After World War 2 this barren landscape risked becoming another battleground as tensions soared between the US and the Soviet Union, but these ambitions were crushed thanks to the Antarctic Treaty System. The global pact, signed 60 years ago, is dedicated to preserving and protecting the continent for scientific research and provides a safeguard against nuclear proliferation.

And YouTube channel ‘Seeker’ revealed in their ‘Focal Point’ documentary how they uncovered “never-before-seen footage” from the early scientific missions carried out by a British glaciologist.

The narrator said: “As a young scientist, David Drewry participated in hundreds of groundbreaking flights across Antarctica.

“While conducting research, David filmed his experience, and we asked him to digitise a roll of film, which hasn’t seen the light of day, until now.

“Thanks to friendly competition and collaboration, techniques like radio glaciology, which uses radar to map the ice, became vetted scientific methods.”

Dr Drewry explained during the series how he and his colleague Stan Evans developed a technique of overlapping radar scans with photos.

He said: “What Stan did was to get a camera with a piece of 35mm film that would slowly pass over the oscilloscope, the film integrated the signal.
“And with the film continuously moving across it, you built up a profile.”

These techniques are still being used today and Stanford radio-glaciologist Dustin Schroeder embarked on a huge project to digitalise all of the old data.

He said: “There were thousands of reels that we then combined together.

On Sunday, The New York Times published a rare US admission that US intelligence has not only been instrumental in Ukraine’s wartime decision-making but has established and financed high-tech command-and-control spy centers and was doing so long prior to the Feb. 24 Russian invasion of two years ago.
According to Zero Hedge, The New York Times admitted that the program was established a decade ago and spans three different American presidents. The Times says the CIA program to modernize Ukraine’s intelligence services has “transformed” the former Soviet state and its capabilities into “Washington’s most important intelligence partners against the Kremlin today.”

Alexandria, Va. -- A local rabbi caught going to a house for what he thought would be a sexual encounter with a 13-year-old boy has been sentenced to more than six years in prison, News4's Shannon Bream reported.
The boy turned out to be a 26-year-old man working for Perverted Justice, a group that exposes adults who use the Internet to arrange sex with children.
Rabbi David Kaye, 56, of Potomac, Md., was shown on "Dateline NBC" walking into a home in Herndon, Va.
In September, a federal judge convicted Kaye on one count of coercion and enticement and one count of travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct. On the coercion and enticement count, Kaye was sentenced to 60 months. On the travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual contact count he was sentenced to 78 months. The sentences will run concurrently, and Kaye, who has been in prison since May, was given credit for time served.
The sentence also includes 10 years of supervised release after his prison sentence. He also will register as a sex offender.
The government had presented four grounds for enhancement of the sentencing, Bream reported. The judge rejected three of them but acknowledged obstructing of justice, finding that Kaye had perjured himself during the trial.
Prior to his sentencing, Kaye tearfully read a statement asking the media to leave him alone, Bream reported. He said the events had been painful to him and his family and he said he was eager to embark on therapy.
"This incident was my cry out for help to fight my personal demons," he said.
Kaye requested sentencing to Butner FCI so he can get into their sex offender treatment program. The judge granted the request but noted that the Butner program is full and it will likely be years before Kaye can get into it.
Kaye was facing up to 60 years in prison.

One of the reasons I was attracted to the Christian Reformed Church is its intellectual robustness. That is arguably the Reformed tradition’s strength. It is also, I think, its greatest danger because it can lead to the sin of intellectual pride.
I confess that I struggle with intellectual pride myself. Ever since my youth, my intellect was the one strength that made me “successful.” Even after I became a Christian, I overly relied on my intellect to grow in faith and serve the church, devouring theological and spiritual books. My faith was more cerebral than emotional. Moments of “feeling right” occurred so rarely in contrast to “thinking right” in my spiritual journey that it showed an unhealthy imbalance.
I elevated my intellectual ability to comprehend God’s truths as the main way (or the only way?) for me to relate to God. I used theological knowledge as a spiritual yardstick. I looked down on as spiritually immature those who knew less than me. I was a proud young man who thought he knew a lot about God, about Scriptures and theology. I was often critical of and argumentative with those who differed from me theologically. I still have to suppress this judgmental urge today. Intellectual pride is the spiritual thorn in my flesh. Unfortunately, I think it is also prevalent among many Christian Reformed folks—clergy and lay people alike.
Scripture teaches that “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble” (James 4:6; 1 Pet. 5:5b; Prov. 3:34). God had to humble me through a period of dark depression that nearly caused me to fail university. By God’s grace, I received help for my depression and was able to resume my studies. Now, older and (I hope) wiser, I know how much I still do not know. I see now with greater clarity the human mind’s limits, our confirmation and negativity biases, and how foolish I was—as anyone is—to overly depend on intellect.
We should be grateful to God for the robust intellectual gifts of the Reformed tradition. But we cannot be blind to the very real temptation of loving the gifts more than the Giver. Have we loved our Reformed theology and confessions more than the God they point to? Are we so intellectually arrogant that we fail to learn from “non-Reformed” Christians? Have we so idolized our Reformed theological system to the point that we cannot even question it?
I believe God has a role for the Reformed tradition and the CRC in his divine mission—thus there is all the more urgency for us to repent and be proper vessels for God’s glory. I hope God does not have to resort to drastic measures to humble us as a denomination before we can repent of our intellectual pride. But I trust that God, who began a good work in us, “will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Phil. 1:6). God, and God’s mission, will not fail.

The House on Wednesday passed a bill with broad bipartisan support that would force TikTok’s Chinese owner to sell the hugely popular video app or be banned in the United States. The move escalates a showdown between Beijing and Washington over the control of technologies that could affect national security, free speech and the social media industry.
Republican leaders fast-tracked the bill through the House with limited debate, and it passed on a lopsided vote of 352-65, reflecting widespread backing for legislation that would take direct aim at China in an election year.
The action came despite TikTok’s efforts to mobilize its 170 million U.S. users against the measure, and amid the Biden administration’s push to persuade lawmakers that Chinese ownership of the platform poses grave national security risks to the United States.
The result was a bipartisan coalition behind the measure that included Republicans, who defied former President Donald J. Trump in supporting it, and Democrats, who also fell in line behind a bill that President Biden has said he would sign.
The bill faces a difficult road to passage in the Senate, where Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the majority leader, has been noncommittal about bringing it to the floor for a vote and where some lawmakers have vowed to fight it.
TikTok has been under threat since 2020, with lawmakers increasingly arguing that Beijing’s relationship with TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, raises national security risks. The bill is aimed at getting ByteDance to sell TikTok to non-Chinese owners within six months. The president would sign off on the sale if it resolved national security concerns. If that sale did not happen, the app would be banned.
Representative Mike Gallagher, the Wisconsin Republican who is among the lawmakers leading the bill, said on the floor before the vote that it “forces TikTok to break up with the Chinese Communist Party.”
“This is a common-sense measure to protect our national security,” he said.
If the bill were to become law, it would likely deepen a cold war between the United States and China over the control of important technologies.
On Wednesday, before the House vote, Beijing condemned the push by U.S. lawmakers and rejected that TikTok was a danger to the United States. At a daily press briefing, Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for China’s foreign ministry, accused Washington of “resorting to hegemonic moves when one could not succeed in fair competition.”
Mr. Biden has announced limitations on how American financial firms can invest in Chinese companies and restricted the sale of Americans’ sensitive data like location and health information to data brokers that could sell it to China. Platforms like Facebook and YouTube are blocked in China, and Beijing said last year that it would oppose a sale of TikTok.
TikTok has said that it has gone to great lengths to protect U.S. user data and provide third-party oversight of the platform and that no government can influence the company’s recommendation model. It has also said there is no proof that Beijing has used TikTok to obtain U.S. user data or to influence Americans’ views, two of the claims lawmakers have made.
TikTok prompted users to call their representatives last week to protest the bill in an unusually aggressive move for a technology company, saying: “This legislation has a predetermined outcome: a total ban of TikTok in the United States.”
TikTok has spent more than $1 billion on an extensive plan known as Project Texas that aims to handle sensitive U.S. user data separately from the rest of the company’s operations. That plan has been under review by a panel known as the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, or CFIUS, for several years.
Two of the lawmakers behind the bill, Mr. Gallagher and Raja Krishnamoorthi, an Illinois Democrat, said last week that lawmakers were acting because CFIUS “hasn’t solved the problem.”

A team of Australian researchers at Monash University in Melbourne have found that Ivermectin — an FDA-approved anti-parasitic drug that has been used to effectively fight viruses including HIV, Influenza, and Zika — was able to stop the SARS-CoV-2 virus from growing in cell cultures.
While promising, the drug has yet to be shown to have the same effect inside the human body, because the Australian research was conducted "in vitro," meaning it was in a Petri dish at a lab. The researchers are still trying to nail down funding for pre-clinical testing and clinical trials, after which they'd have to start the long approval process for the trials themselves.
The results, though, are promising. In just 48 hours, the scientists say, all genetic material of the virus was eradicated.
"We found that even a single dose could essentially remove all viral RNA by 48 hours and that even at 24 hours there was a really significant reduction in it," Kylie Wagstaff, lead researcher and co-author of the study published today in Antiviral Research, said in a statement.
"Ivermectin is very widely used and seen as a safe drug," Wagstaff said. "We need to figure out now whether the dosage you can use it at in humans will be effective — that's the next step."
"As the virologist who was part of the team who were first to isolate and share SARS-COV2 outside of China in January 2020, I am excited about the prospect of Ivermectin being used as a potential drug against COVID-19," Leon Caly, senior medical scientist at the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL) at the Doherty Institute, said.
A vaccine for COVID-19 is likely still at least a year out, despite research teams across the world fast tracking work on potential vaccines. But that doesn't mean we're doomed.
"In times when we're having a global pandemic and there isn't an approved treatment, if we had a compound that was already available around the world then that might help people sooner," Wagstaff said in the statement. "Realistically it's going to be a while before a vaccine is broadly available."

Reparatory justice must tackle the grave human rights violations deeply entrenched in the legacy of colonialism and enslavement, the General Assembly heard on Thursday on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, marked annually on 21 March.

Experts and UN leaders exchanged views about the best ways forward, centred on this year’s theme, A Decade of Recognition, Justice, and Development: Implementation of the International Decade for People of African Descent.

While the decade ends in 2024, much work remains to be done, General Assembly President Dennis Francis told the world body.

To galvanize action-based efforts, he announced a meeting focusing on the issue of reparatory justice, to be held on Monday on the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade , marked on 25 March.


People of African descent face many prejudices and injustices through legacies of slavery and colonialism, from police brutality to inequalities, he said, stressing that the world must take action to fully protect their human rights.

“Racism and racial discrimination are a flagrant violation of human rights,” he said. “It is morally wrong, has no place in our world and must therefore be roundly repudiated.”

UN chief slams ‘devastating’ legacies

The results of the legacy of enslavement and colonialism are “devastating”, said UN Secretary-General António Guterres in a statement delivered by UN Chef de Cabinet Courtenay Rattray.

Pointing to opportunities stolen, dignity denied, rights violated, lives taken and lives destroyed, he said “racism is an evil infecting countries and societies around the world.”

While racism is “rife”, it impacts communities differently.

Action must dismantle inequalities

“People of African descent face a unique history of systemic and institutionalized racism, and profound challenges today,” the UN chief said. “We must respond to that reality, learning from and building on the tireless advocacy of people of African descent.”

Action must change that, he said, from governments advancing policies and other measures to eliminate racism against people of African descent to tech firms urgently addressing racial bias in artificial intelligence.

Violent history

Chef de Cabinet Mr. Rattray, speaking on his own behalf, reminded the world body that the International Day is observed annually on the day the police in Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid “pass laws” in 1960.

Since then, the apartheid system in South Africa has been dismantled, and racist laws and practices have been abolished in many countries.

Today, a global framework for fighting racism is guided by the International Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which is now nearing universal ratification.

⁣‘Commemoration is not enough’

However, Mr. Rattray said, racism is entrenched in social structures, policies and the realities of millions today, violating people’s dignity and rights while fuelling silent discrimination in health, housing, education and daily life.

“It is high time we shook ourselves free,” he said, calling for action.

“Commemoration is not enough. Eliminating discrimination requires action.”

That includes countries and businesses delivering reparatory justice, he said.

Also addressing the General Assembly were Ilze Brand Kehris, Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights and June Soomer, Chair-designate of the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent.

Just a couple of months after notorious paedophile Jeffrey Epstein's court document was revealed, again, a number of celebrities find themselves embroiled in the legal proceedings surrounding music producer Rodney Jones' $30 million lawsuit against hip-hop mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.
Jones launched his lawsuit on February 26, levelling serious accusations against Combs, including allegations of sexual misconduct, grooming, and even participation in sex-trafficking activities. However, attorneys representing Combs vehemently denied these claims, stating, “We have overwhelming, indisputable proof that his claims are complete lies.”
The civil lawsuit, filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, focuses on the list of Mr. Gordon Jones' allegations. Another section of the Complaint movie accusations that Combs' collaborators in an industry as well as this, for they focused on his unlawful actions that allowed them to operate his effective links.

Once again, the proceedings take place against the violent background of the FBI raiding what is publicly known as the LA and Florida properties believed to belong to Combs. Local news outlets disclosed that HSI -- the Homeland Security Investigations -- agents carried out the search warrants of all properties owned by Combs in the exclusive neighbourhood of West Los Angeles and in Miami. One was executed on a Monday afternoon.
These raids are said to be linked to sex trafficking allegations made by different plaintiffs in recent months. In response to the raids, attorney Tyrone Blackburn, representing Rodney "Lil Rod" Jones, commented, “About damn time. Sometimes justice delayed is not justice denied, so long as justice ultimately arrives.”
Combs, who has been facing multiple legal battles in recent months, was also sued by his ex-girlfriend, R&B singer Cassie, in November. Cassie alleged years of sexual abuse, accusing Combs of forcing her to engage in sexual acts with male prostitutes while he filmed. The Singapore-flagged Dali cargo ship was setting off from the Port of Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka, when it apparently lost power and struck a pillar of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
The collision caused the bridge to collapse into the Patapsco River, with a last-minute mayday call from the crew giving police just enough time to stop traffic.
Emergency responders rescued two people from the water. Another six were unaccounted for. They are all believed to be construction workers who were working at the bridge at the time of the collapse.
The federal transportation safety agency has said it will launch an investigation into the safety record of the cargo ship as well as the construction and design of the bridge.
US President Joe Biden has said he will seek funds from Congress to rebuild the bridge.
The collapse has caused all operations at the Port of Baltimore, one of the busiest maritime terminals in the US, to be suspended.

The head of the supply chain management company Flexport has warned that Americans should expect shortages of goods in the wake of the bridge collapse.

“It’s not just the port of Baltimore that’s going to be impacted,” said Ryan Petersen, the company’s CEO.

Petersen explained that the port’s closure in Baltimore, Maryland, was just one factor contributing to shipping delays.

He pointed to ongoing attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea, a waterway that connects Asia with Europe and the US. Petersen explained that those attacks have forced traffic away from the Suez Canal and around the tip of Africa, a longer route.

At the same time, there has been increased congestion in the Panama Canal.

The stresses create a “vicious feedback loop”, he said, adding his team was working to reroute about 800 shipping containers currently making their way to Baltimore’s port.

It is the busiest US port for car shipments, handling more than 750,000 vehicles in 2023.
