⁣President Trump issues unconditional pardon for the life sentence of Ross Ulbricht, calling the people who convicted him "scum."

Ulbricht was the founder of the dark website Silk Road.

He was convicted in 2015 for drug trafficking and conspiracy to commit money laundering and computer hacking.

Ulbricht was sentenced to two life sentences, plus 40 years, a sentence worse than the worst drug sellers on the site.

A routine request turned into a carefully orchestrated trap when a California parole agent persuaded Natalie Marinero, a transgender woman from El Salvador, to step outside her home. The moment she did, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were waiting to arrest her.

"I just need you to sign... and I go, and that's it," the parole agent told Marinero before she stepped outside. But the reality was far different.

Marinero had been living at A New Way of Life, a Los Angeles-based reentry home for formerly incarcerated women, per FOX7. After serving 17 and a half years in prison for a second-degree murder conviction in 2005, she had been rebuilding her life.

"It's hard to find the words to say how the government called here, tricked Natalie, and lured her outside where ICE was waiting for her," Susan Burton, founder of A New Way of Life told local news.

"Natalie got caught in a bad situation where she was at the wrong place at the wrong time. She paid her debt to society, and now she was trying to start anew," Burton added.

"Natalie paid her debt, yeah, and she's been making great choices, really working on herself, internally, externally, like the whole package," Susan Hefner, the housing supervisor at the facility, said.

Marinero now faces deportation to El Salvador, a country known for its violence against transgender individuals. Trans women in the country have a life expectancy 41 years below the national average. Police violence, gang extortion and discrimination are among the main threats they face daily, according to Amnesty International.

"I am so saddened by ICE coming and taking Natalie away. It's just horrifying to think of what will happen to her if they return her to El Salvador," Burton said.

Her case, indicative of ongoing unknowns and fears about ICE's strategy.

Attorneys nationwide are urging immigrants and Black Indigenous People of Color communities to know their rights when confronted by ICE, including remaining silent and refusing entry without a warrant. ICE has arrested more than 7,400 people in nine days as of Jan. 31, but details on who they are prioritizing remains unclear.

The question everyone asks about Ross Perot is: “How would the outcome of the 1992 election have been different if he wasn’t in the race?”

The conventional wisdom is that George H.W. Bush would have won. Perot, an independent candidate, was a former Republican and ran on a conservative economic message. He won almost 20 percent of the popular vote. Most of his support would have gone to Bush, right?

In the latest installment in our documentary podcast series re-examining past presidential elections, we dig through the archives and talk to people involved in all three 1992 campaigns to suss out Perot’s true impact on the race. We found an answer to our original question — “What would’ve happened if Ross Perot didn’t run?” — but we also found ourselves asking an even more complicated question: “What would have happened if Ross Perot had run as a major-party candidate?”

Donald Trump’s candidacy gives us glimpse of what might have happened if Perot had run within the two party system. Both Perot and Trump ran as political outsiders, successful businessmen and populists. Their messages were simple. In Perot’s case, the national debt was “destroying the country,” and in Trump’s case, illegal immigration is “destroying the country.” Both men were protectionist on trade and said they would demand U.S. allies pay more for defense. But many of their policy proposals were vague or nonexistent.

Both the Perot and Trump campaigns relied on their candidate’s charisma, a simple message and a successful media strategy. Perot was an early darling of cable TV news, frequently appearing on talk shows like “Larry King Live.” He was also willing to harness unusual media strategies — he even did 30-minute infomercials, complete with charts. Trump’s presence on American television has been so ubiquitous that by March one firm that tracks advertising estimated he had received $2 billion worth of free media.

Both campaigns broke completely with political norms and proved surprisingly resilient in the face of prodding journalism and suggestions that the candidates were unfit to be president.

As Democratic strategist James Carville put it, “If Donald Trump is the kind of Jesus of the disenchanted, displaced non-college white voter, then Perot was the John the Baptist of that sort of movement.”

The difference is: Perot ran outside the two-party system. Nearly 20 million people cast a ballot for him, but he didn’t win a single vote in the Electoral College. Trump has run within the system. He got 13 million votes in the Republican primary, enough to win the nomination, and enough to put him within striking distance of the White House.

“Even though Americans say that they’re not partisan, they still have a home,” said Republican pollster Frank Luntz. “They still start by being a Republican or a Democrat and then they move based on the candidates or the environment of that election.”

Since 1992, the common narratives about Perot have been that he was a spoiler (unlikely) or that he was an anomaly (the most successful third-party candidate since 1912, at least in terms of the share of the popular vote won). But Trump’s rise suggests that Perot, a charismatic populist, may have been something else: a harbinger.

If you could work in any type of office, what would it be? Would you choose a corner office high in a skyscraper? How about one overlooking the ocean?

In addition, SubTropolis is secure. It’s safe from natural disasters. The limestone around it is six times stronger than concrete. The complex is also laid out in an orderly manner. It has over eight miles of roadways and two miles of railroad tracks for travel to and from the offices.

These features have lured many businesses to this unique location. For example, the U.S. Postal Service keeps most of its stamps there. A company named Underground Vaults and Storage stores the original reels of some Hollywood movies. This includes films like “Gone with the Wind” and “The Wizard of Oz.”

SubTropolis isn’t the only place of its kind. There are similar complexes in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. There are even other underground offices in Kansas City. In total, more than 10% of industrial space in Kansas City is underground. That number will likely continue to grow. SubTropolis could one day grow to over 55 million square feet of space.

Still not sure you’d like to work underground all the time? It’s not for everyone! But there are definite benefits. It’s a cool, unique environment. Plus, in the winter, you don’t have to wear a jacket to work. And in the summer, your car doesn’t turn into an oven after sitting in the Sun all day! This is one of the reasons that, to this day, it’s somewhat difficult to identify who the Jews of the Weimar Republic were. What this means is that, although the identity of every Jew I list above is verified, there are undoubtedly other prominent and non-prominent Jews I was unable to identify. The list provided above should not be viewed as wholly representative of the Jewish influence within Weimar Germany. But even just considering the list above, you can see the Jewish influence was substantial for a race of people comprising less than 1% of the total German population. This Jewish overrepresentation is even more substantial when you consider that many of these Jewish amalgamations of overrepresentation occurred within many of Germany’s most important social institutions.
