‘The Wizard of Oz’ is a Real Political Allegory

Dorothy and Toto, the Tin Woodman and the
Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion and the Wicked
Witch of the West, are all magical figures out of
one of America's most loved movies. But "The
Wizard of Oz" was, and is, much more than a
children's fantasy. As conceived and written by
Lyman Frank Baum in 1900, "The Wonderful
Wizard of Oz" was a political allegory of
turn-of-the-century America. Written in the
waning days of the Populist movement of the
late 1800s, it was the story of the sad collapse
of Populism and the issues upon which the
movement was based.

The Populist movement grew as a reaction to the changes brought about by industrialization. Centered
primarily in Midwestern farming communities, the Populist Party challenged banks, railroads and the Eastern
elites, which were seen as keeping the farmer down through low prices for agriculture, high freight charges
and high farm debt, and through upholding the gold standard for currency, which kept interest rates up and
money tight. When urban workers joined the alliance with farmers, the Populists became a viable force in
American politics, aligning themselves with the Democratic Party.

The Populist Party was headed by one of America's greatest orators, William Jennings Bryan; it proposed
government ownership of railroads and other industries and advocated moving off the gold standard to
silver-backed currency. The Populist cause grew during the severe economic depression of 1893 when farm
prices plummeted and unemployment soared.

In the Congressional elections of 1894, the Populists drew almost 40% of the vote. The presidential election
of 1896 proved to be the high-water mark for the party. Their standard-bearer Bryan (famed for the speech
in which he accused the banks of crucifying the farmer on a "cross of gold") lost to Republican candidate
William McKinley by only 95 electoral votes. But the Populists rapidly faded from the political scene as
prosperity returned under McKinley and as politicians like Teddy Roosevelt adopted some of their positions.
Baum, who edited a weekly paper in South Dakota before moving to Chicago in 1896, lamented the decline
of the alliance between the farmer and urban worker and the subsequent decline of the party. Although
"Oz," was written and published (with great success) as a children's fantasy, Baum clearly had Populism's
misfortune in mind.

The allegory begins with the title. Oz is the abbreviation for ounce, the standard measure used for gold.
Dorothy represents Everyman; the Tin Woodman is the industrial worker, the Scarecrow is the farmer, the
Cowardly Lion is William Jennings Bryan, the Wizard is the President, the munchkins are the "little people"
and the Yellow Brick Road is the gold standard. Toto probably represents a dog.
In the story, Dorothy is swept away from Kansas in a tornado and arrives in a mysterious land inhabited by
"little people." Her landing kills the wicked witch of the East (bankers and capitalists), who "kept the
munchkin people in bondage."

In the movie, Dorothy begins her journey through the Land of Oz wearing ruby slippers, but in the original
story Dorothy's magical slippers are silver. Along the way on the yellow brick (gold) road, she meets a Tin
Woodman who is "rusted solid" (a reference to the industrial factories shut down during the depression of
1893). The Tin Woodman's real problem, however, is that he doesn't have a heart (the result of the
dehumanizing work in the factory that turned men into machines).

Farther down the road Dorothy meets the Scarecrow, who is without a brain (the farmer, Baum suggests,
doesn't have enough brains to recognize what his political interests are). Next Dorothy meets the Cowardly
Lion, an animal in need of courage (Bryan, with a loud roar but little else). Together they go off to Emerald
City (Washington) in search of what the wonderful Wizard of Oz (the President) might give them.

When they finally get to Emerald City and meet the Wizard, he, like all good politicians, appears to be
whatever people wish to see in him. He also plays on their fears. To Dorothy, he is a disembodied head; to
the Cowardly Lion he is a predatory beast; to the Woodman, a glowing ball of fire. But soon the Wizard is
revealed to be a fraud--only a little old man "with a wrinkled face" who admits that he's been "making
believe." "I am just a common man," he says. But he is a common man who can rule only by deceiving the
people into thinking that he is more than he really is.

"You're a humbug," shouts the Scarecrow, and this is the core of Baum's message...


⁣Those forces that keep the
farmer and worker down are manipulated by frauds who rule by deception and trickery; the President is
powerful only as long as he is able to manipulate images and fool the people.
Finally, to save her friends, Dorothy “melts” the wicked Witch of the West (just as evil as the East), and the
Wizard flies off in a hot air balloon to a new life. The scarecrow (farmer) is left in charge of Oz, and the Tin
Woodman is left to rule the East. This Populist dream of the farmer and worker gaining political power was
never to come true, and Baum seems to recognize this by sending the Cowardly Lion back to the forest, a
recognition of Bryan’s retreat from national politics.
Dorothy is able to return home with the aid of her magical silver shoes, but upon walking in Kansas, she
realizes they’ve fallen off, representing the demise of the silver coinage issue in American politics.
As the last hurrah of the Populist movement in America, The Wizard of Oz is a political parable rich in
historical significance. The beauty of the film, and one of the main reasons for its longevity, is that its
reach exceeds its grasp. It speaks to us beyond the now-dated meaning of its political message and taps
universal elements within the human character that are endearing and long lasting.
This “children’s story,” as with so many other stories based on a vision of reality animated by the events of
their time, also speaks to larger philosophical issues. In this sense, just as Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver Travels
rings true today, so too, does The Wizard of Oz have contemporary meaning. And so, next time you sit
down and join Dorothy, Toto, and friends on the adventure, remember: You are taking a populist journey in
search of a new political order that replaces the power of industrial capitalists with a farmer-workers
alliance. Have a pleasant trip.

‘Hollywoodism: Jews, Movies, and the American Dream’ is a documentary based on the book ‘An Empire of Their Own: How the Jews Invented Hollywood’, by Neal Gabler. Rife with film clips and archival footage, it provides an overview of the origins of Hollywood – of the six men who started it all, from their arrival to the U.S. at the turn of the 20th century to the mid-’50s.

Originally produced for and broadcast on A&E, it was repackaged on DVD under the title ‘Hollywood: An Empire of Their Own’. I picked it up a few years ago as part of an A&E Biography boxed set featuring many documentaries on various Hollywood legends. ‘Hollywoodism’ had been one of the more informative ones, given that it had a larger scope.

Back in the day, there were five major movie studios, all established in the ’20s: 20th Century Fox, MGM, Paramount, Universal, and Warner Bros. All were brought to life by Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe, who had lived within a 500 mile radius: William Fox, Samuel Goldwyn, Carl Laemmle, Louis B. Mayer, Henry Warner, and Adolph Zukor.

Persecuted back home, they came to America to start over. They all changed their names in a bid to leave their past behind and to be accepted in this new life. They even went so far as to hide their heritage from their children, in order to give them a fresh start. Unfortunately, their options were incredibly limited, so most of them to struggle to find work.

Before they got into the movies, motion pictures were very anti-immigrant or critical of non-white Protestants; the biggest cinematic achievement before their arrival on the scene was ‘Birth of a Nation’. Racism and intolerance prevailed: it is said that Edison so wanted to keep Jews out of the business that he ended up driving them out to California.

…to what would become Hollywood.

These pioneers weren’t easy to fell. Tough as nails, they all brought their respective studios to life within a few years. Carl Laemmle even went so far as to found Universal City, with its own postal service, police station, …etc. He created a small movie-making city that exists to this day (although it has morphed to a certain degree through the years).

Their personal experiences translated in the films that they made. Universal had the persecuted monsters, Warner Bros. had the little guys (the losers, …etc.), Columbia focused on the “common man”, Paramount went with fantasy/escapism, and MGM brought class on a grand scale. On screen, their personal determination to survive translated as the will of the everyman to overcome obstacles.

Eventually, they created an image of America based on their own ideals, including a worship of the mother figure, a distrust of the father figure, and an idyllic life that was wrapped up in personal freedom, a sense of community, and patriotism. It was so popular with the masses that it became something to aspire to – an “American Dream” that persists today.

‘Hollywoodism’ also discusses other significant figures, such as acclaimed songwriter Irving Berlin, who was also a Jew and who expressed similar concerns and values as the movie moguls did...

The overall media consensus has been to blame the intended murder victims for recklessly provoking the terrorists. Such provocation, we are told, is unacceptable and irresponsible behavior given the risk of retaliation by offended radical Muslims.

By this bizarre logic, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Selma marchers should be condemned for instigating the melee on the Edmund Pettus bridge. Same for the three murdered civil-rights workers in Mississippi, the victims of Bull Connor’s police dogs, and anyone else who has taken a stand that might irritate violence-prone people.

For the mainstream media and chattering classes, dumping on peaceful, law-abiding Christians is good, safe sport. But pointing the finger of blame at murderous Muslim fanatics? Well, let’s not get carried away. Rather than draw the ire of radical Muslims by firmly and unequivocally condemning the attack, the infotainment industry has concentrated its attention on the provocative nature of the draw-Mohammed contest. After all, like a drunken, immodestly dressed rape victim, weren’t the draw-Mohammed contestants just asking for it?

Better to question the wisdom of cartoonists exercising their rights than to acknowledge and vigorously confront and expose the elephant in the room, i.e., that there is a disturbingly large number of radical Muslims in this country who oppose our Constitution and who believe that murder is an appropriate sanction for those who offend Islam. That, of course, is the real story behind the attack in Texas. But to grapple with that might inflame those radicals and pose a risk to careers and corporate profits, or result in expulsion from the preening ranks of the politically correct.

Trope: Details of the Holocaust Have Been Exaggerated
Some so-called Holocaust “revisionists” claim they don’t deny the Holocaust happened, but simply dispute some of the findings of mainstream historians. They use this rhetorical strategy to try to avoid the moral disgust that many people feel towards Holocaust deniers, but upon examining many of their claims it is clear that their goal is indeed to deny the essential fact of the Holocaust: that approximately six million Jews were killed by the viciously antisemitic Nazi regime, including many in gas chambers.
Pseudo-academic Holocaust deniers and white supremacist, antisemitic trolls alike dispute the fact that six million Jews were killed, often claiming that the actual death toll is much lower, and many deaths were due to diseases like typhus rather than large-scale systemic murder. They also dismiss or minimize the role of the gas chambers, arguing that it was scientifically and technically impossible for the Nazis to have killed that many Jews, and the gas chambers were not used for extermination.
Holocaust deniers often highlight false or misleading statistics about the Jewish population before and after the war to support their claims. White supremacist trolls also attempt to minimize the scale of the Holocaust; their frequent use of the nonsensical phrase “six gorillion,” a clearly made-up number, is meant to indicate they believe the six million deaths are fake as well.
Trope: Witness Testimony is Fabricated or Inaccurate
Holocaust deniers often dispute the authenticity of Holocaust survivors’ testimonies, dismissing them as unreliable and inaccurate. They also dispute eyewitness accounts left behind by those who were murdered, claiming Jewish survivors and victims manipulate public opinion about Nazi Germany and make non-Jews feel guilty. Examples include claims that Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night has no historical value or that Anne Frank’s diary is a forgery.
Trope: Jews Invented the Holocaust for Financial and Political Gain
Holocaust deniers argue that the “Holocaust hoax” is designed to elicit guilt from Western countries and populations, which Jews then use for financial and political gain, including by pressuring Germany for reparations to Holocaust survivors.
Deniers imagine a vast, shadowy Jewish conspiracy that controls entire institutions and industries in order to disseminate the Holocaust narrative. They allege that white, Western Christian nations have been swindled and extorted by the Jews through the perpetuation of so-called “Holocaust mythology,” including educational curricula and Holocaust museums and memorials.
These claims draw on longstanding antisemitic tropes about alleged Jewish control and greed and the conspiratorial notion that Jews are engaged in a nefarious plot to take over the world.
Trope: The Holocaust is a Zionist Political Tool
For decades, anti-Zionism has been an important element of Holocaust denial. Many deniers, drawing on tropes about Jews being greedy and deceitful, claim that Jews invented the Holocaust “story” in order to manipulate global powers and gain support for the creation of the state of Israel in 1948. They also claim that Zionists have continued to exaggerate or fabricate the scale of the Holocaust to increase political and financial support for Israel during periods of conflict with other countries, to distract from Israel’s actions against Palestinians and to silence Israel’s critics.
Hardcore Holocaust denial organizations and ideologues also push the narrative that the collective stifling of Holocaust denial is an example of supposed global Zionist control and the power of the “Israel lobby.” These arguments lean toward broader conspiracy theories about alleged attempts by “globalists,” “elites,” Jews and Zionists to control discourse across the world.
⁣Trope: Jews are Responsible for Their Own Persecution
Some Holocaust deniers choose to blame the victims while also denying the most heinous crimes of the Holocaust. This trope alleges that, to the extent that Jews were targeted, it was due to direct Jewish collaboration with Hitler’s regime, and that those Jews who did die during this period were causalities of a Zionist-led and financed effort to work with Nazis directly in order to establish the State of Israel and persuade Jews to emigrate there. These deniers see no contradiction between denying the existence of the gas chambers and the Final Solution, and blaming Zionists for whatever Jewish persecution they acknowledge actually occurred.
The promotion of this trope distorts historical facts by downplaying the responsibility of the Nazis in perpetrating the Holocaust and reframing specific events both prior to and during World War II to fit their narrative. It also serves to portray Zionists historically and today as callous, deceitful and evil people who will take any actions necessary to achieve their goals.

Congressman Chuck Fleischmann is a conservative Republican representing the 3rd District of Tennessee. The District is comprised of 10 counties: Anderson, Bradley, Campbell, Hamilton, McMinn, Monroe, Morgan, Polk, Roane, and Scott.
