior executives Oleg Nayandin and Vitaliy Borisenko at the helm. The Justice Department accused them of shipping over $6 million worth of goods to Russia through countries like Turkey, Finland, and Kazakhstan to avoid U.S. sanctions imposed after Russia invaded Ukraine. This case followed AberтАЩs previous indictments against two Russian nationals, Sergey Ivanov and Timur Shakhmametov, for their involvement in a major online money laundering operation supporting cybercrime and hackers targeting U.S. financial infrastructure.

Beyond these cases, Aber played a role in the DOJ's charges against four Russian soldiers accused of committing war crimes against an American in Ukraine. The indictment described the kidnapping, torture, and mock execution of the victim by commanding officers Suren Seiranovich Mkrtchyan and Dmitry Budnik, along with two lower-level soldiers known only as Valerii and Nazar.

Born and raised in Virginia, Jessica Aber graduated from the University of Richmond in 2003 and earned her law degree from William & Mary Law School in 2006. She served as an assistant US attorney since 2009 before becoming the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. Aber also worked in the DOJтАЩs Criminal Division from 2015 to 2016 as counsel to the assistant attorney general. Throughout her career, she focused on restoring public trust in law enforcement, traveling extensively around Virginia to meet and speak with local communities.

In one of her final LinkedIn posts, Aber shared a photo from a 2024 conference with US attorneys, highlighting the good memories from the event. The current US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Erik Siebert, mourned her passing, praising Aber as an unmatched leader, mentor, and irreplaceable human being. US Attorney General Pamela Bondi expressed condolences, describing Aber's death as a deeply tragic loss and offering thoughts and prayers to her family and friends during this difficult time.
