Oxitec, a British biotech company, has a novel way to get rid of mosquitoes: release more mosquitoes.

To help combat a growing mosquito population in Florida, Oxitec has proposed a plan that involves releasing genetically modified male mosquitoes into the Florida Keys so that they will mate with existing females and hatch larvae that won't live long enough to bite people, the Huffington Post reported:

After learning about Oxitec's plans, Key West resident Mila de Mier set up a Change.org petition to stop the company from releasing the mutant mosquitoes:

In the petition's description, Mier said, "Nearly all experiments with genetically-modified crops have eventually resulted in unintended consequences…Why would we not expect GM (genetically modified) insects, especially those that bite humans, to have similar unintended negative consequences? Will the dengue virus mutate (think antibiotic resistant MRSA) and become even more dangerous?"

The petition now has over 100,000 signatures.

Mier told Keys.net that she wants to see further long-term studies done on the mosquitoes before they are released in her backyard. Mier added, "I don't want my family to be guinea pigs. We need to look at the bigger picture of the environment, and think about could happen if something goes wrong."

According to Florida Today, Oxitec has defended its work saying the genetically mutated mosquitoes are more environmentally friendly than the use of pesticides:

After a dayslong occupation by protesters at the Portland State University library, city officers cleared people from inside and outside of the building Thursday morning.

Activists opposed to Israel’s role in the ongoing war in Gaza took over the library Monday night. Since then, university and city officials told protesters several times that they must leave, or they could be arrested. PSU President Ann Cudd said Wednesday that anyone inside the library was criminally trespassing.

Over the past week, demonstrators called for Portland State to cut ties from companies connected to Israel, among other demands.

Portland police announced just after 10 a.m. Thursday that they had finished their removal of those still gathered in the library.

Protesters flee library

Several dozen protesters fled the PSU library shortly before 9 a.m., briefly gathered on the building’s steps, and then quickly darted in different directions through campus.

Minutes later, more than a dozen state troopers in riot gear pulled up and joined officers already on campus.

It appeared that protesters left the library from a different exit than where police had entered.

At Southwest Montgomery Street and Southwest 10th Avenue, near the library, another group of more than 50 demonstrators linked arms chanting “let them go,” in reference to at least two people arrested by Portland police. The protesters appeared to be attempting to block the police from leaving the area with arrested demonstrators, but a police van and several squad cars were able to leave around 9:45 a.m.

PSU president responds

In a statement, Cudd expressed gratitude to city and state police and other leaders.

“What we’ve seen take place so far on the Park Blocks, while distressing to see, has been peaceful and calm overall, which is an immense relief,” Cudd said. “The safety and well being of our campus community is our top priority.”

Cudd said police entered the library “only after extensive negotiations using faculty members as intermediaries.”

Cudd did not indicate when campus would reopen, but said PSU looks forward “to opening our campus to all students as soon as possible.” The school announced earlier Thursday that it would be closed for the day.

Police enter library

Earlier Thursday morning, police announced they would clear out the people who were still in the library. Several blocks around the library were closed as police began the operation just after 6 a.m. They estimated it would take hours — it lasted four.

Police shared on X, formerly Twitter, that officers were inside the library at 7:47 a.m. Thursday. Officers confirmed shortly afterward that they had arrested two people outside of the library. No additional details were released.

Police used a fire escape to get into the building, according to journalists with the student-run PSU Vanguard, and some officers were carrying chainsaws.

Portland police also said on X around 8:10 a.m. that officers in the library were armed with “40mm less-lethal launchers,” which the department says are tools for public events and regular patrol. In the same post, Portland police said officers did not have tear gas inside the library.

PSU issued a shelter-in-place alert for two student residence buildings close to the library, Montgomery and Blackstone halls, around 9 a.m.

Response to protests

Aiden Griffen is a sophomore at PSU and lives close to the library. He said he’s been watching the protests unfold and supports some aspects of the demonstrations.

“While they were protesting peacefully there was a lot of support for the protesters,” Griffen, 20, said. “The library break-in was a real tipping point — I and a lot of other people lost favor with them and now really are not fans of what’s going on. Some people, though, are still in support.”

Gov. Tina Kotek issued a statement Thursday morning that, in part, addressed the “acts of vandalism seen this week at the Portland State University library and against nearby businesses.”

“These actions are in direct opposition to Oregon values and threaten working people, families, businesses, and our community as a whole. The Oregon State Police have launched a response on the outer perimeter of Portland State University. The state is prepared to exercise the full extent of the law,” Kotek stated.

Tension spills into the streets

As police cleared the PSU library, there were some altercations between protesters and officers. Demonstrators attempted to block police from arresting protesters along Southwest Broadway.

Jeffrey Edward Epstein appeared at his sentencing dressed comfortably in a blue blazer, blue shirt, jeans and gray sneakers. His attorney, Jack Goldberger, was at his side.

At the end of the 68-minute hearing, the 55-year-old silver-haired financier — accused of sexually abusing dozens of underage girls — was fingerprinted and handcuffed, just like any other criminal sentenced in Florida.

But inmate No. W35755 would not be treated like other convicted sex offenders in the state of Florida, which has some of the strictest sex offender laws in the nation.

Ten years before the #metoo movement raised awareness about the kid-glove handling of powerful men accused of sexual abuse, Epstein’s lenient sentence and his extraordinary treatment while in custody are still the source of consternation for the victims he was accused of molesting when they were minors.

Beginning as far back as 2001, Epstein lured a steady stream of underage girls to his Palm Beach mansion to engage in nude massages, masturbation, oral sex and intercourse, court and police records show. The girls — mostly from disadvantaged, troubled families — were recruited from middle and high schools around Palm Beach County. Epstein would pay the girls for massages and offer them further money to bring him new girls every time he was at his home in Palm Beach, according to police reports.

The girls, now in their late 20s and early 30s, allege in a series of federal civil lawsuits filed over the past decade that Epstein sexually abused hundreds of girls, not only in Palm Beach, but at his homes in Manhattan, New Mexico and in the Caribbean.

In 2007, the FBI had prepared a 53-page federal indictment charging Epstein with sex crimes that could have put him in federal prison for life. But then-Miami U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta signed off on a non-prosecution agreement, which was negotiated, signed and sealed so that no one would know the full scope of Epstein’s crimes. The indictment was shelved, never to be seen again.

Epstein instead pleaded guilty to lesser charges in state court, and was required to register as a sex offender. He was sentenced to 18 months incarceration.

But Epstein — who had a long list of powerful, politically connected friends — didn’t go to state prison like most sex offenders in Florida. Instead, the multimillionaire was assigned to a private wing of the Palm Beach County stockade, where he was able to hire his own security detail. Even then, he didn’t spend much time in a cell. He was allowed to go to his downtown West Palm Beach office for work release, up to 12 hours a day, six days a week, records show.

He was permitted to hire his own private psychologist for his required sex-offender counseling, and after his release from jail, his subsequent year of probation under house arrest was filled with trips on his corporate jet to Manhattan and to his home in the U.S. Virgin Islands — all approved by the courts with no objections from the state.

On the morning of his sentencing in 2008, none of Epstein’s victims were in the courtroom to protest his soft jail term or the unusual provisions of his incarceration and probation — and that was by design.

Emails and letters contained in court filings reveal the cozy, behind-the-scenes dealings between federal prosecutors and Epstein’s indomitable legal team during the run-up to his federal plea deal, as they discussed ways to minimize his criminal charges and avoid informing the girls about the details of the deal until after the case was resolved.

That arrangement benefited Epstein in a number of ways. Unlike other high-profile sex crime cases, federal prosecutors agreed to keep his sentencing quiet, thereby limiting media coverage. His underage victims — identified in FBI documents — weren’t told about the plea deal so they weren’t in court, where they could voice their objections and possibly sway the judge to give Epstein a harsher sentence or reject the agreement altogether.

When we talk about sex—whether great, good, bad, or unlawful—we often turn to consent as both our erotic and moral savior. We ask questions like, What counts as sexual consent? How do we teach consent to impressionable youth, potential predators, and victims? How can we make consent sexy?

⁣Jodie Goodman, the former executive director to Carroll County Mental Health Advocates has reportedly admitted to stealing more than $20,000 from the nonprofit that benefits some of the community's most vulnerable.

The former Executive Director of the Carroll County Mental Health Advocates who is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the private non-profit over at least a two-year period – will not serve any jail time – following her “guilty” plea deal accepted in a Carroll County courtroom on Tuesday.

In January of 2024… about a month after Jodie Goodman was recognized as ‘Woman of The Year’ by the Carroll County Women Business Alliance – the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office began investigating allegations that Goodman had been misusing funds from the program. She was terminated from her position by the mental health advocates board of directors soon after.

The district attorney’s office on Tuesday said they are aware that “a theft occurred at least 150 times during a two-year period.”

The plea deal provides that thefts Goodman committed in 2022 would be considered one charge of theft by taking; a second charge of theft by taking would encompass the thefts committed in 2023.

Goodman had transferred CCMHA funding to debit cards – which she spent on personal items and gifts. She is alleged to have spent the non-profit’s funds on spray tans, nail salons, waxing, massages, gift cards, makeup, personal Amazon delivered to her home, DoorDash, food, and alcohol.

Goodman receives 30 years-probation (15 years per count). Goodman can see her probation time lessened significantly if she meets certain standards after 3 years.

Goodman is ordered to pay back more than $21k in restitution.

Goodman’s counsel – Villa Rica based attorney Mac Pilgrim spoke to WLBB Radio Tuesday evening. He said he believes that the deal agreed to by the prosecution, the defense and the judge in which Goodman avoids jail time – is typical of cases for clients accused of stealing similar amounts of funding – and having no history of theft or violence.

“In thefts of this nature, of this amount, generally speaking – unless the client has a particular history of theft or violence – probation sentences are common because the reason for probation sentences most times is that to make the victim whole. In this case – the county and the taxpayers, which I’m one, I live here and I pay taxes as well – is to make the victim whole and by paying back the $21 ,000 the county will be made financially whole for my client.

This has been a very, very hard time in her life. She has had, as I mentioned in court, she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She had been diagnosed with manic episodes. This has taken its toll on her, on her husband, on her family, on both of her children, both of whom were school-aged. And she is just now coming out of her manic state. She’s coming out of her very depressed state.

She admitted she did it. She never denied it. So I think people should get credit for coming forward and saying, yes, I did what you said I did, yes, I am guilty, and accepting the responsibility of that. So I think in that regard, this was, in fact, a fair plea.

I know there’s a lot of people – I’ve already seen some social media on this station’s Facebook page that people think differently of that, and they have a right to do that. However, I believe that this was, in fact, a fair plea, and I think it was fair to both sides. And the county will be made economically whole, which hopefully is what we want as a people – I think – is that we are not taken advantage of or made whole, and that’s going to happen. So I’m happy with it.”

The court revealed on Tuesday that Goodman’s family has already collected approximately 1-thousand dollars that would go towards the 21-thousand dollars required for restitution in this case.

Judge W. Travis Sakrison ruled that Goodman’s offenses would not fall under the First Offender Act… after hearing the victim-impact-statement presented by the victimized non-profit’s current chairman of the board.

Sen. Grove‘s Measure to Make Purchasing a Child for Sex a Felony, Rejected by Senate Public Safety Committee

Today, the Senate Public Safety Committee forced hostile amendments on Senator Shannon Grove and passed her bill, Senate Bill 1414 (SB 1414) out of committee without her consent.

Senator Grove presented SB 1414 which seeks to strengthen protections for minor victims by making the act of soliciting, agreeing to engage in or engaging in any form of commercial sex with a child a felony offense, with sex offender registry required on repeat offenses. SB 1414 is a bipartisan measure, joint authored by Senator Anna Caballero (D-Merced) and Senator Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park), and co-sponsored by Love Never Fails and 3Strands Global Foundation.

Instead of voting on Senator Grove’s bill as proposed, members of the committee instead forced hostile amendments and voted the bill out of committee without Senator Grove’s consent. Now, instead of making the purchase of all children a felony, the committee has made the solicitation or purchase of children for sex punishable by a wobbler, which can still be charged as a misdemeanor, punishable by as little as 2 days in jail or up to a $10,000 fine.

A felony can only be charged if the child solicited or purchased was 15 years old or younger, and unfortunately, the buyer would still be ineligible for prison. If a buyer has a previous conviction of purchasing a child under 16 years old and is convicted on a second offense of buying child under 16 years old and the victim and buyer are more than 10 years apart in age, only then would the buyer have to register as a tier one sex offender (10-years).

“I’m incredibly disappointed that not only did my colleagues reject my proposal to make the buying of children for sex a prison felony, but that I was blindsided when they amended my bill without my consent," said Senator Grove.

“Children of all ages deserve to be protected under the law and a simple fine after buying a child for sex is not an appropriate punishment. Californians across the state have made their voices heard and they want this law changed. Unfortunately, the members of the public safety committee continue their soft on crime approach at the expense of California’s most vulnerable, our children," concluded Senator Grove.

Senator Grove is actively discussing the next steps with her joint authors, coalition of survivors and advocates who are deeply invested in the outcome of this bill. She is committed to continuing the fight for all victims and survivors of sexual exploitation.
