‘Hollywoodism: Jews, Movies, and the American Dream’ is a documentary based on the book ‘An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews Invented Hollywood’, by Neal Gabler. Rife with film clips and archival footage, it provides an overview of the origins of Hollywood – of the six men who started it all, from their arrival to the U.S. at the turn of the 20th century to the mid-’50s.

Originally produced for and broadcast on A&E, it was repackaged on DVD under the title ‘Hollywood: An Empire of Their Own’. I picked it up a few years ago as part of an A&E Biography boxed set featuring many documentaries on various Hollywood legends. ‘Hollywoodism’ had been one of the more informative ones, given that it had a larger scope.

Back in the day, there were five major movie studios, all established in the ’20s: 20th Century Fox, MGM, Paramount, Universal, and Warner Bros. All were brought to life by Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe, who had lived within a 500 mile radius: William Fox, Samuel Goldwyn, Carl Laemmle, Louis B. Mayer, Henry Warner, and Adolph Zukor.

Persecuted back home, they came to America to start over. They all changed their names in a bid to leave their past behind and to be accepted in this new life. They even went so far as to hide their heritage from their children, in order to give them a fresh start. Unfortunately, their options were incredibly limited, so most of them to struggle to find work.

Before they got into the movies, motion pictures were very anti-immigrant or critical of non-white Protestants; the biggest cinematic achievement before their arrival on the scene was ‘Birth of a Nation’. Racism and intolerance prevailed: it is said that Edison so wanted to keep Jews out of the business that he ended up driving them out to California.

…to what would become Hollywood.

These pioneers weren’t easy to fell. Tough as nails, they all brought their respective studios to life within a few years. Carl Laemmle even went so far as to found Universal City, with its own postal service, police station, …etc. He created a small movie-making city that exists to this day (although it has morphed to a certain degree through the years).

Their personal experiences translated in the films that they made. Universal had the persecuted monsters, Warner Bros. had the little guys (the losers, …etc.), Columbia focused on the “common man”, Paramount went with fantasy/escapism, and MGM brought class on a grand scale. On screen, their personal determination to survive translated as the will of the everyman to overcome obstacles.

Eventually, they created an image of America based on their own ideals, including a worship of the mother figure, a distrust of the father figure, and an idyllic life that was wrapped up in personal freedom, a sense of community, and patriotism. It was so popular with the masses that it became something to aspire to – an “American Dream” that persists today.

‘Hollywoodism’ also discusses other significant figures, such as acclaimed songwriter Irving Berlin, who was also a Jew and who expressed similar concerns and values as the movie moguls did...

Dave Zirin: Welcome to Edge of Sports, brought to you by The Real News Network. I’m Dave Zirin, and I have some choice words about New England Patriots owner, Bob Kraft, and a $7 million Super Bowl ad that I am not looking forward to seeing.
Okay, look, New England Patriots’ 82-year-old owner, Robert Kraft, writes seven-digit checks to the right-wing Israeli lobbying machine AIPAC. But his ties to Israel run far deeper than the occasional donation. The multi-billionaire married his late wife, Myra, in Israel in 1963 when Kraft, then just 22, was older than the nation itself. Together, Myra and Robert set up numerous business, athletic, and charitable ties to Israel, a record of which is proudly proclaimed on the Kraft company website.
In particular, the Kraft Group boasts of its Touchdown in Israel program, where NFL players are given free, highly organized vacations to see the Holy Land and come back to spread the word about the only democracy in the Middle East. Kraft also attends fundraisers for the Israeli defense forces who currently, in an open view of the world, are committing war crimes in Gaza.
Now, as Israel wages war against the civilians of Gaza, Kraft is again flexing his financial and political muscles in order to defend the indefensible. His Foundation of Combat Antisemitism, or FCAS, will be spending an estimated $7 million to buy a Super Bowl ad titled “Stop Jewish Hate” that will be seen by well over 100 million people.
Under Kraft’s direction, the ad’s goal is to create a propaganda campaign to counter the reports and images from Gaza that young people are consuming on social media. Without a sense of irony or the horrors happening on the ground, Kraft says he is giving $100 million of his own money to the Foundation Against Antisemitism because hate leads to violence — Just not violence against Palestinians, apparently.
Let’s be clear. What Kraft is doing politically and what he’ll be using the Super Bowl as a platform to do is dangerous. He appears to think that any criticism of Israel is inherently antisemitic. For Kraft, it is Jews like myself, rabbis, and Holocaust survivors calling for a ceasefire and a free Palestine that are part of the problem. And Kraft seems to think that opposition to Israel, the IDF, and the AIPAC agenda is antisemitism.
There is a Red Sea of distance, as I’ve written, between antisemitism and anti-Zionism. Antisemitism is the pernicious hatred of a beautiful religion and culture that has been with us for over 5,000 years. Anti-Zionism means opposing a once negligible 125-year-old colonial project in the Middle East.
Zionism was a minor strain in Jewish life until the Holocaust, where, in a state of unspeakable trauma, Zionism rose triumphant after World War II with a new state built on the backs and land of the Palestinian people, a new outpost of what columnist Bari Weiss, with shameless racism, calls the West, albeit located in the Middle East. Now, for Kraft and Bari Weiss, building a highly militarized nuclear state built on stolen land is the only true hedge against another Holocaust.

The fire on Saturday afternoon occurred at a storehouse in the southern town of Viviez, in Aveyron, where 900 tons of lithium batteries were waiting to be recycled.
Authorities ordered residents to stay indoors and keep their windows closed as thick smoke billowed over the town. No injuries or deaths were reported and the cause of the fire has yet to be established.
Lithium batteries, found in electric scooters and vacuum cleaners, are known to spontaneously combust if they overheat or become damaged. Their dangers have raised concerns in countries where e-bikes have been promoted as a climate-friendly mode of transportation.
Questions raised
Jean-Louis Denoit, the mayor of Viviez, called Saturday’s fire “shocking” and told French news channel BFMTV: “Behind all this, there is indeed reason to ask questions about the function of electric vehicles and lithium batteries.”
It took 70 firefighters to put the fire under control, after which air quality tests were conducted and the lockdown order lifted.
France has moved to promote cycling since the pandemic, with e-bikes becoming hugely popular in cities like Paris. However irresponsible behaviour and a rising number of accidents has led to criticism around their use, and how to store their batteries safely.
In the UK, a proposal to build one of Europe’s largest battery storage facilities near the village of Granborough, in Buckinghamshire, was met with fierce opposition by locals who have expressed environmental and safety concerns.
The plan, by the energy company Statera, calls for a 500 MW battery energy storage system that would span 26 acres of land.
Responding to the plans, the Claydon Solar Action Group wrote on social media: “Unacceptable risks of fire, explosion, air and water pollution, a major accident waiting to happen just 500 metres away from residential properties.”

⁣The picture below is the “small cell” outside my hotel bedroom window in San Francisco on my last California trip, likely built in the name of 5G. Now, California Governor Newsom has a decision to make about two bills, AB 537and SB 556. If he signs them into law, these bills would strip local authority and make it easier for companies to build “short” 5G “small” cell towers on neighborhood streets.
5G is the fifth generation wireless aiming to tie together the latest and greatest technology at super-fast speeds.
In order to make it work, companies want to erect millions of new short cell towers called “small cells” near homes and schools on poles called “small cells.” According to the FCC, hundreds of thousands of new wireless transmitters will be attached to street lights, utility poles and buildings.
Published peer-reviewed research documents how 5G and the densification of network radiation emissions from small cells will increase environmental exposure levels of radio frequency non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation throughout the neighborhood.
Yet when people protest wireless network antennas being outside their bedroom windows, they are met with safety assurances from telecommunications company and government officials.
If 5G and wireless radiation are so safe then why do insurance authorities classify 5G as high risk?
“Off the leash — 5G mobile networks” is the title of a Chapter in the 2019 Swiss Re Report on New Emerging Risks for the Insurance industry, which rates
5G as a “high impact” risk.
“As the biological effects of EMF in general and 5G in particular are still being debated, potential claims for health impairments may come with a long latency. An uptick in liability claims could be a potential long-term consequence.”

If 5G and wireless radiation are so safe then why do insurance companies refuse to cover damages from non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation?
For example, the Portland Oregon Public School Genesis Insurance Company states,
“Exclusions: This insurance does not apply to: Bodily injury, personal injury, advertising injury, or property damage arising directly or indirectly out of, resulting from, caused or contributed to by electromagnetic radiation, provided that such loss, cost or expense results from or is contributed to by the hazardous properties of electromagnetic radiation.”

If 5G and wireless radiation are so safe then why do the wireless companies themselves define non-ionizing radiation as a “pollutant?”
Both AT&T Mobile Insurance(pg. 4)and Verizon Total Mobile Protection (page 10)state that coverage is excluded for pollutants, which are defined as “Any solid, liquid, gaseous, or thermal irritant or contaminant including smoke, vapor, soot, fumes, acid, alkalis, chemicals, artificially produced electric fields, magnetic field, electromagnetic field, sound waves, microwaves, and all artificially produced ionizing or non-ionizing radiation and waste.”
And finally, if 5G and wireless radiation are so safe then why do wireless companies themselves warn their shareholders of potential risks but not warn customers who buy their products and not warn people living with wireless network antennas directly outside their bedroom windows?
Crown Castle warns shareholders in their 2020 10-K tax filing that:
“If radio frequency emissions from wireless handsets or equipment on our communications infrastructure are demonstrated to cause negative health effects, potential future claims could adversely affect our operations, costs or revenues.
“The potential connection between radio frequency emissions and certain negative health effects, including some forms of cancer, has been the subject of substantial study by the scientific community in recent years. We cannot guarantee that claims relating to radio frequency emissions will not arise in the future or that the results of such studies will not be adverse to us.”
“If a connection between radio frequency emissions and possible negative health effects were established, our operations, costs, or revenues may be materially and adversely affected. We currently do not maintain any significant insurance with respect to these matters.”
Verizon Wireless warns their shareholders in their 10-K form to the US Securities and Exchange Commission that:
“We are subject to a substantial amount of litigation, which could require us to pay significant damages or settlements."

Animals hopped up on cocaine is not a new concept; the February film “Cocaine Bear” loosely chronicled the bizarre true story of when a 175-pound black bear ingested cocaine that was thrown out of a drug smuggling plane in 1985.

However, with Discovery Channel’s Shark Week right around the corner, scientists have revealed the possible discovery of sharks in the Atlantic Ocean that have ingested cocaine.

Experts say that sharks may be gobbling up bales of drugs that were dumped into the water off the coast by smugglers.

Biologists studying the phenomenon reported seeing a hammerhead shark swimming into discarded packages and biting into them.

After ingesting the drugs, the sharks were observed to be behaving erratically, causing what scientists call “crazy brain.”

A documentary focusing on sharks on cocaine is set to premiere during Shark Week, which begins on Sunday.
