Blind-sided and fuming City Hall officials are bad-mouthing NYPD Commish Keechant Sewell over her abrupt quitting of the top post as part of their “cult mode” to defend Hizzoner, sources told The Post on Tuesday.

Stung by Sewell’s sudden announcement Monday that she is leaving, Mayor Eric Adams’ aides are furiously pegging the outgoing commissioner as selfish for blindsiding the administration, sources said.

“She was always all about herself,” a staffer snipped, according to sources. “She knew what she was getting into.”

Another source said, “There was clearly some hostility” at City Hall after Sewell turned in her resignation.

“Those guys go into their cult mode,” the source said of Adams’ supporters when faced with opposition.

Sewell, 51, stunned the mayor when she emailed department brass Monday to announce she was stepping down after 18 months as the city’s top cop — and the first woman to hold the post.

“I showed her love,” Adams said when pressed by reporters Tuesday about why his top cop is leaving. “I adored what the commissioner was doing.

“The rest of you should ask, ‘What role did you play?’ ” he said grumpily.

Unlike past top cops, she didn’t have sole authority to pick brass to fill vital positions and had her bids to promote aides in her office nixed by City Hall, the sources said.

But despite the internal NYPD turmoil, Sewell gained the respect of the department’s rank and file — and several city pols — after overseeing a drop in citywide shootings during her first year at the helm.

“Commissioner Sewell broke barriers as the first woman, and first black woman, to lead the largest police force in the country,” City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams said in a statement.

On Thursday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences expelled him from its membership.

Here are some key dates in the long-running case, which has kept Polanski living in exile in Europe:

March 10, 1977 — Roman Polanski conducts a photo shoot with a 13-year-old girl at Jack Nicholson’s house. As she later testifies, Polanski gives the girl champagne and part of a sedative during the shoot, then forced her to have sex. She says she repeatedly told Polanski no during intercourse, but says she did not fight him because she was afraid of him. The girl’s mother calls police after finding out what happened.

March 24, 1977 — A grand jury indicts Polanski on six felony charges, including rape, furnishing a controlled substance to a minor and sodomy. He later pleads not guilty at arraignment.

August 1977 — Polanski pleads guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor and a judge orders the director to undergo further proceedings.

September 1977 — A judge orders the director to undergo a 90-day diagnostic screening at a California state prison to help determine sentencing.

January 1978 — The diagnostic screening — completed after 42 days — recommends Polanski be placed on probation.

Feb. 1, 1978 — Polanski flees the United States on eve of sentencing after learning that Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Laurence Rittenband intended to send Polanski back to prison. An arrest warrant is issued, confining Polanski’s movements to France, Poland and Switzerland. Polanski alleges Rittenband met with a prosecutor who was not assigned to the case — without Polanski’s lawyer present — to discuss sentencing.

September 1997 — A new judge meets with prosecutors and Polanski’s attorney to discuss the case in chambers. The meeting is not reported, and elements of the discussion remain in dispute. Polanski’s attorney contends the judge wanted Polanski’s sentencing hearing televised, which the judge denies. Prosecutors contend Polanski sought to be sentenced without reporters present, which the director denies.

November 2002 — Lawyers for Conde Nast Publications successfully unseal grand jury testimony presented in Polanski’s case.

March 2003 — Polanski wins the best director Academy Award for “The Pianist,” but is unable to collect his Oscar in person due to an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

December 2008 — Polanski’s lawyers seek a dismissal of the charges against him. His motion is supported by his victim.

February 2009 — A Los Angeles Superior Court judge rejects Polanski’s dismissal motion, stating that Polanski must appear in court to resolve his case. The order goes into effect in May 2009.

July 2009 — Polanski appeals the February ruling in his case.

September 2009 — Polanski is arrested in Switzerland pursuant to a warrant. Extradition proceedings begin.

December 2009 — A California court panel rejects Polanski’s appeal, ruling that the director must appear in court to resolve his case.

January 2010 — Polanski’s lawyers request the director be sentenced without being present in Los Angeles.

The question everyone asks about Ross Perot is: “How would the outcome of the 1992 election have been different if he wasn’t in the race?”

The conventional wisdom is that George H.W. Bush would have won. Perot, an independent candidate, was a former Republican and ran on a conservative economic message. He won almost 20 percent of the popular vote. Most of his support would have gone to Bush, right?

In the latest installment in our documentary podcast series re-examining past presidential elections, we dig through the archives and talk to people involved in all three 1992 campaigns to suss out Perot’s true impact on the race. We found an answer to our original question — “What would’ve happened if Ross Perot didn’t run?” — but we also found ourselves asking an even more complicated question: “What would have happened if Ross Perot had run as a major-party candidate?”

Donald Trump’s candidacy gives us glimpse of what might have happened if Perot had run within the two party system. Both Perot and Trump ran as political outsiders, successful businessmen and populists. Their messages were simple. In Perot’s case, the national debt was “destroying the country,” and in Trump’s case, illegal immigration is “destroying the country.” Both men were protectionist on trade and said they would demand U.S. allies pay more for defense. But many of their policy proposals were vague or nonexistent.

Both the Perot and Trump campaigns relied on their candidate’s charisma, a simple message and a successful media strategy. Perot was an early darling of cable TV news, frequently appearing on talk shows like “Larry King Live.” He was also willing to harness unusual media strategies — he even did 30-minute infomercials, complete with charts. Trump’s presence on American television has been so ubiquitous that by March one firm that tracks advertising estimated he had received $2 billion worth of free media.

Both campaigns broke completely with political norms and proved surprisingly resilient in the face of prodding journalism and suggestions that the candidates were unfit to be president.

As Democratic strategist James Carville put it, “If Donald Trump is the kind of Jesus of the disenchanted, displaced non-college white voter, then Perot was the John the Baptist of that sort of movement.”

The difference is: Perot ran outside the two-party system. Nearly 20 million people cast a ballot for him, but he didn’t win a single vote in the Electoral College. Trump has run within the system. He got 13 million votes in the Republican primary, enough to win the nomination, and enough to put him within striking distance of the White House.

“Even though Americans say that they’re not partisan, they still have a home,” said Republican pollster Frank Luntz. “They still start by being a Republican or a Democrat and then they move based on the candidates or the environment of that election.”

Since 1992, the common narratives about Perot have been that he was a spoiler (unlikely) or that he was an anomaly (the most successful third-party candidate since 1912, at least in terms of the share of the popular vote won). But Trump’s rise suggests that Perot, a charismatic populist, may have been something else: a harbinger.

The Daily Mail has an audio recording of what appears to be Arizona’s top Republican official trying to bribe Kari Lake (R) not to run for U.S. Senate.

Jeff DeWit, chair of the Arizona Republican Party, can be heard asking Lake, a close ally of Donald Trump, to name her price to stay out of politics for two years.

Said DeWit: “There are very powerful people who want to keep you out.”

DeWit also told Lake that he thinks Trump will lose the 2024 election and it is time to make way for someone else.

Conspiracy Theorists Spread New Fake Story About Chabad Tunnel ‘Collapsing’
The heavily politicized drama over an illegal excavation under a synagogue in Brooklyn has produced even more misinformation

One construction worker was killed in a building collapse in the Borough Park neighborhood of Brooklyn on Friday afternoon, local news outlets reported.

But the tragic accident led misinformation accounts and conspiracy theorists on X (formerly Twitter) to falsely claim the incident had taken place in Crown Heights, concocting a wholly fake story about the tunnel beneath the Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters in Crown Heights suddenly caving in.

As the Borough Park commotion drew hordes of emergency responders, social media vultures went to work, misrepresenting the footage of ambulances, firefighters, and Hasidic Jewish bystanders to push propaganda about Chabad and Jewish people in general.

“BREAKING: 60 FOOT NEW YORK TUNNELS UNDER CHABAD SYNAGOGUE ARE COLLAPSING,” wrote Sulaiman Ahmed, a commentator on X/Twitter who has significantly raised his profile by posting misleading material about the Israel-Hamas war (whereas he previously focused on defending misogynist manosphere influencer Andrew Tate, who is currently facing trial on human trafficking charges in Romania). “Emergency crews rush to stabilize the situation,” Ahmed added. The video shown in the tweet is from the Borough Park collapse site, not Crown Heights, which is some four miles away.

The synagogue passageway, dug illegally and in secret by a splinter sect of Chabad, the Hasidic community which owns the synagogue (the offshoot group sought to retain access to the property), was discovered in early January thanks to a chaotic brawl and several arrests as engineers attempted to fill the tunnel. The story immediately unleashed a storm of antisemitic conspiracy theories alleging a sophisticated underground network used for human trafficking or even ritual sacrifice — a centuries-old conspiracist trope known as blood libel.

Such claims resurged with the widespread and false attribution of images from the Borough Park scene as activity at the Chabad headquarters. “The Jewish sex trafficking tunnels in New York under a synagogue have collapsed,” read one untrue tweet, which included the false claim that “many civilians have been crushed.”

Put simply, the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines are mRNA vaccines, whereas the Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca vaccines are adenovirus-vector vaccines.
Are the COVID-19 vaccines safe?
Over 400 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been given in the US, with almost 7 billion doses administered worldwide. For the vast majority of people, including those with vascular disease, the benefits of vaccination against COVID-19 overwhelmingly outweigh any risks. These vaccines are undergoing continuous and intense safety monitoring. Across numerous clinical trials, the vaccines have been shown to be safe and effective, and they clearly reduce the risk of serious infection, hospitalization, and death related to COVID-19.
Although rare side effects have been reported with these vaccines, these events occur much less frequently than the often severe and life-threatening complications that occur with COVID-19. In summary, these vaccines are safe and effective.

In the US, this includes monitoring through the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), which is a national early warning system that the US FDA uses to monitor the safety of vaccines after they are authorized or licensed for use. VAERS helps to detect unusual or unexpected reporting patterns of adverse events for vaccines.
