The director of the Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, has belatedly resigned after the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. But more accountability is required. Cheatle’s boss, the secretary of homeland security, Alejandro Mayorkas, must also resign.

Cheatle was grilled by lawmakers on Monday, with Republicans and Democrats calling for her resignation. Cheatle, however, stonewalled and punted on most of the questions. Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA) was among the lawmakers calling for her resignation. “The evidence coming to light has shown unacceptable operational failures,” Boyle said in a statement. “I have no confidence in the leadership of the United States Secret Service if Director Cheatle chooses to remain in her position.”

The bipartisan onslaught was not one that Cheatle could withstand.

A full investigation of the attempted assassination is underway, but it seems clear that inexcusable mistakes were made. Credible reports suggest that the Secret Service was undermanned at the event, that Trump’s campaign had requested additional staffing but was denied, that Thomas Matthew Crooks used both a rangefinder and a drone to scout out the rally grounds in advance, and that he used a ladder to climb up the roof of a building that itself was occupied by law enforcement.

The attempted assassination of a presidential candidate and former president is, to put it mildly, a big deal. It’s the sort of seismic event that would likely lead to parliamentary governments falling in other Western countries. And it demands nothing less than the resignation of a Cabinet-level official. Cheatle’s resignation will not suffice. Her superior, Mayorkas, should resign as well.

As head of the Department of Homeland Security, Mayorkas oversees the Secret Service, among other agencies. DHS was created in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and is the federal executive agency tasked with public security, its duties including anti-terrorism, border security, cyber security, and disaster prevention and management, among other responsibilities. It is unacceptable, post-July 13, for Mayorkas to remain in such an office. Significant measures to restore the public trust must be taken.

The last president to be shot was Ronald Reagan, who was wounded by John Hinckley in 1981. And the last candidate for the presidency to be shot was George Wallace, who was shot and paralyzed in 1972. The tragedy of July 13 is historic. A Cabinet official must answer for it.

The editor inchief of the conservative magazine National Review, Rich Lowry, appears to have used a racial slur during a conversation on The Megyn Kelly Show, in which the two pundits were discussing the rampant falsehoods about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio. Lowry dropped the slur in place of the word "migrants," quickly correcting himself after.

Kelly did not react to Lowry's apparent slip-up, nor did she address it when he finished speaking. Instead, the two defended Republican vice-presidential candidate JD Vance, who spread the claims despite admitting they are false, praising his "alternative facts."

Vance doubled down on debunked claims about Haitian immigrants abducting pets to eat them and falsely linked the migrant community to rising rates of HIV and tuberculosis in an interview last week with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins. He later admitted the rumors were false but defended spreading them in a Sunday interview with Dana Bash on CNN.

“If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, Dana, then that’s what I’m going to do because you guys are completely letting Kamala Harris coast," Vance said.

The conspiracy theory that Haitian immigrants in Springfield were stealing and eating pets went viral after former President Donald Trump spread the false claims during last Tuesday's presidential debate. Trump insisted that immigrants were “eating the dogs and cats” of residents, despite local officials consistently debunking the rumors and noting that no evidence supported the claims.

CLAIM: A CNN report from Sept. 11, 2001, is evidence that no airplane debris was found at the site of the Pentagon attack.

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. The CNN report was deceptively recut to make it seem as though a correspondent at the scene, Jamie McIntyre, said debris from an airplane had not been found. In the real footage, McIntyre says that debris had not been found anywhere except the Pentagon, and describes in detail the parts of the plane that he did see. There is also photographic evidence of airplane debris found at the crash site.

THE FACTS: On the 21st anniversary of 9/11 on Sunday, an old, false claim that no airplane debris was found at the Pentagon after the building was attacked reemerged in an Instagram post.

The post includes a short clip from CNN’s Sept. 11, 2001, coverage. Text above the clip reads, “THIS FOOTAGE AIRED ONCE AFTER 9/11 AND WAS NEVER ON TV AGAIN,” while the post’s caption claims that “every article or photo will show you ZERO debris at the alleged crash site at the pentagon.”

In the clip, then-CNN anchor Judy Woodruff says: “Jamie, you got very close to where that plane went down,” and McIntyre, at the time the network’s military affairs correspondent, responds: “That’s right Judy, a short while ago I walked right up next to the building as firefighters were still trying to put out the blaze that — the fire, by the way, is still burning in some parts of the Pentagon — and I took a look at the huge, gaping hole that’s in the side.”

He appears to continue by saying: “But from my close-up inspection, there’s no evidence of a plane having crashed anywhere near the Pentagon. The only site is the actual site of the building that’s crashed in. And as I said, the only pieces left that you can see are small enough that you could pick up in your hand. There are no large tail sections, wing sections, a fuselage, nothing like that anywhere around.”

“I made an examination of the privates of Mary Phagan. I found no spermatozoa. On the walls of the vagina there was evidences of violence of some kind. The epithelium was pulled loose, completely detached in places, blood vessels were dilated immediately beneath the surface and a great deal of hemorrhage in the surrounding tissues. The dilation of the blood vessels indicated to me that the injury had been made in the vagina some little time before death.”


When he was done, he tied a cord around her neck & strangled her to death.

“The fact that the child was strangled to death was indicated by the lividity, the blueness of the parts, the congestion of the tongue and mouth and the blueness of the hands and fingernails.”

Reasoning:

Justice Marshall held that although Marbury was entitled to his commission, the United States Supreme Court could not hear the case because it lacked original jurisdiction.

Marbury was lawfully appointed as Justice of the Peace through the president’s (Adams) signing of Marbury’s commission and Senate confirmation.

The problem is the provision directly conflicts with the Constitution, specifically Article III. Article III serves as a limitation on the types of cases the Supreme Court has original jurisdiction over. Cases not within the Supreme Court’s original jurisdiction may fall under the Court’s appellate jurisdiction. In short, Section 13 of The Act is unconstitutional since it attempts to expand the original jurisdiction of the Supreme Court.

The suspect accused of shooting and wounding two staff members at East High School Wednesday morning has been found dead in Park County, 9NEWS has learned.

Wednesday afternoon, law enforcement found a red Volvo associated with 17-year-old Austin Lyle on County Road 68, also known as Wellington Lake Road, outside of Bailey, the Park County Sheriff's Office said. Denver police said just before 6 p.m. that efforts to locate the suspect were ongoing.

Park County Sheriff Tom McGraw said Wednesday night that around 8:15 p.m., a person's body was found in the woods about two-tenths of a mile from the car. McGraw said the person's body has not been identified.

A law enforcement source told 9NEWS the body was that of Lyle, and that he died of an apparent suicide.

Park County had issued an emergency alert for the town of Bailey and the surrounding area due to the investigation. Residents were asked to shelter in place and call 911 if they see anything unusual.

McGraw said that shelter-in-place alert has been lifted.
