Bill S. Esquire - … I got nothin. Gonna vomit and go to work

A kids' TV show featuring completely nude adults answering questions about the human body has sparked fury in Holland.

An advert for the programme called 'Simply Naked', which is set to be televised by the public broadcaster NOS, showed a group of adults disrobing in front of an audience of children.

The boys and girls, aged between 10 and 12, were invited to ask questions on subjects such as how confident the adults felt in their own bodies.

The series' developers say it has been 'very carefully produced,' is intended to educate children about the human body and that there are no questions about sex.

But critics have branded it 'disgusting,' with the leader of the right-wing FvD party Thierry Baudet saying it 'comes close to promoting paedophilia'.

Left-wing MP Tunahan Kuzu called the programme 'ridiculous' and told his Twitter followers to write to the national broadcaster to complain.

The conservative SGP party has also asked questions in parliament over why the programme is going ahead.

It comes after a preview of the series aired which showed the varying reactions of the children and some of the questions which they put to the adults.

One of the children said: 'This is not a show I need to see.'

While another told the broadcaster: 'It's good to know that other people worry about the same things too.'

TV presenter Edson da Graça told NOS: 'The aim is to teach children that each and every body is different and that not all bodies are perfect.'

Elsbeth Reitzema from the Rutgers sexual health foundation, which collaborated with NOS to produce the series, said that the steady stream of semi-pornographic images which children see everyday on television and online gave them a distorted view of the human body.

'Those who see ordinary naked bodies more often have a more positive body image,' she said.

The public broadcaster said in a statement: 'The children knew exactly what was going to happen and they could say how they felt during the programme at any time. ... We had expected a bit of a ruckus. Not everyone will think this is for children and that's OK. It's up to the parents to decide if their children can watch.'

The series is based on the Danish kids' TV show Ultra smider tøjet (Ultra strips down), which is now into its second series.

It has been popular in Denmark, although not without criticism, where many believe that children should be exposed to the realities of life - so-called 'Nordic parenting'.

'We recognise the significance of a bruise,' Sofie Münster, a parenting expert told the New York Times in October. 'Danish parenting generally favours exposing children rather than shielding them.'

A particularly famous example is how children were given front row seats to observe as a giraffe was euthanized, dissected and then fed to lions at Copenhagen Zoo in 2014.

'This is how we educate our children,' Münster said. 'We show them reality as it is.'

On the other hand, the conservative Danish People's Party has argued against the show.

Party chairman Peter Skaarup said in September that it is 'completely wrong and far too extreme.'

He added: 'Shouldn't we just let children be children?

'It corrupts our children, who at that age already have many things running around in their heads. There is no need for these things on top.'

⁣Mike Tyson and Father Time caught up with Larry Holmes tonight.

Holmes, 38 years old and a grandfather, could not withstand the furious assault of Tyson. He knocked Holmes down three times in the fourth round of a scheduled 12-round heavyweight title bout before Referee Joe Cortez stopped the fight 5 seconds before the end of the round.

Tyson, the undisputed champion, was the aggressor throughout the bout, but it was not until that fourth round that he caught up with the clinching, retreating Holmes.

Then, with one booming right hand, Tyson put Holmes into deep trouble. The right landed flush on the chin of Holmes, who dropped onto the seat of his trunks, in Tyson's corner.

Holmes got to his feet by the count of 4 and grabbed the ropes as Cortez gave him the mandatory 8-count. Then Holmes shook his head several times to clear it and let go of the ropes as Tyson came forward.

Tyson winged lefts and rights, trying to open up Holmes and land the finishing shot. A big right by Tyson sent Holmes lurching into the ropes and down again.

This time Holmes was up at the count of 5.

Tyson seemed intent on ending the fight, throwing and landing one punch after another, some of them causing Holmes's head to snap back. By now, ringsiders were shouting, "Stop the fight!"

The fight went on. Holmes retreated, Tyson pursued.

Another heavy right by Tyson dropped Holmes in his tracks. As soon as Holmes fell backward onto the canvas, Cortez waved an end to the bout.

"I just felt I didn't have to bother counting," Cortez said afterward. "I pulled out his mouthpiece and got out the way so the doctor could look him over. Larry was all right. He rose to a sitting position and told everybody, "I'm O.K." O.K., in this case, was relative.

Through 50 previous fights, Holmes had been knocked off his feet on occasion, but this marked the first time that he was knocked out.

Tonight he fought as if he were aware of his vulnerability. In the first two rounds, he concentrated on defense, holding Tyson off with an outstretched arm, or drawing him into a clinch when Tyson charged forward.

On occasion, when Tyson missed with his wide arcing punches, Holmes quickly stepped to the side, out of the way.

In the third round, Holmes became more offense-minded, trying to use his jab as he had in his prime. Holmes even danced on his toes, drawing a cheer from the crowd.

"The people were more excited than I was," Tyson said later. "The crowd got pumped up and Larry let his ego get involved. I said, "Now he's going to get it." Tyson said that even as a champion, Holmes was susceptible to the right hand.

"He made the same mistake back then," Tyson said. What was the mistake? "He always kept his left hand low."

Tyson made him pay dearly for the mistake. And with the first knockdown, he said, "I knew he wasn't going to finish the round."

Holmes did not appear at the post-fight news conference. But Larry Merchant, who interviewed him immediately after the fight as part of the telecast of the bout, said: "Larry Holmes was very generous in his praise of Tyson. He said he was a much sharper puncher than he thought. Toward the end, he got into a very philosophical mood. He said, "They always get you and some day they'll get him."

Earlier this week, Tyson said that while doing roadwork as a teen-age amateur boxer, he used to fantasize about beating Holmes.

With the victory, Tyson will begin campaigning abroad. He is scheduled to fight next on March 21 in Tokyo against Tony Tubbs.

Earlier today, Bill Cayton, co-manager of Tyson with Jim Jacobs, said that there was a chance Bruno would be deferred to a later date if Butch Lewis, Michael Spinks's promoter, can quickly come to terms on a deal for a Tyson-Spinks match.

Lewis and Spinks attended the fight tonight. Cayton said there was a possibility that meetings with Lewis would be held over the weekend.

"Butch Lewis has to know that if the fight is made, he cannot be promoter or co-promoter," Cayton said. That pre-condition has been an obstacle in negotiations with Lewis. But with the leverage of managing the champion, Cayton and Jacobs are in a position to enforce their terms.

Should Lewis and Tyson's managers resolve their differences (a slim possibility, Cayton said), a Tyson-Spinks bout would probably take place in June.

For Tyson, the Holmes fight was the first in a new seven-bout $26.5 million deal with Home Box Office, the cable television network.

For fighting Holmes, Cayton said, Tyson was guaranteed $3 million, contradicting earlier reports that Tyson's guarantee was more than $5 million. But Cayton said that with Tyson's percentages of fight-related incomes, his share would be considerably increased.

⁣Holmes was reportedly guaranteed $3.1 million.

⁣M101 News - Pro-life journalist beaten and assaulted during a street interview by a pro-abortion activist. Savannah Craven was working with Live Action conducting man on the street interviews, asking "Do you know what Planned Parenthood does?" when she was attacked.

Source: https://x.com/M101NewsOrg/stat....us/19079895729878141

The pro-life activist sucker punched during an interview on a Harlem street is struggling after the shocking violence — which she said was emblematic of the entire pro-choice movement.

“A lot of the pro-abortion movement is violence and abortion is violence, therefore it breeds violence,” Savannah Craven Antao, a 23-year-old reporter for advocacy group Live Action, fumed in a Saturday interview with The Post.

The woman who socked Craven Antao during the on-camera interview about Planned Parenthood is still on the loose, and the NYPD couldn’t say whether there were any leads in the case.

Craven Antao is nursing a swollen black left eye, two stitches below her eyebrow, significant pain in her nasal area and a heavy psychological burden after the Thursday incident.

“Mentally, I’m kind of struggling. I am having a lot of stress — just flashbacks about what happened to me,” she explained.

“Every time I go on my phone and I open any social media, I see the video of myself being assaulted. And it’s like I go back to the moment. It’s terrifying.”

Craven Antao claims the mystery assailant had approached her with an interest in being featured during her man-on-the-street interviews.

The woman, who wore a brown shirt, beige jacket and Louis Vuitton bag, initially complimented Craven Antao’s dress and her cameraman husband’s “skin tone,” the interviewer told The Post.

The conversation soured, however, as the two butted heads over abortion.

The assailant made it clear she was pro-choice and the two agreed there were options other than abortion for women who don’t want to get pregnant or carry a pregnancy to term, including adoption and practicing safe sex, video of the six-minute encounter showed.

Things took a turn for the weird when Craven Antao asked whether foster kids should be killed because “they’re not wanted,” and the assailant said, “Why not?”

“Who’s going to take care of them? I need to know the percentage of people who take children from foster care and abuse them and molest them, who make them personal slaves. I need specifics before you come to talk to me about pro-life,” the assailant said.

“If I don’t want to have a baby I should have the choice to have the baby or not,” she continued before calling Craven Antao “dumb as f–k” for suggesting women simply refrain from having sex. “That’s not logical.”

Craven Antao fired back, saying: “I’m not the one who admitted they would be OK with killing babies in foster care and killing children that have been abused.”

“That’s not the point. What I’m saying is …” the interviewee began before Craven Antao snatched the mic away while her subject was talking, according to the footage.

That’s when the woman unleashed a combo of punches directly to Craven Antao’s face and quickly stalked away.

“She decked me right in the face absolutely out of nowhere. Totally came out of left field, would never have expected it,” Craven Antao told The Post.

It was the most violent encounter Craven Antao has experienced on the job, noting she’s been spit on in the past, yelled at, and told by some she should be raped, get pregnant and forced to give birth.

“There’s probably a lot of people that want to hit me, but it takes a lot for you to just assault someone for different opinions. I mean, apparently not for somebody like her. If she was going to do this on camera and didn’t care that there was a camera recording her, then you can imagine what she does off camera,” Craven Antao said.

The Live Action reporter — who can be seen in video of the incident repeatedly cutting off her assailant as the woman spoke — insisted she “didn’t do anything that provoked” her attacker.

“I believe that this woman was hurt,” Craven Antao said.

“We want justice, but we also want to pray for this woman because she is obviously going through something a lot deeper. I have no words.”

⁣Engel v. Vitale | The First Amendment Encyclopedia (mtsu.edu)

⁣Engel v. Vitale (1962)
By David L. Hudson Jr.
Related cases in Public Schools and Religion, Establishment Clause

This 1962 photo shows some of the parents and children who brought suit against public schoolroom prayer in Engel v. Vitale (1962). In this case, the Supreme Court said the prayer violated the First Amendment. (AP Photo, used with permission from the Associated Press)
In Engel v. Vitale, 370 U.S. 421 (1962), the Supreme Court ruled that school-sponsored prayer in public schools violated the establishment clause of the First Amendment. The case involved a 22-word nondenominational prayer recommended to school districts by the New York Board of Regents: “Almighty God, we acknowledge our dependence upon Thee, and we beg Thy blessings upon us, our parents, our teachers and our Country.”
Parents said officially sponsored school prayer violated the First Amendment
The Union Free School District in New Hyde Park, N.Y., adopted the recommendation and instituted a practice whereby teachers led students in the prayer every morning. The practice was voluntary, and students could be excused without punishment upon written request from their parents.
Steven Engel and several other parents challenged the officially sponsored prayer as a violation of the First Amendment. Engel, a Jewish man, believed that the state should not impose a one-size-fits-all prayer upon children of many different faiths or no faith. The plaintiffs lost before the Supreme Court of New York in 1959, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of New York in 1960, and the Court of Appeals of New York in 1961, none of which viewed the prayer practice as the establishment of an official religion.
Engel and the others appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of the parents in a 6-1 vote (Justices Felix Frankfurter and Byron R. White did not participate).
Supreme Court struck down the prayer
Writing for the majority, Justice Hugo L. Black focused on the history of religious discrimination and intolerance in England and the early Colonial days of the United States. This history, according to Black, showed that by the time of the adoption of the U.S. Constitution Americans had a “widespread awareness . . . of the dangers of a union of Church and State.”
Black did not cite a single U.S. Supreme Court case in the text of his majority opinion, although he cited Everson v. Board of Education (1947) in a footnote. Instead, he cited a variety of secondary sources on the history and struggle for religious liberty. According to Black, “the First Amendment was added to the Constitution to stand as a guarantee that neither the power nor the prestige of the Federal Government would be used to control, support or influence the kinds of prayer the American people can say.”
Black concluded that “government in this country should stay out of the business of writing or sanctioning official prayers and leave that purely religious function to the people.”
Justice William O. Douglas wrote a concurring opinion, contending that “once government finances a religious exercise it inserts a divisive influence into our communities.”
Justice Potter Stewart wrote the lone dissent. He argued that the majority “misapplied a great constitutional principle” and denied public schoolchildren “the opportunity of sharing in the spiritual heritage of our Nation.” He noted that history and tradition showed many religious influences and elements in society, such as “In God We Trust” on the nation’s money, opening sessions of the Supreme Court with “God Save This Honorable Court,” the opening prayers in Congress, and the many acknowledgments of God by various presidents in public speeches.
Decision caused public outrage and criticism
The decision caused outrage among many and harsh criticism of the Warren Court. Engel said that he and his family members suffered obscene phone calls, taunts, and community ostracism.
The decision led the Court to strike down similar school-sponsored prayers in the consolidated cases of Abington School District v. Schempp and Murray v. Curlett (1963).
Principles of Engel have been extended to other cases
The principles of Engel have been extended by Court decisions invalidating an Alabama law requiring a moment of silence that appeared to have been rewritten specifically to encourage school prayer in Wallace v. Jaffree (1985), a middle school graduation school prayer in Lee v. Weisman (1992), and prayer at high school football games in Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe (2000).
David L. Hudson, Jr. is a law professor at Belmont who publishes widely on First Amendment topics. He is the author of a 12-lecture audio course on the First Amendment entitled Freedom of Speech: Understanding the First Amendment (Now You Know Media, 2018). He also is the author of many First Amendment books, including The First Amendment: Freedom of Speech (Thomson Reuters, 2012) and Freedom of Speech: Documents Decoded (ABC-CLIO, 2017). A Santa Barbara County judge accused of pulling a gun during a drunken confrontation with her domestic partner had started drinking heavily because of growing career and personal problems, her former lover testified Wednesday.
Deidra Dykeman, a project manager for Raytheon, struggled visibly to constrain her emotions as she recounted a relationship with Superior Court Judge Diana R. Hall.
“I was in love, I fell in love,” Dykeman, 39, said of her feelings for Hall after they first met in 1988.

But their relationship began to deteriorate after they bought a house together in the Santa Ynez Valley, Dykeman said. An early turning point, she said, was Hall’s anger over failure to win some law enforcement endorsements in a primary election last year.

Hall, 52, suffers from Crohn’s disease, a chronic bowel disorder, and did not start drinking until after the election, Dykeman said.

“She was probably drinking a bottle of wine a night,” she said.

Hall’s anger finally exploded Dec. 21 when an argument turned into alleged threats of violence triggered by a 911 call by Dykeman to the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department.

“I had never seen her so angry before in my life,” Dykeman told Assistant Dist. Atty. Kimberly Smith.

Though defense lawyer Jack Earley has portrayed Dykeman as a vengeful liar, angry at being spurned by Hall, Dykeman said Wednesday she was the one seeking to end the relationship.

“I told her the weekend before that we should think of breaking up because of the drinking,” Dykeman said.

Hall is charged with felony counts of dissuading a witness by force with a firearm and damaging a telephone to block a 911 call. She also faces misdemeanor charges of exhibiting a gun, domestic battery, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a blood alcohol content more than .08. Her blood alcohol level was .18.

Hall won the 2002 election with 85% of the vote. She was presiding criminal judge in Lompoc. Since her arrest, she has been suspended with pay.

Earlier, Tammy Gilbert, a sheriff’s communications dispatcher, recounted the 911 calls from Dykeman, who initially called but then hung up. Gilbert then called her back. At that time, Dykeman said she thought the dispute had “been resolved.”

About a minute later, however, she called back asking for help.

“My domestic partner is going after me.... She’s pulling my hair, she’s hitting me, she’s swearing at me. She’s throwing the phone, telling me to get out of the house.”

When asked if Hall was in possession of a gun, Dykeman first said that Hall was unarmed. Soon after, however, she told the dispatcher, “She’s got the gun. I’m sorry. She’s got the gun. Oh god, she’s got a gun. I’m really scared now.”

Sheriff’s deputies were already headed to the house when Dykeman announced that Hall had driven away in a gold Acura. Spotting the car, they pulled her over at gunpoint and handcuffed her.

Senior Deputy Mark Ream, one of six witnesses testifying Wednesday, said he interviewed Dykeman for about half an hour after arriving at the house with Deputy Dominique Gilbert.

“She was upset, “ Ream said. “It was clear to me that something had occurred.”

Ream said Dykeman told him that Hall deliberately broke her cordless phone into three pieces.

Under cross examination, Ream told Earley that Dykeman at one point said she had pushed Hall away from her.

This week, we’re looking at unfinished infrastructure—places around the world where grand visions didn’t quite live up to their potential. Previously: the nuclear power plant in Crimea that Chernobyl stopped dead.

THE TOWER WENT 187 FEET up into the sky. The base was framed with wood, but the giant ball on top, 68 feet in diameter, was made of steel. In the ground below, there were said to be tunnels and an “iron root system” that went deep into earth. Nikola Tesla, the inventor and engineer who helped electrify America, believed the tower was the start of a system that could deliver electricity, without wires, to the whole world.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Tesla had become famous for his work on AC power. But he had other big ideas. At his laboratory in Colorado, he had conducted experiments with wireless transmission, trying to send electricity through the ground. His notes on this work are hard to draw conclusions from. But it seems that in at least one instance he had some success. At the very least, he came back east convinced that he could make this idea a reality, on a much larger scale.

After shopping his idea around to the some of the richest men in the world, Tesla secured backing—a solid $150,000—from J.P. Morgan. The investor was most interested in the idea of wireless communication: Guglielmo Marconi, an Italian inventor, had recently been demonstrating his system for wireless telegraphy, sending messages from ships back to land. But Tesla had bigger ideas.

Construction began in 1901 in Long Island on what would become known as Wardenclyffe Tower. Tesla imagined that it would be the beginning of a network of towers, 30 at least, around the world. He believed that these towers would allow him to send electricity through the atmosphere, which anyone with the correct equipment could tap into. Electric power would be ubiquitous. He would make “the whole of this globe…quiver.”

This idea was never going to work: The scientific theories that underlay Tesla’s dream would later be pulled apart. Electricity can be transmitted through the air, but the amount of power needed to send any substantial amount makes this an extremely impractical system. But even to try it, Tesla needed more money, which Morgan was unwilling to provide. There were reports of sparks flying from the tower once or twice, but for the most part it remained a hulking metal orb of mysterious purpose.

After financing dried up, Tesla mortgaged the property and eventually, as his financial troubles grew deeper, he lost it altogether. In 1917, the new owner, trying to recoup some value, had the tower dynamited down and converted into scrap metal. After the first blast, the tower listed to the side and remained tilting towards the ground, a failed experiment, until the workers pulled it down.

Recap: Here’s what happened today
This live page will soon be closing. Here’s a look at what happened today:

The Singapore-flagged Dali cargo ship was setting off from the Port of Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka, when it apparently lost power and struck a pillar of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
The collision caused the bridge to collapse into the Patapsco River, with a last-minute mayday call from the crew giving police just enough time to stop traffic.
Emergency responders rescued two people from the water. Another six were unaccounted for. They are all believed to be construction workers who were working at the bridge at the time of the collapse.
The federal transportation safety agency has said it will launch an investigation into the safety record of the cargo ship as well as the construction and design of the bridge.
US President Joe Biden has said he will seek funds from Congress to rebuild the bridge.
The collapse has caused all operations at the Port of Baltimore, one of the busiest maritime terminals in the US, to be suspended.

As expected:

Supply chain monitor warns of ‘vicious feedback loop’: 26 Mar 2024 - 21:28 (21:28 GMT)

The head of the supply chain management company Flexport has warned that Americans should expect shortages of goods in the wake of the bridge collapse.

“It’s not just the port of Baltimore that’s going to be impacted,” said Ryan Petersen, the company’s CEO.

Petersen explained that the port’s closure in Baltimore, Maryland, was just one factor contributing to shipping delays.

He pointed to ongoing attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea, a waterway that connects Asia with Europe and the US. Petersen explained that those attacks have forced traffic away from the Suez Canal and around the tip of Africa, a longer route.

At the same time, there has been increased congestion in the Panama Canal.

The stresses create a “vicious feedback loop”, he said, adding his team was working to reroute about 800 shipping containers currently making their way to Baltimore’s port.

One patient still hospitalised, one released after rescue
A hospital official has said one person involved in the Baltimore bridge collapse is still being treated while another has been discharged.

Baltimore port: Coal to cars and cruise lines

It is the deepest harbour in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay, closer to the Midwest than other East Coast ports, with five public and 12 private terminals.
It is one of the smallest container ports on the northeastern seaboard, handling 265,000 containers in the fourth quarter of last year.
It is the busiest US port for car shipments, handling more than 750,000 vehicles in 2023.
The port handles imports and exports for major automakers including Nissan, Toyota, General Motors, Volvo Cars, Jaguar Land Rover and Volkswagen, including luxury models for Audi, Lamborghini and Bentley.
It is also the largest US port by volume for handling farm and construction machinery, as well as agricultural products.
Imports of agricultural products totalled 3 million tonnes last year, including 1.2 million of sugar and salt, as well as gypsum, fertilisers and forest products.
Other top imports were paper/paperboard and plywood/veneer/particle board.
