A former Mormon missionary has been arrested in Pittsburgh for allegedly sexually abusing at least 14 young boys while serving in Tonga before attempting to escape justice by fleeing the country using a fake identity.
William James Purdy, 28, of West Valley, Utah, was taken into custody Thursday following a federal indictment handed down July 16, the Department of Justice announced.
Purdy allegedly lured boys into his apartment with gifts including electronic devices, toys, food and money - before exploiting them for sexual exchanges.

Many of the children who came across the border unaccompanied were allowed to be placed with sponsors who were actually smugglers and sex traffickers. The Trump Administration has located 13,000 of these children.
In March 2025, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) identified a backlog of more than 65,000 reports regarding children who came across the border unaccompanied that were ignored during the Biden administration.

Yesterday at around 9:47 AM, authorities received a distress call from 5516 Timothy Drive; responding San Diego Police officers found a woman, suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper torso, and they attempted to provide aid, but they soon discovered a man in another room who had sustained a gunshot wound to his head, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Seven people have been charged in connection with an alleged sex trafficking operation that Alabama officials say was run out of a concrete bunker and involved children as young as 3.
The case includes charges of rape, sexual torture, kidnapping, and human trafficking, and officials allege the abuse took place in a cinder block building in Brent, Alabama, 50 miles southwest of Birmingham, Bibb County Sheriff Jody Wade said at a news conference Wednesday.
He called the alleged abuse and torture “the most horrible thing I’ve ever seen” perpetrated against children.
“I know god’s forgiveness is boundless,” Wade said. “But if there was a limit to it, I think we’ve reached it.”
He said the operators of the sex abuse ring charged people to come to the bunker and abuse the children, adding that the operation may have made $1,000 a night.
“Sometimes, the children would be there, tied to a pole that was there, bound to a bed that was there, or in a chair that was there,” Wade said. “Sometimes, there would be multiple people that would come by and victimize these children on a nightly basis.”
