A renowned zoologist has pleaded guilty to dozens of sickening charges including animal cruelty, bestiality and possession of child exploitation material.

Darwin crocodile expert Adam Robert Corden Britton, 52, was unmasked as the serial animal abuser in the Northern Territory Supreme Court on Monday.

Not those Sulzbergers, you may have thought on May 20 when perusing a two-page map of Antarctica in The Times. There, just to the left of the enormous Ross Ice Shelf, was “Sulzberger Bay.” What were the Sulzbergers doing down near the South Pole? Wasn’t their family estate in Westchester County? Could this be a misprint? Or an in-joke?

It was neither. Sulzberger Bay does indeed take its name from Arthur Hays Sulzberger, the publisher of The New York Times from 1935 to 1961, who not only supported two Antarctic expeditions by Rear Adm. Richard E. Byrd (Commander Byrd at the time), but counted the admiral among his friends. In the 1920s, before taking over as publisher from his father-in-law, Mr. Sulzberger helped make The Times an advocate of aviation and exploration.

Admiral Byrd was so indebted to the Ochs-Sulzberger family and The Times that he went on a naming spree in December 1929 — summer in Antarctica — as he charted newly found features in Marie Byrd Land. (That would be Mrs. Byrd.) Besides Sulzberger Bay, he also designated:

• Adolph S. Ochs Glacier, since shortened to Ochs Glacier, at the foot of Block Bay. Mr. Ochs was the publisher of The Times at the time of the expedition.
• Mount Iphigene, a 4,200-foot peak west of Ochs Glacier, named for Mr. Ochs’s daughter, who was married to Mr. Sulzberger.
• Marujupu Peak, a 3,000-foot-high nunatak emerging from the Ochs Glacier. Marujupu (ma-ROO-joo-poo) is an acronym using the first two letters of the names of each of Iphigene and Arthur Sulzberger’s children, in birth order: Marian, Ruth, Judith and Punch, as Arthur Ochs Sulzberger was called.
• Birchall Peaks, a small group west of Mount Iphigene. Frederick T. Birchall was the managing editor of The Times when Byrd was exploring Antarctica. Besides helping finance Admiral Byrd’s first expedition, the Times dispatched its own correspondent, Russell Owen, to cover the trek. He spent a year on the assignment and was immortalized at Owen Peak, originally Mount Russell Owen.

A stirring memento of the Byrd-Sulzberger friendship is a 1921 Morgan silver dollar. It is framed together with a short narrative written by Arthur Hays Sulzberger, describing how the coin was passed back and forth between the men, beginning with Admiral Byrd’s Arctic expedition of 1926 and trans-Atlantic flight of 1927.

“Before leaving on his first South Pole adventure, Byrd asked me for the dollar,” Mr. Sulzberger wrote. “I put it in this plain blue envelope with a simple notation. It was never removed from the envelope and was taken across the South Pole in it.”

“Again on his second South Polar trip [1934] the Admiral asked me for the dollar. It accompanied him on all of his flights and was with him at the advance base. In turn it was duly brought back to me. “

“Finally on this third trip to Antarctica [1939-40] — this time for the United States Government — Admiral Byrd once again claimed his dollar and, as usual, returned it.”

“A dollar can go very far in the proper hands.”

Very far — as Admiral Byrd told Mr. Sulzberger by letter after returning the coin in October 1940. During the third expedition, the admiral’s ship had become icebound in Sulzberger Bay.

“There did not seem to be any chance of getting out,” Admiral Byrd wrote, “but with this luck piece and a seaplane, we managed, by zigzagging and pounding the ice, to break our way through to open water. Perhaps without this luck piece we would still be in your inhospitable Bay.

“You must take good care of this silver piece,” the admiral continued. “If you should lose it I would be sunk, for I would not dare to go on a hazardous undertaking without it. Devotedly, Dick.”

Social media users recently circulated video footage they claimed shows an Israeli helicopter killing Israelis at an Oct. 7 concert in Israel.

Stew Peters, a far-right radio host and the filmmaker behind the anti-COVID-19 vaccine films "Died Suddenly" and "Watch the Water," shared the 14-second video clip on X, formerly Twitter.

"VIDEO PROVES and ISRAEL ADMITS it slaughtered its own people on Oct. 7th," Peters wrote Nov. 9. "This attack was NOT made by goat herders on paragliders. Footage from Israeli helicopter shows the IDF killing many people at October 7 concert in Israel. IDF helicopters fired on civilians fleeing the PsyTrance Music Festival."

Other social media users shared Peters’ post, and it was flagged as part of Meta’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram.) We also found this video clip misrepresented on TikTok.

Peters misleads about what the clip shows. The Israel Defense Forces shared this clip Oct. 9 on X, saying it showed a series of Israeli attacks on Hamas fighters. Hamas fighters attacked concertgoers in Israel on Oct. 7, and more than 200 people were killed, according to Zaka, Israel’s rescue service.

Asked about his post, Peters referred PolitiFact to a series of news reports — some in Hebrew — that he said document "Israelis killing their own." The information he sent did not include or appear to mention the video footage he shared on X.

Peters’ X post linked to an Oct. 30 article from a pro-Palestine media research organization that in turn linked to another Oct. 27 article from The Grayzone, a news organization historically on the political left. The Grayzone story included an embedded X post with the Israeli forces’ video footage, with a caption that said the footage showed Israeli forces "attacking Hamas fighters."

We found no evidence to support Peters’ claim that the video clip showed Israeli forces killing people at an Oct. 7 concert in Israel. A group that works to geolocate video footage analyzed the Israel Defense Forces’ video and said it was not filmed at the music festival site.

Where did the video footage originate?

Hamas fighters attacked multiple locations in Israel on Oct. 7, including the Tribe of Nova music festival, where at least 260 people were killed, according to Zaka, Israel’s rescue service. Hamas’ attack at the music festival was documented by victims and journalists and confirmed by global heads of state, including the leaders of France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States.

On Oct. 9, the Israel Defense Forces first posted a video showing this overhead footage on X that, starting at the 2:06 timestamp, shows air strikes followed by clouds of smoke and dust rising; at one point, people are visible before the strike. According to Google’s built-in translation, the Hebrew-language caption read: "Throughout the last day, Air Force planes have been carrying out extensive attacks along the length and breadth of the Gaza Strip, wreaking havoc on Hamas terrorists. In just the last three hours, about 130 targets were attacked using dozens of planes. The focus of the attack: Beit Hanon, Sajaya, Al Furkan and Rimal >>"

Around the world, girls face complex physical, cultural, and financial barriers in accessing education. As a girl grows older the fight to get an education becomes even harder. Her family must be willing to pay school fees. She may have a long, unsafe walk to school. She may be forced to marry. And she often lacks the support she needs to learn.

In celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8 of this year, First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama gave a speech to recognize the progress made on the one year anniversary of Let Girls Learn, a U.S. Government initiative to ensure adolescent girls get the education they deserve. August 2015—Student attrition. Extreme poverty. Early pregnancy. Prolonged and obstructed labor leading to fistula. Maternal and child mortality. Marital instability. These are just some of the harmful consequences of child marriage, a practice that undercuts efforts to encourage sustainable development.


Like many developing countries, the practice is widespread in Ethiopia, even though it is unlawful and punishable. This is particularly so in the Amhara Region where the prevalence is among the highest in the world as reflected in a 2010 Population Council study showing that almost 50 percent of girls were married before the age of 15 and some married as early as age 7.


Living in one of the most prevalent early marriage zones of the Amhara Region, Fiker Tenaw could very easily have become part of that 50 percent. Last year, the 13-year-old discovered that her parents were secretly arranging a marriage for her to someone she had never met. She was shocked and upset, but not defenseless.


Fortunately for Fiker, before finding out about her parents’ secret plan, she had learned about the negative impact of early marriage through a USAID activity at her school. The activity works in areas of the Amhara Region where child marriage is the most prevalent to raise awareness and increase communication and coordination between community members, law enforcement officials, religious leaders, and educators to stop this harmful practice.


As a major component of the activity, USAID, in partnership with NGO Justice for All-Prison Fellowship Ethiopia, worked with educators to establish girls’ clubs in targeted schools and provide information to students. It was at the girls’ club at her school where Fiker learned about the harmful consequences of early marriage and her human rights. The students also perform dramas for classmates and parents to help change perceptions about the deeply ingrained practice.


Some students—when they learn that their parents have arranged a marriage for them—want help but are afraid to ask. To address this, one idea introduced by the girls’ clubs is to have “secret boxes” at each school. Any student or teacher who learns about a planned early marriage can place the name of the affected person in the box, and the school will work with parents and local officials to intervene.

Armed with what she learned, Fiker fought back. She reported her soon-to-be marriage to the girls’ club at her school and also went to the police. With their support, Fiker refused to accept the early marriage. Instead, she chose to prioritize her education, saying, “I want to benefit my family and myself, and contribute to the development of our country.”


With USAID’s support, girls like Fiker feel strong enough to fight for their rights. “If my parents again try to force an early marriage upon me, I will go to my teachers and the police and refuse the marriage,” exclaimed Fiker.


Since the USAID activity began in December 2013, nearly 1,500 child marriage arrangements were cancelled in the five woredas, or districts, where the activity is implemented, while the courts have also begun to judicially revoke some child marriages and punish perpetrators.


“When girls are forced into child marriages, they are robbed of having a childhood, receiving an education and having their bodies mature in a healthy manner,” said USAID/Ethiopia Mission Director Dennis Weller. “Through our efforts, we are raising awareness that it is for the long-term good of both the individuals and their communities to stop the practice of child marriages.”


Fiker’s future looks bright, having just completed sixth grade as the top student in her class. “I have learned about the consequences of child marriage at an early age. I prefer an education before a husband.”


The USAID activity, Enhancing the Status of Human Rights Protection and Systems of Good Governance in Ethiopia, runs until 2018.
