CONVICTED MURDERER SEEN VAPING AND FLIPPING MIDDLE FINGER BEFORE SENTENCE.

A Forrest County jury on Wednesday convicted Juan Cole in the 2021 shooting death of Carlos McGruder outside the Holiday Inn on U.S. Highway 49 in Hattiesburg.
Following the conviction, the court sentenced Cole to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The shooting occurred in November 2021 in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn along Highway 49. Evidence presented during trial showed that Cole was acting as a pimp and became enraged after a woman working for him was allegedly assaulted and robbed.

After learning about the incident, prosecutors said Cole ran into the hotel parking lot and encountered McGruder, who was leaving the area. Authorities said that McGruder was not the individual accused of assaulting or robbing the woman, but had also arrived to meet with her.

Investigators testified that Cole opened fire, shooting approximately 14 rounds and killing McGruder at the scene.

Cole also took the stand in his own defense during the trial, admitting to firing the rounds that killed McGruder. Video of Cole’s courtroom testimony is available for Facebook subscribers.

After the killing, Cole fled and remained on the run for several years before ultimately being apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service in Oklahoma in August 2025.

One of the more unusual moments following Wednesday’s verdict came inside the courtroom itself. After jurors returned the guilty verdict — but before sentencing was handed down several minutes later — Cole was seen on video vaping in court and flipping the middle finger at media.

The conviction closes one of Hattiesburg’s more high-profile homicide cases in recent years, a case that involved a lengthy fugitive search before finally making its way to trial.
