As the lead organizer of this month’s Rock and Roll Drag Queen Story Hour, Reed has courageously stood his ground in the face of determined and coordinated harassment by fascists and their allies.

It started almost as soon as Reed went public with his plans to organize a charity fundraiser for the LGBTQ community. “I walked out my door the next day, and a little grey hatchback roared by my house with the horn blaring.” A man shouted homophobic slurs at Aaron from the truck.

Over the course of the next several weeks, Reed faced a terrifying campaign of intimidation focused on himself and his family. He receives near constant threats on social media and has been followed in the grocery store by people he doesn’t know. He is called “groomer” or “pedophile” by his neighbors.

Initial verbal harassment escalated quickly after local politicians became invested in organizing opposition to Reed’s drag story hour event. These efforts were accelerated by Gary Fox, a prominent local Evangelical preacher, businessman, and supporter of the campaign to elect city council president Thurber, Republican, as mayor of Wadsworth. With an incumbent Republican already seated as mayor, Fox and Thurber searched for a cause around which to distinguish Thurber’s candidacy.

Fox saw an opportunity to take advantage of a national hysteria, fueled by far-right extremists, that seeks to redefine LGBTQ rights advocacy as abusive “grooming” behavior targeting children. According to Reed, this messaging found its way into Fox’s sermons, and from there began to permeate the small community.

Local representatives of the fascist anti-trans group Project 171, a sub-sect of White Lives Matter, took up the call to action from Fox and supported by Thurber. Flyers containing Reed’s name and picture and labeling the activist a “groomer pedophile” and bearing the slogan “Shoot the pedo” circulated around town. Posts on social media openly threatened violence toward Reed and his family.

In the aftermath of the Rock and Roll Drag Queen Story Hour on March 11, alarming images of Nazis openly demonstrating against LGBTQ rights under the protection of local police circulated widely on social media. Most local residents were horrified at what their town officials had allowed to transpire in their city park. The 40 acres of Wadsworth Memorial Park were donated to the city in 1945 “in honor of 13 Wadsworth soldiers who gave their lives in the Second World War.”

Private Telegram messages revealed that the fascists were beginning to have some misgivings about the effectiveness of their tactics.

Encrypted Telegram chats shared with People’s World showed fascist organizers willing to admit that White Lives Matter had “screwed the pooch” and that the open display of Nazi flags and stiff-armed Hitler salutes may have hurt their efforts to influence legislation being considered at the Ohio Statehouse.

Even Bob Thurber, who had initially sought out help from fascist-aligned groups to boost his own political fortunes, now made public statements urging calm in the city.

Private texts show an effort to invent a new narrative—that Reed had in fact invited Nazi groups to his own event in an effort to garner sympathy and donations for his cause. “Do LGBTQ folks know that you are scamming their money for your own personal use?” read one public Facebook message shortly after the new approach had been developed in the private fascist chat groups.

Reed has worked as an organizer for dozens of charity events over the past eight years. A self-described “old broken-down rocker from the ’90s”, Reed wanted to show that “guys with tattoos and motorcycles are good people, too.” Reed has often centered his charity events around hard rock music and is known in activist circles as “the rock-n-roll humanist.”

He has also shown his tender side dressed as Santa Claus for events to distribute toys to kids. Motivated by a desire to show a “positive example of humanist atheism in the world,” Reed has extensive experience as a charity organizer.

Several years ago, Reed grew disturbed after the estrangement of a long-time friend who became deeply preoccupied with anti-trans conspiracy theories. Having known many members of the trans and broader LGBTQ community, Reed was inspired to action.

He soon found that working in this field exposed him to new levels of vitriol. He had four successive DJs drop out of the March 11 event due to threats, along with all of his co-organizers. Still, he was determined to continue, even if alone.

Reed’s car stopped one morning in the middle of an intersection. His oil pan had been drained by a puncture, and the engine had seized. The exact same damage occurred to the vehicle of a close friend on the same day. Reed is certain their vehicles were intentionally sabotaged. His wife, who works as a substitute teacher in the local schools and specializes in working with students with disabilities, has had to deal with multiple fraudulent abuse complaints filed against her.

Perhaps most alarming has been the indifference, if not hostility, of local police. Reed says he has not received any significant protection from law enforcement despite the countless threats made against him and his family.

On a recent afternoon, Reed and a friend were pulled from a parked car at gunpoint by Wadsworth Police, who claimed they suspected the men of narcotics trafficking. They searched the men and the vehicle for over an hour, ultimately finding nothing. No charges were filed, and both men were released. Reed feels certain the police knew who he was and intentionally targeted him.

Now, Reed faces a charge of criminal mischief from Wadsworth Police. In the aftermath of his removal from the city council meeting on March 23, Reed removed a POW/MIA flag and hoisted the LGBTQ ally flag at Wadsworth City Hall without permission of the city.

“The whole last month has been horrific. But my family, my wonderful wife stood by me every step of the way. I don’t know what we’re going to do next,” Reed said. He is permanently disabled after an accident years ago and deals with intense pain. Still, he dreams of spreading his “Equality Rocks” LGBTQ message and fundraising to other communities where “LGBTQ folks need to see some love.”

After a couple weeks of controversy, the G4TV host Froskurinn purged all of her tweets, calling it “spring cleaning” and joked that she should have tweeted “oops.”

“Cleaned out socials and got several messages asking if I was hacked. All is well! Just had it for close to forever and decided on a spring cleaning. Poop jokes returning,” Frosk tweeted, a day after posting a link to a manager to connect with “drama YouTubers” for interviews.

Frost then tweeted: “Although I should have just tweeted “whoops”. That would have been much funnier.”

Froskurinn spoke out against the sexism she had experienced because “not as bangable as the previous host” while confessing that she was just reading scripts, like other hosts, and not actually playing some of the games. Frosk had taken more heat for being factually incorrect on some news stories and decided to just doubled down with more insults.

Six Reasons

I am not going to argue that “The Holocaust didn’t happen.” My position is that some of it happened and some of it didn’t happen. Specifically, my thesis is that there were no gas chambers in the Nazi concentration camps. I am going to give six reasons for this:

In the last couple of days (May 19-20, 2005) some people have been posting links to this page on various sites. In spite of what I just said, they give the title as “Six Reasons the Holocaust didn’t happen.”

Why am I surrounded by morons????

Of course the Holocaust happened, in a general sense. The question is how much of it happened. Only an idiot would say “the Holocaust didn’t happen.” The other side tries to pretend that revisionism is “Holocaust denial.” When you say “the Holocaust didn’t happen,” you are just playing right into their hands, and discrediting revisionism.

Now, to continue what I was saying, here are the six reasons why the gas chamber story is a lie.

1. The physical evidence — the rooms themselves.
This has to be the starting point. If you could go to Auschwitz and find a room that was obviously a gas chamber, then there would be no such thing as revisionism. That would settle the matter once and for all. The problem is, when you go to Auschwitz and look at the room that is supposed to have been a gas chamber, you find a room that is obviously not a gas chamber.

2. The gap in the documentary record.
If there were documents covering the whole sequence of events, then there would be no such thing as revisionism. The problem is, the documents one would expect to find do not exist. We have documents relating to every aspect of the war, including every aspect of the Holocaust, except for the gassing of the Jews. It is not possible to gas six million people, or to do anything else involving millions of people, without leaving a paper trail. If the gassing happened, there would be thousands of documents to verify it, starting with the planning stages and continuing throughout the course of events. But no such paper trail exists.

3. The gap in the photographic record.
If there were photographs of the whole sequence of events, including photographs of piles of corpses in gas chambers, then there would be no such thing as revisionism. That would settle the matter immediately. The problem is that no such pictures exist.

To summarize the first three reasons: if we had the same kind of evidence for the gassing of the Jews that we have for real historical events (i.e. for events that actually happened), then everyone would acknowledge that there were gas chambers, and there would be no such thing as revisionism.

4. The testimony of witnesses doesn’t prove that there were gas chambers.

5. The fact that standard reference books can’t be trusted.
In the summer of 1995, when I was a novice in this subject, I went to a debate between Michael Shermer, editor of Skeptic magazine, and Mark Weber, a revisionist. It was supposed to be a debate, but actually it was what Michael Shermer calls a “meta-debate.” Dr. Shermer tried to pretend that there was nothing to argue about. However at one point he did condescend to say something about the evidence. He said that if anyone really wants to look at the evidence for the gas chambers, the place to look is Anatomy of the Auschwitz Death Camp, by Gutman and Berenbaum, especially the article by Pressac.

It probably never occurred to Dr. Shermer that anyone would actually read the book, but I did. I searched all over Los Angeles for this book, and finally found it at the UCLA bookstore. I read Pressac’s article, including the footnotes. Many of his assertions about gassing are not documented at all. When Pressac does give footnotes, they can’t be checked out. Most of them are of the form “Oswiecim, BW 1/19” or “Moscow/October Revolution, 7021-108-32, 46.”

However, there is one exception. Pressac says, on page 234,

The first gassing in crematorium IV did not go well. An SS man, wearing a face mask, had to climb a little ladder to get to a “window,” then open it with one hand and pour in the Zyklon B with the other. This acrobatic routine had to be repeated six times. When the gas-tight doors were opened to evacuate the gas, it was noticed that the natural aeration was ineffective; a door had to be cut immediately into the north corridor to get an air current flowing. [143]

Nashville-based drag queen Veronika Electronika said she was tricked into participating in the right-wing, anti-transgender documentary The War on Children, and that her interview was heavily edited to change what she said.
In a recent article, Rolling Stone detailed the “deceptive tactics” allegedly used by filmmakers Robby and Landon Starbuck, whose film purports to explore the so-called sexualizing and grooming of children. The official description of the film on its website says that it features “whistleblowers, leftists caught on camera, survivors of child mutilation, trafficking victims, corporate executives exposing the plan to sexualize children, the creator of Libs of TikTok, Senator Rand Paul, Riley Gaines, Drag Performer, Pornhub’s Sex Ed Instructor, and many more.”
But according to Rolling Stone’s reporting, LGBTQ+ people and allies were approached under false pretenses. Emails obtained by the magazine show that Starbuck’s staff approached potential subjects about being interviewed for a movie with working titles like Identity Rising and It Takes a Village. Per Rolling Stone, Elektronika and others were told that the documentary would focus on the struggles of trans children, and how queer and trans people’s lives and mental health have been affected by the recent onslaught of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.
Some emails obtained by the magazine also claimed that the documentary would be directed by “award-winning” cinematographer Matt Rodgers, with no mention of Starbuck’s involvement, and that it would be distributed by a “household name” streaming service. When participants pressed for further information on the documentary, staffers claimed that they were under non-disclosure agreements, according to the emails. Almost all of the details that were shared, according to Rolling Stone,were “misleading or outright false.” Robby Starbuck is credited as the director and producer, and the film is only available on X and the right-wing video services Rumble and My Movies Plus.
Elektronika told Rolling Stone that last June, she arrived at a studio space to participate in what she was told would be an interview "on her views regarding the struggles faced by children in the trans community, and how the lives and mental health of LGBTQ+ people were being affected by the recent slew of bans and restrictions” on gender-affirming care and drag. She asked the interviewers what their last names were, and when they answered the latter with “Starbuck,” she attempted to exit the conversation.
“When I saw Mr. Starbuck walk through the hallway, I was like, ‘Wait a minute. I know this fucker,” Electronika told Rolling Stone. She added that the couple “tried to convince me to stay and I said, ‘You need to stop recording right now.’ The little red light kept going ... and then they wouldn’t stop. So I started recording myself.”
The incident is featured in the documentary, with the Starbucks asking her to “denounce behavior that is sexually explicit around children.” Elektronika provided her own recording to Rolling Stone, and the magazine wrote that her recording “makes clear that her conversation with the filmmakers was heavily edited to make it seem like she was completely unwilling to condemn the exposure of children to sexual material.” According to Rolling Stone, some of Elektronika’s answers were “used piecemeal,” and some were entirely left out of the final cut.
Sprinkled in among the thousands of glowing reviews are a few negative ones: “Watching this made me feel like a bad person."
“Obviously, parents can dictate what materials their children are exposed to,” Electronika told Rolling Stone. “There are no drag shows, or drag story hours, or LGBT events that are happening where children are showing up unaccompanied by a guardian or an adult. ... When we do have a drag event that is happening, where minors may be present, it would be a rare occurrence for anything sexually explicit to be occurring on stage.”
As Rolling Stone notes, these manipulative interview tactics are commonplace within right-wing media. The magazine also wrote that right-wing influencers are increasingly using the documentary format to “bypass social media and platform guidelines prohibiting hate speech

Trope: Details of the Holocaust Have Been Exaggerated
Some so-called Holocaust “revisionists” claim they don’t deny the Holocaust happened, but simply dispute some of the findings of mainstream historians. They use this rhetorical strategy to try to avoid the moral disgust that many people feel towards Holocaust deniers, but upon examining many of their claims it is clear that their goal is indeed to deny the essential fact of the Holocaust: that approximately six million Jews were killed by the viciously antisemitic Nazi regime, including many in gas chambers.
Pseudo-academic Holocaust deniers and white supremacist, antisemitic trolls alike dispute the fact that six million Jews were killed, often claiming that the actual death toll is much lower, and many deaths were due to diseases like typhus rather than large-scale systemic murder. They also dismiss or minimize the role of the gas chambers, arguing that it was scientifically and technically impossible for the Nazis to have killed that many Jews, and the gas chambers were not used for extermination.
Holocaust deniers often highlight false or misleading statistics about the Jewish population before and after the war to support their claims. White supremacist trolls also attempt to minimize the scale of the Holocaust; their frequent use of the nonsensical phrase “six gorillion,” a clearly made-up number, is meant to indicate they believe the six million deaths are fake as well.
Trope: Witness Testimony is Fabricated or Inaccurate
Holocaust deniers often dispute the authenticity of Holocaust survivors’ testimonies, dismissing them as unreliable and inaccurate. They also dispute eyewitness accounts left behind by those who were murdered, claiming Jewish survivors and victims manipulate public opinion about Nazi Germany and make non-Jews feel guilty. Examples include claims that Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night has no historical value or that Anne Frank’s diary is a forgery.
Trope: Jews Invented the Holocaust for Financial and Political Gain
Holocaust deniers argue that the “Holocaust hoax” is designed to elicit guilt from Western countries and populations, which Jews then use for financial and political gain, including by pressuring Germany for reparations to Holocaust survivors.
Deniers imagine a vast, shadowy Jewish conspiracy that controls entire institutions and industries in order to disseminate the Holocaust narrative. They allege that white, Western Christian nations have been swindled and extorted by the Jews through the perpetuation of so-called “Holocaust mythology,” including educational curricula and Holocaust museums and memorials.
These claims draw on longstanding antisemitic tropes about alleged Jewish control and greed and the conspiratorial notion that Jews are engaged in a nefarious plot to take over the world.
Trope: The Holocaust is a Zionist Political Tool
For decades, anti-Zionism has been an important element of Holocaust denial. Many deniers, drawing on tropes about Jews being greedy and deceitful, claim that Jews invented the Holocaust “story” in order to manipulate global powers and gain support for the creation of the state of Israel in 1948. They also claim that Zionists have continued to exaggerate or fabricate the scale of the Holocaust to increase political and financial support for Israel during periods of conflict with other countries, to distract from Israel’s actions against Palestinians and to silence Israel’s critics.
Hardcore Holocaust denial organizations and ideologues also push the narrative that the collective stifling of Holocaust denial is an example of supposed global Zionist control and the power of the “Israel lobby.” These arguments lean toward broader conspiracy theories about alleged attempts by “globalists,” “elites,” Jews and Zionists to control discourse across the world.
⁣Trope: Jews are Responsible for Their Own Persecution
Some Holocaust deniers choose to blame the victims while also denying the most heinous crimes of the Holocaust. This trope alleges that, to the extent that Jews were targeted, it was due to direct Jewish collaboration with Hitler’s regime, and that those Jews who did die during this period were causalities of a Zionist-led and financed effort to work with Nazis directly in order to establish the State of Israel and persuade Jews to emigrate there. These deniers see no contradiction between denying the existence of the gas chambers and the Final Solution, and blaming Zionists for whatever Jewish persecution they acknowledge actually occurred.
The promotion of this trope distorts historical facts by downplaying the responsibility of the Nazis in perpetrating the Holocaust and reframing specific events both prior to and during World War II to fit their narrative. It also serves to portray Zionists historically and today as callous, deceitful and evil people who will take any actions necessary to achieve their goals.
