JFK diary calls Hitler 'stuff of legends' 📓

A diary kept by President John F Kennedy as a young man travelling in Europe, revealing his fascination with Adolf Hitler, is up for auction.

Kennedy, then 28, predicted "Hitler will emerge from the hatred that surrounds him now as one of the most significant figures who ever lived".

"He had in him the stuff of which legends are made," he continued.

Kennedy wrote the entry in the summer of 1945 after touring the German dictator's Bavarian mountain retreat.

It is thought by historians to be the only diary ever kept by the 35th US president.

The original copy will be auctioned for the first time on 26 April in Boston by longtime owner Deirdre Henderson, who worked as a research assistant for Kennedy while he was a US senator with White House ambitions.

He wrote that Hitler "had boundless ambition for his country which rendered him a menace to the peace of the world, but he had a mystery about him in the way he lived and in the manner of his death that will live and grow after him".

The 61-page diary was kept by Kennedy around four months after Hitler committed suicide.

At the time, the young American was touring Europe as a newspaper reporter after finishing his military service aboard a ship in the Pacific Ocean.

Nearly two decades later Kennedy would address crowds in West Berlin as US president.

He gave Ms Henderson the diary in order to inform her of his views on foreign policy and national security, she said.

In a description of the auction, she wrote: "When JFK said that Hitler 'had in him the stuff of which legends are made', he was speaking to the mystery surrounding him, not the evil he demonstrated to the world."

"Nowhere in this diary, or in any of his writings, is there any indication of sympathy for Nazi crimes or cause," she continued.

The diary also contains JFK's thoughts about the British election and Winston Churchill, who Ms Henderson called his "idol".

The winning bid is expected to be around $200,000 (£160,000).

Ever since, we’ve had a team on this investigation and substantial resources dedicated to it," an ABC News spokesperson told Fox News. "That work has led to a two-hour documentary and six-part podcast that will air in the new year.”

A set of locks for an Ohio River dam in Kentucky is closed due to a "navigational incident" after 10 barges were released from a tugboat, including one barge carrying 1,400 tons of a toxic alcohol compound, officials said.

The incident occurred at roughly 2 a.m. Tuesday, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Of 11 total barges, 10 became loose from a tugboat; three barges became pinned to the dam, and one additional barge was pinned against a pier, the agency said.

The Army Corp of Engineers said it recovered the barge pinned against the pier by noon Tuesday. It wrote in a statement that the remaining six barges were recovered, adding that the dam's locks will remain closed until the "barges on the dam are stabilized."

The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet said in a tweet that the barge carrying methanol is partially submerged at the McAlpine Locks and Dam in Louisville, Kentucky. The incident prompted Louisville Fire to deploy hazmat monitoring to the dam, according to a Louisville Metro Emergency Services representative.

"The barge companies are marshaling significant resources in response to the incident and will assess the situation and determine next steps," the representative wrote. "In the meantime, Louisville Fire has deployed Haz-Mat monitoring and LMPD and LFD are surveying the area until the private company arrives on scene."

The closest water intake on the Ohio River from the affected dam is in Henderson, Kentucky -- more than 100 miles away from Louisville, according to the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet.

"There is no impact to Louisville Water's water intake or water quality," the utility company wrote in a tweet. "Your water is safe to drink."

No one was injured in the incident.

Accumulations of methanol vapors in confined spaces can be explosive if ignited, according to the National Institutes of Health.

After a couple weeks of controversy, the G4TV host Froskurinn purged all of her tweets, calling it “spring cleaning” and joked that she should have tweeted “oops.”

“Cleaned out socials and got several messages asking if I was hacked. All is well! Just had it for close to forever and decided on a spring cleaning. Poop jokes returning,” Frosk tweeted, a day after posting a link to a manager to connect with “drama YouTubers” for interviews.

Frost then tweeted: “Although I should have just tweeted “whoops”. That would have been much funnier.”

Froskurinn spoke out against the sexism she had experienced because “not as bangable as the previous host” while confessing that she was just reading scripts, like other hosts, and not actually playing some of the games. Frosk had taken more heat for being factually incorrect on some news stories and decided to just doubled down with more insults.

Needless to say, it didn’t take long for the backlash to swell against her.

“Go on twitch…YouTube channel and make you poop jokes,” Drunk 3PO said in his video, encouraging Frosk to move on.

I want G4TV to be a success because I loved the channel so much in my youth and all the petty back and forth doesn’t matter.”

“In joining G4, I was ecstatic to be part of something I grew up watching as a child. But every time G4 is brought up in various channels, without a doubt there will be backlash because I’m not as “bangable” as the previous host. It has somehow been expected that you can talk about how much you jerked off to women as a compliment. It’s not a compliment, it’s dehumanizing, and it’s weird. Morgan Webb and Olivia Munn did not exist to be nice on the eyes for you. That’s just obvious sexism. You don’t need to declare that you hate women to be sexist. Just check out Thorin’s meltdown for some cliff notes.”

She discussed the review and script process: “Xplay is made by a team of people. There are too many games for one person to shoulder the burden,” Froskurrin continued. “So when we use language like we, or I, that’s the reviewer. That’s coming from the mouth and experience of the person reading the review. That’s not to say that any of us don’t contribute to the reviews, we absolutely do, but it’s in varying degrees. It takes a whole team behind us. That’s why we’re X-Play and not Adam play. We have controlled for the variables. Adam will read the script from the same writer I read the other half from, but I’ll be the one flamed. And yes, that happens to Gerard and TBH, but that doesn’t discount the sexism of it when it happens to me.”
