RALEIGH, N.C. (CN) — North Carolina Representative Cecil Brockman resigned from his position as state lawmaker Friday, several weeks after he was charged with two counts of statutory rape of a 15-year-old and two counts of indecent liberties with a child.

The 41-year-old Democrat has faced bipartisan calls for his resignation since his chargeswere made public earlier in October. His legislative assistant confirmed his resignation to Courthouse News Friday. His term in office had been scheduled to end on Jan. 1, 2027.

House Democratic Leader Robert Reives said in a statement that he is glad Brockman voluntarily resigned.

“The allegations against him are serious and made it impossible for him to adequately represent his constituents,” Reives said. “I look forward to the Guilford County Democrats appointing his successor."

Speaker of the House Destin Hall formally announced Friday the creation of a bipartisan House committee to explore Brockman’s expulsion.

He told reporters earlier in the month that the committee would be intended to give Brockman an opportunity for due process and to be heard. The process was anticipated to take several months as lawmakers gather evidence and investigate the charges raised against him, before making a recommendation to the House regarding reprimand or expulsion.

Hall removed Brockman from all the House committees he was serving on Friday, pending the conclusion of the House’s investigation. Brockman, who was in his sixth term in the House, was previously a vice chairman for the K-12 education committee. He was first elected to the House in 2014.

The state House last executed the investigation process in 2009, when Representative Thomas Wright was removed for ethical misconduct over claims he mishandled campaign funds and charitable contributions. Prior to that, it had been almost 130 years since the General Assembly removed a member from office.

“Rep. Brockman’s decision to resign is the right thing to do for his constituents and for the North Carolina House of Representatives,” Hall said in a statement Friday. “His departure spares the House from a difficult expulsion process and brings closure to this troubling chapter.”

Brockman, who is currently being held at the High Point Detention Center, had his bond set at $1.05 million. His attorney has asked for his bond to be lowered to $100,000, which the state has opposed. He has appeared once virtually in Guilford District Court after his first appearance was delayed due to an undisclosed medical emergency.

Brockman was arrested after calling 911 and telling a dispatcher that he was looking for the 15-year-old, whom he identified as his friend. Prosecutors said the teen met him on a dating app and lived with him for a time near Atlanta, Georgia, before moving to an apartment in North Carolina earlier this year. Authorities have said they recovered 14 videos on the teen’s phone that include “certain acts” in which Brockman is identifiable.

Prosecutors say that Brockman committed a “lewd and lascivious act” on a 15-year-old on Aug. 15. They also claim that Brockman has made several attempts to contact the minor, including trying to locate them while they were in the hospital. Brockman has also tried to “use his status to gain information,” a magistrate said in an initial bond determination.

Brockman, who served for over a decade, occasionally voted with Republicans and was absent during important votes, spurring pushback from fellow Democrats.

He spoke out against his party in 2024, claiminghe was being “scapegoated” after being absent during a notable vote, warning that the same behavior pushed another Democrat, Representative Tricia Cotham, to switch parties in 2023. He narrowly won against his primary challenger in March 2024.

Despite his resignation, Brockman’s office will continue serving his constituents until his replacement is appointed, legislative assistant Drew Gibson said. Brockman is next scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

UFC champion Israel Adesanya has called for the “pedos” connected to Jeffery Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s sex trafficking ring to be publicly named.

Adesanya spoke out before his big victory on Saturday to demand justice for Epstein’s powerful friends who were involved in the child abuse.

Epstein, a convicted sex offender, was found dead in his jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial for his sex trafficking crimes.

His accomplice, longtime companion, and ex-girlfriend, Maxwell, was sentenced last month to 20 years in prison for helping recruit and groom underage girls for Epstein and his “client list” to sexually abuse.

Adesanya responded to Maxwell’s sentencing by demanding to know why Epstein’s client list hasn’t been made public.

“Ghislaine Maxwell just got put away for 20 years,” Adesanya said.

“So, she was supplying kids for all these f***ing pedos, right? Where’s the list?”

“So, the list of, you know, politicians, and actresses and actors, or whatever, that get talked about, does that just get swept under the rug?” he asked.

“Do they not get any time for actually f***ing those kids?

“You know what I mean?”

“I don’t know, like that’s just weird, like how all that just doesn’t compute with me,” Adesanya added.

Epstein reportedly had ties to former President Bill Clinton, allegedly even visiting the White House on multiple occasions.

Britain’s Prince Andrew, too, reportedly had ties to the convicted pedophile and has been accused of raping Epsetin’s teenage victim, Virginia Roberts Giuffre.

In February, Adesanya made headlines when he fiercely defended popular podcast host Joe Rogan, who was targeted by the “woke” mob and smeared as racist and a promoter of “disinformation.”

The fighter took on a question that was not directed toward him during a pre-fight conference, calling Rogan “one of the nicest, coolest, humble motherf***ers” in the industry.

A reporter asked UFC President Dana White about the “controversy” surrounding Rogan and the controversial language the podcaster has used on his show.

As White started to walk away from the podium, Adesanya said he wanted to take on the question.

“Hold up,” Adesanya said.

“I’m black. I can take this one.”

“Look, there’s a lot of c***s in this game,” he told the reporter.

“I’ve been in this fight game since 2008.

The fire on Saturday afternoon occurred at a storehouse in the southern town of Viviez, in Aveyron, where 900 tons of lithium batteries were waiting to be recycled.
Authorities ordered residents to stay indoors and keep their windows closed as thick smoke billowed over the town. No injuries or deaths were reported and the cause of the fire has yet to be established.
Lithium batteries, found in electric scooters and vacuum cleaners, are known to spontaneously combust if they overheat or become damaged. Their dangers have raised concerns in countries where e-bikes have been promoted as a climate-friendly mode of transportation.
Questions raised
Jean-Louis Denoit, the mayor of Viviez, called Saturday’s fire “shocking” and told French news channel BFMTV: “Behind all this, there is indeed reason to ask questions about the function of electric vehicles and lithium batteries.”
It took 70 firefighters to put the fire under control, after which air quality tests were conducted and the lockdown order lifted.
France has moved to promote cycling since the pandemic, with e-bikes becoming hugely popular in cities like Paris. However irresponsible behaviour and a rising number of accidents has led to criticism around their use, and how to store their batteries safely.
In the UK, a proposal to build one of Europe’s largest battery storage facilities near the village of Granborough, in Buckinghamshire, was met with fierce opposition by locals who have expressed environmental and safety concerns.
The plan, by the energy company Statera, calls for a 500 MW battery energy storage system that would span 26 acres of land.
Responding to the plans, the Claydon Solar Action Group wrote on social media: “Unacceptable risks of fire, explosion, air and water pollution, a major accident waiting to happen just 500 metres away from residential properties.”
