The question everyone asks about Ross Perot is: “How would the outcome of the 1992 election have been different if he wasn’t in the race?”

The conventional wisdom is that George H.W. Bush would have won. Perot, an independent candidate, was a former Republican and ran on a conservative economic message. He won almost 20 percent of the popular vote. Most of his support would have gone to Bush, right?

In the latest installment in our documentary podcast series re-examining past presidential elections, we dig through the archives and talk to people involved in all three 1992 campaigns to suss out Perot’s true impact on the race. We found an answer to our original question — “What would’ve happened if Ross Perot didn’t run?” — but we also found ourselves asking an even more complicated question: “What would have happened if Ross Perot had run as a major-party candidate?”

Donald Trump’s candidacy gives us glimpse of what might have happened if Perot had run within the two party system. Both Perot and Trump ran as political outsiders, successful businessmen and populists. Their messages were simple. In Perot’s case, the national debt was “destroying the country,” and in Trump’s case, illegal immigration is “destroying the country.” Both men were protectionist on trade and said they would demand U.S. allies pay more for defense. But many of their policy proposals were vague or nonexistent.

Both the Perot and Trump campaigns relied on their candidate’s charisma, a simple message and a successful media strategy. Perot was an early darling of cable TV news, frequently appearing on talk shows like “Larry King Live.” He was also willing to harness unusual media strategies — he even did 30-minute infomercials, complete with charts. Trump’s presence on American television has been so ubiquitous that by March one firm that tracks advertising estimated he had received $2 billion worth of free media.

Both campaigns broke completely with political norms and proved surprisingly resilient in the face of prodding journalism and suggestions that the candidates were unfit to be president.

As Democratic strategist James Carville put it, “If Donald Trump is the kind of Jesus of the disenchanted, displaced non-college white voter, then Perot was the John the Baptist of that sort of movement.”

The difference is: Perot ran outside the two-party system. Nearly 20 million people cast a ballot for him, but he didn’t win a single vote in the Electoral College. Trump has run within the system. He got 13 million votes in the Republican primary, enough to win the nomination, and enough to put him within striking distance of the White House.

“Even though Americans say that they’re not partisan, they still have a home,” said Republican pollster Frank Luntz. “They still start by being a Republican or a Democrat and then they move based on the candidates or the environment of that election.”

Since 1992, the common narratives about Perot have been that he was a spoiler (unlikely) or that he was an anomaly (the most successful third-party candidate since 1912, at least in terms of the share of the popular vote won). But Trump’s rise suggests that Perot, a charismatic populist, may have been something else: a harbinger.

In Ghislaine Maxwell’s child sex-trafficking trial, Manhattan federal prosecutors shared a simple, chilling message with jurors in their opening statement: “She knew what was going to happen to those girls.”

Maxwell “preyed on vulnerable young girls, manipulated them and served them up to be sexually abused” by Jeffrey Epstein, said prosecutor Lara Pomerantz. “The defendant was trafficking kids for sex.

Ghislaine Maxwell continues to have the backing of her family, and a family member will be in court at all times to show their support, Ian Maxwell said in an interview ahead of the trial, which is set to begin Nov. 29 in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.

“Maxwell was Epstein’s best friend and right hand,” Pomerantz said of the late financier, who was arrested in July 2019 in relation to sexually abusing teen girls. “She was involved in every detail of Epstein’s life. The defendant and Epstein were partners in crime.

“She used the same excuse over and over to get the girls to touch Epstein – massage,” Pomerantz argued. “You’ll learn the cover of massage was the primary way the defendant and Epstein lured girls into sexual abuse.

“The defendant massaged Epstein in front of the girls, then encouraged the girls to massage Epstein,” she said. “But what was happening inside those massage rooms was not a massage – it was sexual abuse.

“Sometimes she was even in the room for the massages herself and sometimes, she touched the girls’ bodies,” Pomerantz continued. “And even when she was not in the room, make no mistake: she knew exactly what Epstein was going to do to those children when she sent them to him inside the massage rooms.”

Maxwell, 59 and the daughter of the late British press baron Robert Maxwell, has pleaded not guilty on six counts related to her alleged involvement in Epstein’s abuse of minors, some as young as 14 years old.

“When the defendant sent a 14-year-old girl [to] an adult man, she knew exactly what was going to happen,” Pomerantz said.

“She knew exactly what she was doing. She was dangerous,” Pomerantz also remarked. “She was setting young girls up to be molested by a predator.”

Bobbi Sternheim, Maxwell’s lead attorney, used an Old Testament flourish in arguing that Maxwell was getting punished for Epstein’s misdeeds.

“Ever since Eve was accused of tempting Adam for the apple, women have been blamed for the bad behavior of men, and women are often villainized and punished more than the men ever are,” Sternheim said in her opening statement. “The charges against Ghislaine Maxwell are for things that Jeffrey Epstein did.

“But she is not Jeffrey Epstein. She is not like Jeffrey Epstein – and she is not like any of the other men, powerful men, moguls, media giants, who abuse women.”

The indictment cites four accusers – referred to as Minor Victim-1, Minor Victim-2, Minor Victim-3 and Minor Victim-4. Epstein killed himself in a Manhattan federal jail in August 2019, while awaiting trial. Maxwell’s alleged crimes took place from 1994 to 2004, prosecutors have said.

In court on Monday, Maxwell wore a cream-colored sweater and black pants. When she first walked into the courtroom at about 8.30am local time, Maxwell lifted her eyebrows and acknowledged her sister, who was seated in the first row.

An Epstein accuser, Sarah Ransome, arrived at the courthouse shortly before proceedings began, telling reporters: “I never thought this day would come.”

During the lunch break, which came before opening statements, a group gathered outside the courthouse for a purported rally against sex trafficking, though the comments were largely conspiratorial.

A speaker, using a megaphone, said Epstein “didn’t kill himself”. One attendee sported a red-and-white cap, similar to those worn by supporters of Donald Trump, that said the same thing.

Some protesters set up a tent to facilitate the distribution of stickers, some of which expressed skepticism about Covid-19. One woman held a sign that read: “COVID IS NOT A PANDEMIC BUT A HUMAN TRAFFICKING” [issue], along with the words “Illegal Organ Harvesting”.

Audrey Strauss, acting Manhattan US attorney at the time, contended that Maxwell “played a critical role in helping Epstein to identify, befriend and groom minor victims” and that “in some cases, Maxwell participated in the abuse”.

Most children and adolescents do not have COVID-19 antibodies in their blood after recovering from a coronavirus infection, new data has confirmed.
Starting in October 2020, researchers in the US state of Texas recruited 218 subjects between the ages of five and 19 who had recovered from COVID infections at some point in the past.
Each provided three blood samples, at three-month intervals.
More than 90 per cent were unvaccinated when they enrolled in the study.
The first blood test showed infection-related antibodies in only one-third of the children, the researchers reported, while six months later only half of those with the antibodies still had them.
The study was designed to detect the presence of antibodies, which are only one component of the immune system's defences, not the amount of antibodies.
The level of protection even in those with antibodies is unclear.
Researchers found no differences based on whether a child was asymptomatic, severity of symptoms, when they had the virus or due to weight or gender.
"It was the same for everyone," Sarah Messiah of UTHealth School of Public Health Dallas, said in a statement.
"Some parents ... think just because their child has had COVID-19, they are now protected and don't need to get the vaccine.
"We have a great tool available to give children additional protection by getting their vaccine."

On June 8, 1967, Israeli war planes and torpedo boats attacked the USS Liberty, an intelligence gathering ship, while it was on a signals collections mission in international waters off the Sinai Peninsula during the Six-Day War.
It was the first attack on a U.S. navy vessel since Pearl Harbor, and the first attack on America by a Middle East nation. Of the 294-member crew, 34 Americans died and 174 were wounded during an attack that lasted as long as the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The ship, armed only with four machine guns, was first strafed by Israel Defense Forces aircraft, which took out its communication antennas so it could not radio for help. The Liberty was then bombed, hit with napalm and torpedoed.
It remains the only peacetime attack on a U.S. naval vessel that Congress formally refuses to investigate. As a result, some believe North Korea was emboldened to seize the USS Pueblo on Jan. 23, 1968, as that intelligence engaged in routine surveillance.
Israel claimed it mistook the Liberty for an enemy vessel. Surviving crewmen say that was not possible.

The mystery is how Johnson knew the attackers were Israelis. Not even the crewmen knew their attackers' identities because unmarked aircraft were used.

Bryan Malinowski, the executive director of Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport/Adams Field who was shot in the head by federal officers in a shootout Tuesday morning, has died, according to a statement from the airport.
"With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of our executive director Bryan Malinowski," said Bill Walker, chair of the Little Rock Municipal Airport Commission. "Bryan was a 16-year employee of the airport. Under his leadership, our airport has experienced significant growth and success, expanding services and offerings to our community and state."
He also offered condolences to Malinowski's family and friends.
Malinowski, 53, was left brain dead after being injured in a shootout with officers from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives around 6 a.m. Tuesday.
He opened fire on the officers as they attempted to serve a search warrant at his home, located in West Little Rock at 4 Durance Court.
His older brother, Matthew Malinowski, said in an interview Wednesday that Bryan Malinowski had been shot "with a high-caliber round."
It is not yet known why the ATF was serving the warrant.
“As you may know, this remains an active and on-going ATF and (Arkansas State Police) investigation that will be submitted to the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” a ATF spokesperson said in a statement.
Malinowski had served as executive director of the airport since 2019.
Originally from Pennsylvania, he earned a bachelor’s degree in aviation management from the Florida Institute of Technology and was a certified flight instructor, according to his bio on the airport’s website.
He joined the Little Rock airport in 2008 as the director of properties, planning and development after working for airports in Florida, Texas and Pennsylvania.
Malinowski went on to spend a decade as deputy executive director under then-Executive Director Ron Mathieu.
When Mathieu resigned in 2019 to take another job, Malinowski was named interim executive director.
“This is so very important to me,” Malinowski said from the dais after receiving the nod, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported at the time. “As an aviation professional, I do realize all the hard work by the people that surround you are what make you. I hope to do the very best we can not to miss a beat.”
The Airport Commission gave Malinowski the job on a permanent basis in November 2019.
Malinowski led the airport during the covid-19 pandemic, when air travel plummeted for a period of time.
During meetings of the Airport Commission — a fractious group prone to squabbling with one another over procedure — the understated, bespectacled Malinowski remained even-handed with regard to disagreements among his seven bosses, at least in public.
His base annual salary was close to $264,000, making him the highest-paid official working for the city of Little Rock or the city’s quasi-independent entities.
