Okay, look, New England Patriots’ 82-year-old owner, Robert Kraft, writes seven-digit checks to the right-wing Israeli lobbying machine AIPAC. But his ties to Israel run far deeper than the occasional donation. The multi-billionaire married his late wife, Myra, in Israel in 1963 when Kraft, then just 22, was older than the nation itself. Together, Myra and Robert set up numerous business, athletic, and charitable ties to Israel, a record of which is proudly proclaimed on the Kraft company website.
In particular, the Kraft Group boasts of its Touchdown in Israel program, where NFL players are given free, highly organized vacations to see the Holy Land and come back to spread the word about the only democracy in the Middle East. Kraft also attends fundraisers for the Israeli defense forces who currently, in an open view of the world, are committing war crimes in Gaza.
Now, as Israel wages war against the civilians of Gaza, Kraft is again flexing his financial and political muscles in order to defend the indefensible. His Foundation of Combat Antisemitism, or FCAS, will be spending an estimated $7 million to buy a Super Bowl ad titled “Stop Jewish Hate” that will be seen by well over 100 million people.

Let’s be clear. What Kraft is doing politically and what he’ll be using the Super Bowl as a platform to do is dangerous. He appears to think that any criticism of Israel is inherently antisemitic. For Kraft, it is Jews like myself, rabbis, and Holocaust survivors calling for a ceasefire and a free Palestine that are part of the problem. And Kraft seems to think that opposition to Israel, the IDF, and the AIPAC agenda is antisemitism.
There is a Red Sea of distance, as I’ve written, between antisemitism and anti-Zionism. Antisemitism is the pernicious hatred of a beautiful religion and culture that has been with us for over 5,000 years. Anti-Zionism means opposing a once negligible 125-year-old colonial project in the Middle East.
Zionism was a minor strain in Jewish life until the Holocaust, where, in a state of unspeakable trauma, Zionism rose triumphant after World War II with a new state built on the backs and land of the Palestinian people, a new outpost of what columnist Bari Weiss, with shameless racism, calls the West, albeit located in the Middle East. At the start of 1929, the end of the Roaring Twenties, the economy in the United States was sitting pretty with further progress on every horizon. Wall Street admittedly saw a minor stock market crash in the spring, but things quickly balanced back out and people were happily ignoring any further signs of troubles to come. By the fall, however, the market seemed to have reached its peak and started the downhill journey. With mass numbers of the American population having increasingly been investing in the stock market, some people were finally starting to pay a bit more attention to the falling and volatile prices. Stocks were being sold at a faster pace now, and October brought about Black Thursday on the 24th - the day that the market crashed by 11% and Americans frantically hoped to sell what they had while they still could.

Reason being in September I got my flu shot again and I've been having problems ever since like chest pains and shortness of breath which I never had before. The last 3 years before this flu shot I didn't have any problems like I'm having now. I never got any of the covid shots because I asked God do I take these shots Lord and he told me no. I to this day will not take any covid shots at all they will have to kill me in order to inject that into me. I know what they're evil agenda is and I asked the woman pharmacist at Walgreens when I went to get my flu shot this last time is this a real flu shot or is this an evil shot that has covid or something else in it that's going to harm me. She said no I'm sure it's the right shot and will not cause you any harm but how do they know? Even doctors and doctors offices don't know what they are getting in their offices to inject in people they think that it's good and is going to help someone and they are misled also. I'm only 63 years old fixing to be 64 in September and I love my Lord God and have my faith in him and I know that he wouldn't do anything to hurt any of us because of the love he has for us. The saying "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is" seems to be one that publishers could do well to familiarise themselves with after yet another fake memoir scandal. The latest heart-rending true story of triumph over adversity to be exposed as fiction is the Holocaust survivor's tale Angel at the Fence, hailed by Oprah Winfrey as "the single greatest love story" she had ever heard.

The account by Herman Rosenblat told the story of how, as a teenage boy, he was apparently kept alive in a Nazi concentration camp by a nine-year-old girl who threw him food over the camp fence every day for seven months. Miraculously she was never spotted. Even more miraculously, the pair were reunited on a blind date years later when they had both resettled in America.

These remarkable coincidences failed to set off any alarm bells at Berkley Books, which was due to publish the book next month, or in the US media until the New Republic magazine asked Holocaust historians about the veracity of the story.

The experts noted, among other things, that it would have been impossible for the couple to meet at a fence because of the Schlieben camp's layout.

Rosenblat then admitted he had invented the tale and was forced to return the money he had received for the book.

The book's withdrawal follows similar false memoir controversies. In March, Misha Defonseca, the author of Misha: a Memoir of the Holocaust Years, admitted she had not escaped from a concentration camp aged six, trekked halfway across occupied Europe and been raised by wolves. The 71-year-old author confessed that she had fabricated the story, which was turned into a film, and was not even Jewish.

You might have thought Oprah would have been more careful, having had her fingers burned over the drug addiction memoir A Million Little Pieces, by the American author James Frey. Winfrey turned on Frey – having lauded his book on her show and seen it soar to the top of bestseller lists in the US – after it emerged he had fabricated parts of his story.

His claim to have read War and Peace while serving a jail term appeared doubtful after it was revealed that he had been detained for just a few hours. Readers who bought his book under the impression that it might be a true story were in 2006 offered a refund, estimated to have cost the publisher, Random House, about $2.35m (then £1.25m).

Similar doubts were raised over his next book, My Friend Leonard, in which Frey spends a jail sentence reading War and Peace, Don Quixote, Leaves of Grass and East of Eden to an illiterate murderer with whom he spends the afternoons – works which Slate magazine worked out at being 3,513 pages, or 115 pages of reading an afternoon.

These tall tales have joined the ranks of other great publishing hoaxes such as the Hitler Diaries. But will public humiliation deter further works of fiction masquerading as fact? Or with such a big public appetite for overwrought tales, and the financial rewards so attractive, are the hoaxers here to stay?
