What's the claim?
A 14-second video from an address by U.S. President Joe Biden is circulating on social media with the claims insinuating that the American leader admitted to using directed energy weapons or DEWs during recent wildfires. In the video, Biden is heard saying, "If you fly over these areas that are burned to the ground, you'll see, in the midst of 20 homes that are just totally destroyed, one home sitting there because it had the right roof on it."
A user on Facebook shared the video with the caption, "What we have here is Biden admitting DEWs (Direct Energy Weapons) don't affect roofs that are blue. I swear it's like we're being punked or better yet in a Twilight Zone like I've said forever (sic)." Archived versions of the post and similar ones can be viewed here and here.
This narrative is also viral on social media platforms like TikTok and X (formerly Twitter). Archived versions of the posts can be accessed here and here.
Several users have also linked Biden's speech to the recent wildfires in Texas. They have attributed the February Texas wildfires, reported to be one of the biggest disasters of the kind in the region, to DEWs based on the viral video. Such claims (archived here) follow the same trend as observed during the 2023 fires in Maui, Hawaii (spelled Hawai'i locally), when conspiracy theorists linked the tragedy to DEWs.
However, we found that President Biden's remarks have been taken out of context.
What did we find?
We traced the origin of the viral video and found that it was taken from a speech the President delivered on March 1.
Upon reviewing the extended video posted by the White House, the same day, it is evident that when Biden mentioned "roof" during his address, he was discussing improved methods for withstanding natural disasters and had mentioned nothing about DEWs.
We also accessed the full transcript of Biden's speech in question from the White House website and found that Biden was discussing "standards" and "building codes," in the context of the Texas wildfires. He did not say anything about the color blue as claimed in the viral post.
Around the 1:48 timestamp in the White House video, we can hear him saying, "Well, my administration is going to keep building on the progress we've made fighting the climate crisis. And we're going to keep — help folks rebuild themselves in the wake of these disasters. And we rebuild to the standards that are up — the up-to-date standards and building codes and the rest. Because a lot of—if you fly over these areas that are burned to the ground, you'll see, in the midst of 20 homes that are just totally destroyed, one home sitting there because it had the right roof on it."
This confirms that Biden was addressing the standard rules and building codes to withstand natural disasters such as the Texas wildfire.
The narrative that blue-colored items allegedly survive DEW-induced fires, implying that many wildfires are not accidental but caused intentionally by advanced weapons (like DEWs), has become widely popular in the past months, and the theory was also propagated during the Maui fires. Additionally, aerial visuals of the aftermath of the Texas wildfire published by Reuters show a residential structure that is not blue left unburnt in the fire, as seen in the image below.
Aerial photos and drone shots of the aftermath of the wildfires published by other news outlets, like Getty Images, Reuters, AFP, and CBS News, also show structures with white and brown roofs that were not damaged by the wildfires.
The Texas wildfires
Texas, particularly the Panhandle region, has been battling massive wildfires since late February 2024. According to a report by the Associated Press, the fire caused widespread devastation. It prompted evacuations in a handful of small communities, destroyed as many as 500 buildings, and killed two people and thousands of livestock.

LAKE WORTH, Fla. – New details have been released regarding a controversial and violent arrest caught on video in Palm Beach County.

Body camera video shows what led officers to a rough and bloody encounter that occurred earlier this year.

The violent takedown of Christopher Connelly, which has now been seen by tens of thousands on social media, is now being challenged in court.

The rough arrest happened back in February.

What led up to the arrest is being shown in the newly released body camera footage.

It shows Palm Beach County deputies responding to a call about a man refusing to leave a property in Lake Worth and causing a disturbance.

Officers said the man, identified as Connelly, was apparently under the influence.

They’re heard giving him multiple verbal commands, but Connelly refused to follow them.

Moments later, he made a run towards the property.

Witnesses recorded as deputies forced him down and struck him repeatedly.

Connelly is now being represented by attorney Pat Wilson.

“There will be a lot of people who see this video and say, ‘Hey, he had plenty of chances to leave and he didn’t.’ How do you respond to that?” asked Local 10 News’ Christian De La Rosa.

“Even if an officer tells someone to leave and they don’t, or tells them to leave and they run away, it doesn’t mean you get to beat them up and repeatedly hit him in the head,” Wilson responded.

Connelly was initially charged with battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer with violence, but since the release of the cellphone video, Wilson said the charge has been reduced to simple battery.

Local 10 News reached out the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office for comment but have not received a response at the time of this story’s publishing

Part 1: The Jedi barely appear in the original Star Wars trilogy. Obi-Wan and Yoda are both hermits hiding from their own failures in distant corners of the galaxy, and both die after teaching Luke Skywalker a bit about the Force. Luke himself never technically completes his training, though he gets close enough to be considered a Jedi master in later films. So the Jedi exist more as a exciting symbol in those early films, as well as a mystery: How could a group of people so wise and powerful have just ceased to exist?

The solution to that mystery unfortunately robbed the Jedi of most of the mystique that Obi-Wan and Yoda gave them in the early movies. It turns out the Jedi got wiped out because they were soft, self-congratulatory, and far too hung up on rules that did more harm than good. If Mace Windu had just told young Anakin that he was allowed to go kiss Padme, for Pete’s sake, the Empire never would have been created. The Clone Wars and Rebels cartoons did a bit better by the Jedi, but on the whole, they are, like Boba Fett(*), a George Lucas creation where the more they get to do, the less thrilling they become.

(*) A.K.A. the guy who turned out to be so boring, his own show had to morph into a Mandalorian bonus season partway through.

The newest Disney+ Star Wars series, The Acolyte, at least attempts to openly confront the reality that the Jedi are smug, complacent, and kind of terrible. But the execution of that idea is spotty throughout the four episodes given to critics. And the decision to set it a century before the rise of the Empire seems to defeat the purpose of the whole thing, because the Jedi of The Phantom Menace have learned exactly zero lessons.

The Acolyte was created by writer-director Leslye Headland, who was one of the co-creators of Netflix’s great sci-fi comedy Russian Doll(*). Headland has built her whole story around the institutional failings of the Jedi. A young woman named Mae (Amandla Stenberg) is seeking revenge on a quartet of Jedi masters — the wise Sol (Lee Jung-jae), the stoic Indara (Carrie-Anne Moss), Wookiee master Kelnacca (Joonas Suotamo), and young Torbin (Dean-Charles Chapman) — for a family tragedy. And the more we learn about the history, the clearer it becomes that Jedi law — and questions of who is and isn’t allowed to study the Force — played an unfortunately huge role. Meanwhile, Mae’s twin sister Osha (Stenberg again) is working as a mechanic after washing out of Jedi training, and she has to again speak with her former teacher, Sol.

(*) Two of that show’s actors play Jedi here. Rebecca Henderson is Vernestra, a green-skinned, high-ranking member of the order. Charlie Barnett is Yord, a Jedi nerd with an unfortunate rooster haircut.

Lee Jung-jae, the Emmy-winning star of Squid Game, isn’t fluent in English, and as a result his line readings can be halting at times. But he otherwise brings a necessary amount of gravitas, warmth, and regret as Sol. His relationship with Osha is easily the best and most fully-realized aspect of The Acolyte. Stenberg, Headland, and their collaborators regrettably struggle to differentiate Osha and Mae from one another, even when they’re wearing different clothes and pursuing different agendas. (It’s even worse in the third episode, a listless flashback where the two girls, played by Leah and Lauren Brady, are styled identically.)

Most of the pieces are uneven at best, if not simply underwhelming. Carrie-Anne Moss is used well in an opening action set piece (once again getting to work with bullet-time effects, 25 years after the first Matrix) but is otherwise wasted, and the later fight scenes aren’t as dynamic. There are some amusing bits of business regarding interpersonal dynamics among the Jedi — Yord is so disrespected that even Sol’s padawan, Jecki (Dafne Keen, from Logan and His Dark Materials), feels comfortable acting superior to him — but not a lot.

In a major ruling, the Supreme Court on Friday cut back sharply on the power of federal agencies to interpret the laws they administer and ruled that courts should rely on their own interpretion of ambiguous laws. The decision will likely have far-reaching effects across the country, from environmental regulation to healthcare costs.

By a vote of 6-3, the justices overruled their landmark 1984 decision in Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council, which gave rise to the doctrine known as the Chevron doctrine. Under that doctrine, if Congress has not directly addressed the question at the center of a dispute, a court was required to uphold the agency’s interpretation of the statute as long as it was reasonable. But in a 35-page ruling by Chief Justice John Roberts, the justices rejected that doctrine, calling it “fundamentally misguided.”

Justice Elena Kagan dissented, in an opinion joined by Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson. Kagan predicted that Friday’s ruling “will cause a massive shock to the legal system.”

When the Supreme Court first issued its decision in the Chevron case more than 40 years ago, the decision was not necessarily regarded as a particularly consequential one. But in the years since then, it became one of the most important rulings on federal administrative law, cited by federal courts more than 18,000 times.

Although the Chevron decision – which upheld the Reagan-era Environmental Protection Agency’s interpretation of the Clean Air Act that eased regulation of emissions – was generally hailed by conservatives at the time, the ruling eventually became a target for those seeking to curtail the administrative state, who argued that courts, rather than federal agencies, should say what the law means. The justices had rebuffed earlier requests (including by one of the same lawyers who argued one of the cases here) to consider overruling Chevron before they agreed last year to take up a pair of challenges to a rule issued by the National Marine Fisheries Service. The agency had required the herring industry to pay for the costs, estimated at $710 per day, associated with carrying observers on board their vessels to collect data about their catches and monitor for overfishing.

The agency stopped the monitoring in 2023 because of a lack of funding. While the program was in effect, the agency reimbursed fishermen for the costs of the observers.

After two federal courts of appeals rebuffed challenges to the rules, two sets of commercial fishing companies came to the Supreme Court, asking the justices to weigh in.

The justices took up their appeals, agreeing to address only the Chevron question in Relentless v. Department of Commerce and Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo. (Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented in the Relentless case but was recused from the Loper-Bright case, presumably because she had heard oral argument in the case while she was still a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.)

Chevron deference, Roberts explained in his opinion for the court on Friday, is inconsistent with the Administrative Procedure Act, a federal law that sets out the procedures that federal agencies must follow as well as instructions for courts to review actions by those agencies. (1)The gravity of the violation.(2)The potential harm to the public.(3)The danger to the animal or other animals.(4)The potential adverse effect(s) on animals or people.(5)The previous violations.(6)The deterrent effect for future violations or violators.(c)ACPS may, from time to time, convene a temporary, issue-specific advisory committee of a cross-section of the community to review and recommend changes to the minimum fine and fee schedules to the Council. The Chief of ACPS may remove any member at any time for any reason within his/her discretion. The committee will be disbanded following the recommendation to the Chief of ACPS; a new committee will be seated for future review. The Chief of ACPS will review such recommendations and proceed as appropriate with suggesting the applicable changes as needed.(d)A person who has committed a civil infraction, but does not contest the citation and pays the infraction in a timely manner, shall be assessed an uncontested fine amount as established by ACPS in Chapter 462, Part 18.(e)Progressive penalties will be assessed as noted in Chapter 462, Part 18 and incorporated herein by this reference, and as may be attended from time to time.(f)Any person shall be guilty of a class D offense (as defined in Section 632.101) who:(1)Willfully refuses to sign and accept a citation issued by an animal control officer.(2)Willfully fails to appear in court; or(3)Fails to show cause.(g)A $5 surcharge shall be charged and collected upon each civil fine imposed for each violation of this Chapter, as authorized by F.S. § 828.27(4)(b). If the court adjudicates the violation as suspended or guilty with no fine, the surcharge shall still be charged and collected upon that violation, even if court costs are not assessed. The proceeds from such surcharge shall be deposited in the Animal Care and Protective Services Training and Cruelty Prevention Trust Fund
