Reparatory justice must tackle the grave human rights violations deeply entrenched in the legacy of colonialism and enslavement, the General Assembly heard on Thursday on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, marked annually on 21 March.

Experts and UN leaders exchanged views about the best ways forward, centred on this year’s theme, A Decade of Recognition, Justice, and Development: Implementation of the International Decade for People of African Descent.

While the decade ends in 2024, much work remains to be done, General Assembly President Dennis Francis told the world body.

To galvanize action-based efforts, he announced a meeting focusing on the issue of reparatory justice, to be held on Monday on the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade , marked on 25 March.


People of African descent face many prejudices and injustices through legacies of slavery and colonialism, from police brutality to inequalities, he said, stressing that the world must take action to fully protect their human rights.

“Racism and racial discrimination are a flagrant violation of human rights,” he said. “It is morally wrong, has no place in our world and must therefore be roundly repudiated.”

UN chief slams ‘devastating’ legacies

The results of the legacy of enslavement and colonialism are “devastating”, said UN Secretary-General António Guterres in a statement delivered by UN Chef de Cabinet Courtenay Rattray.

Pointing to opportunities stolen, dignity denied, rights violated, lives taken and lives destroyed, he said “racism is an evil infecting countries and societies around the world.”

While racism is “rife”, it impacts communities differently.

Action must dismantle inequalities

“People of African descent face a unique history of systemic and institutionalized racism, and profound challenges today,” the UN chief said. “We must respond to that reality, learning from and building on the tireless advocacy of people of African descent.”

Action must change that, he said, from governments advancing policies and other measures to eliminate racism against people of African descent to tech firms urgently addressing racial bias in artificial intelligence.

Violent history

Chef de Cabinet Mr. Rattray, speaking on his own behalf, reminded the world body that the International Day is observed annually on the day the police in Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid “pass laws” in 1960.

Since then, the apartheid system in South Africa has been dismantled, and racist laws and practices have been abolished in many countries.

Today, a global framework for fighting racism is guided by the International Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which is now nearing universal ratification.

⁣‘Commemoration is not enough’

However, Mr. Rattray said, racism is entrenched in social structures, policies and the realities of millions today, violating people’s dignity and rights while fuelling silent discrimination in health, housing, education and daily life.

“It is high time we shook ourselves free,” he said, calling for action.

“Commemoration is not enough. Eliminating discrimination requires action.”

That includes countries and businesses delivering reparatory justice, he said.

Also addressing the General Assembly were Ilze Brand Kehris, Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights and June Soomer, Chair-designate of the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent.

Just a couple of months after notorious paedophile Jeffrey Epstein's court document was revealed, again, a number of celebrities find themselves embroiled in the legal proceedings surrounding music producer Rodney Jones' $30 million lawsuit against hip-hop mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.
Jones launched his lawsuit on February 26, levelling serious accusations against Combs, including allegations of sexual misconduct, grooming, and even participation in sex-trafficking activities. However, attorneys representing Combs vehemently denied these claims, stating, “We have overwhelming, indisputable proof that his claims are complete lies.”
The civil lawsuit, filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, focuses on the list of Mr. Gordon Jones' allegations. Another section of the Complaint movie accusations that Combs' collaborators in an industry as well as this, for they focused on his unlawful actions that allowed them to operate his effective links.
Who are the celebrities named in the Diddy's court filing
Nipsey Hustle aka Stevie J a prominent in music production and television, is also some others, including an unidentified rapper from Philadelphia with whom Nicki Minaj is said to have dated.
The legal documents provide a reference to an R&B artist, who scooped a Grammy as the best singer, whose name they have blurred. The artist was arrested by the police after an assault to a Bajan multimillionaire.

As per his legal representation, their music stellar icons were considered to profit with their connection to Combs with respect to their tags, contacts, and high reputation. The filing also shows that by the adjoiny, Combs' associates were afforded a golden ring among themselves since they could be attended by various celebrities, such as sportsmen, politicians, artists, singers, and even international icons and the British Royals.
Once again, the proceedings take place against the violent background of the FBI raiding what is publicly known as the LA and Florida properties believed to belong to Combs. Local news outlets disclosed that HSI -- the Homeland Security Investigations -- agents carried out the search warrants of all properties owned by Combs in the exclusive neighbourhood of West Los Angeles and in Miami. One was executed on a Monday afternoon.
These raids are said to be linked to sex trafficking allegations made by different plaintiffs in recent months. In response to the raids, attorney Tyrone Blackburn, representing Rodney "Lil Rod" Jones, commented, “About damn time. Sometimes justice delayed is not justice denied, so long as justice ultimately arrives.”
Combs, who has been facing multiple legal battles in recent months, was also sued by his ex-girlfriend, R&B singer Cassie, in November. Cassie alleged years of sexual abuse, accusing Combs of forcing her to engage in sexual acts with male prostitutes while he filmed. Remarkably, the lawsuit was settled just one day after it was filed, adding yet another layer of complexity to the ongoing legal saga surrounding the hip-hop icon.

YouTube and Google‘s global head of music Lyor Cohen has been confirmed to receive City of Hope’s highest honor, the Spirit of Life Award, at its fall gala.

The veteran music executive will receive the shine on Oct. 18 at West Hollywood’s Pacific Design Center. The Spirit of Life Award is “presented to an esteemed community of industry leaders around the world who have made a significant commitment to improving the lives of others through the advancement of research and clinical innovation and the delivery of personalized, compassionate care,” per City of Hope.

Once he takes a spin at the podium, Lyor will join a list of previous recipients that includes Shelli and Irving Azoff, Edgar Bronfman Jr., Coran Capshaw, Eddy Cue, Clive Davis, Lucian Grainge, Allen Grubman, Quincy Jones, Rob Light, Monte and Avery Lipman, Doug Morris, Mo Ostin, Bob Pittman, Jon Platt and Sylvia Rhone, among others.

“If you have the opportunity to give a gift back to the industry you love, with an organization like City of Hope, whose doctors and scientists’ passion for helping others is so extraordinary, it’s a no-brainer,” Cohen said. “My career has been shaped by a contrarian point of view. Open to making mistakes, making big bets, unpopular decisions and being comfortable with change; that is how culture shifts and how breakthroughs happen. To me, these are many of the same qualities that make City of Hope’s mission to transform the future of cancer care across all communities so impactful.”

Cohen began his career as a road manager for Run DMC and the Beastie Boys, before taking on a variety of leadership roles across the music business, from management to the highest-level C-suites. His resume features top posts as Def Jam, Island Def Jam Music Group, Warner Music Group, 300 Entertainment and now, YouTube. Cohen sits on the board of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the National Independent Venue Association, and is an acting director for SCAN-Harbor.

“In addition to Lyor powering American hip hop as a cultural and musical phenomenon, I have known him to have a big heart and passion when it comes to helping others. This is certainly a prime example of that as he now takes an incredible step in helping City of Hope fight cancer, diabetes and HIV,” offered Evan Lamberg, president of Universal Music Publishing Group North America and president of City of Hope’s music, film and entertainment industry board.

News of Cohen’s honor kicks off a year long fundraising initiative for City of Hope that fundraisers like the Taste of Hope wine dinner and auction (May 17 in New York), Music Trivia Bowl (July 20 in Los Angeles) and the Songs of Hope event.

The post, which was viewed by over 17,400 people at the time of writing, comprises of a video taken at a supermarket by an unidentified individual. The individual uses the camera to zoom in on the ingredients of a packet of Kinder Schoko-Bons chocolates.

The information on the packet of chocolates is written in German, and the individual points out that ‘Schellack’ is one of the ingredients. The video cuts to a web search of ‘Shellack’, with results showing images of an insect.

Together with animated overlay of crawling insects over the video, the caption reads, ‘There’s bugs in your chocolate’.

A Creeping Realisation
We translated ‘Schellack’ into English and found that it referred to shellac, a refined substance made from the secretion of the Kerria lacca insect. It is usually found in the forests of India and Southeast Asia, has been harvested for millenia, and has multiple uses.

Shellac helps to add shine to an object’s exterior and limit contact to moisture and oxygen. It is often used in cosmetics such as nail polish and hair styling products, in woodworking, and as a coating for food, including for candy, fresh fruit and medicine pills. Shellac is often listed as an ingredient under the name ‘confectioner’s glaze’, and can help to prolong the life of food items.

While this means that shiny food items often contain the insect-derived shellac, this is not a universal rule. The animal rights organisation PETA, which opposes the use of shellac in food because ‘nearly 100,000 bugs die to produce about 1 pound of shellac flakes’, note that some candy with shiny exteriors like Gobstoppers, Tic Tac and Skittles do not use animal ingredients.

It is also untrue that the use of shellac in confectionery means adding entire insects to candies. While a large number of insects die during the harvesting process, these are screened out during manufacturing. As a result, insects are more likely to end up in a candy bar if it has been sitting on a store shelf for a long time, rather than during the manufacturing process.

The Unvarnished Truth
Looking up Kinder products in particular, we found that shellac was listed as an ingredient for Schoko-Bons on Kinder’s UK website, as well as for Choco-Bons, the Australian version.

Kinder’s Singapore website did not indicate the product availability of Schoko-Bons or Choco-Bons here. Other popular locally available Kinder products such as Kinder Bueno and Kinder Joy did not include shellac in their ingredients.

Nevertheless, we found that shellac is a food additive that is permitted in Singapore and regulated by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA).

While this may come as a surprise to some, it must be noted that shellac has been used in confectionery for decades without any indication of health risks to humans. Moreover, human consumption of insect-derived products is already relatively commonplace through food items such as honey and some variants of food dye.

As such, though the post is mistaken to claim that insects are an ingredient in confectionery themselves, it is true that chocolates and other candies can contain insect-derived products.
