In the year 1346 a Mongol Golden Horde army attacked and besieged the Venetian colony city of Feodosia in modern-day Crimea. While besieging the city many of the Mongol soldiers fell ill and died from an unknown illness. The Mongols then decided to then catapult the corpses into the city hoping that the unknown illness would spread to the Venetians. At some point through merchant ships the illness reached Central Europe. March 12 (Reuters) - Right-wing activist and Idaho gubernatorial candidate Ammon Bundy was arrested on Saturday on a trespassing charge for refusing to leave a hospital where an infant was taken into protective custody from his parents in a child-welfare case, police said.
Bundy's campaign said on Twitter that he had gone to the hospital in Meridian, Idaho, about 10 miles (15 km) west of the state capital Boise, in support of a family whose baby boy "had been medically kidnapped."
The campaign tweet said Bundy was arrested "for the crime of disagreeing with the hospital and CPS (child protective services)," adding, "this was an ambush arrest with no legal grounds."
Bundy and members of his family have become widely known for leading armed standoffs against federal authorities, most notably in a 41-day takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon in 2016 that left one of the occupiers dead.
Bundy, a brother and others were later acquitted of federal conspiracy charges stemming from the Malheur siege.
In a personal tweet, Bundy, 46, described the child as the grandson of a close friend, and said authorities took the baby because "a medical practitioner called CPS for a missed doctor appointment."
"If this happened to them, it could happen to you," Bundy wrote. "We must stand against this medical tyranny."
Police said the 10-month-old child was first hospitalized on March 1 after medical personnel determined the baby was severely malnourished. The infant was released to his parents a few days later after gaining sufficient weight, police said.
But a subsequent checkup found the child again had lost significant weight, and police were contacted when the parents canceled their follow-up appointment and could not be located, the Meridian police department said in a statement.
Advised that the child's condition was life-threatening, police sought to contact the parents, but the family proved uncooperative and evaded further attempts to check on the child's well-being, police said.
After a warrant was obtained, police located the father and child in a traffic stop, took the infant into custody and brought the baby to the hospital for additional medical care.
Bundy was arrested on a misdemeanor trespassing count after he and several followers showed up at the hospital "and refused to leave the property when asked to do so," police said.
A woman accused of interfering was also arrested, as were two other adults charged with interfering with police at the scene of the traffic stop, according to police.
Bundy, who has led a number of protests against COVID-19 public health restrictions in Idaho, announced his bid for the Republican nomination for governor in June.

As an unmarried female Ph.D. student, concerns and questions about my love life are unavoidable. Annoying as they are — I’m just 25 years old — I see my education as a privilege, rather than a burden.
Not everyone agrees. There is still a stigma attached to being a single, highly educated woman in China, 14 years after the Ministry of Education first formally adopted the popular buzzword “leftover women” to refer to our supposed plight. Just last month, for example, an expert suggested governments in rural areas sign local unmarried men up for skills trainings and then “export” them to cities where they could pair up with leftover women.
My own mother, when I first told her that I wanted to pursue a doctorate, responded angrily: “You would be better off just marrying someone than applying for a useless Ph.D. in sociology.” Enticed by the prospect of my one day becoming a university professor, she ultimately did not stand in my way, but over the years, my relatives, my parents’ friends, and even their colleagues have all constantly nagged us, urging me to find a husband, or at least get a boyfriend.

“Asked to identify what Auschwitz is,” The Washington Post reported in 2018, “41 percent … could not come up with a correct response identifying it as a concentration camp or extermination camp.”

This sounds awful—until you discover what Americans know, or rather don’t know, about other things. According to a 2016 survey reported on by Voice of America, “Roughly 60 percent of college graduates couldn’t correctly name a requirement for the ratification of a constitutional amendment, and 40 percent didn’t know Congress has the constitutional authority to declare war. Not even half know that the Senate oversees presidential impeachments.” (Presumably, they’ve figured that one out since.)

When we move from college grads to all American adults, the results get even worse. 37 percent don’t know when Election Day occurs every four years.

Over half don’t know that Franklin D. Roosevelt spearheaded the New Deal. (This is setting aside the 18 percent in another survey who think it was composed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.) Over 60 percent of respondents do not know the term lengths for senators and members of the House of Representatives. In 2021, the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania found that nearly half of American adults could not name all three branches of government. The list goes on: Half of Americans don’t know that the Supreme Court can overrule the president on constitutional questions. 64 percent don’t know that the Thirteenth Amendment ended slavery.

Put in this context, what Americans know about the Holocaust is actually quite impressive. According to Pew’s 2020 study:
When asked to describe in their own words what the Holocaust was, more than eight-in-ten Americans mention the attempted annihilation of the Jewish people or other related topics, such as concentration or death camps, Hitler, or the Nazis. Seven-in-ten know that the Holocaust happened between 1930 and 1950. And close to two-thirds know that Nazi-created ghettos were parts of a city or town where Jews were forced to live.

In other words, Americans demonstrate greater literacy about the Holocaust—an event that happened to a tiny fraction of the world’s population on a completely different continent—than they do about their own country’s institutions and history. More Americans can identify Auschwitz than their own branches of government. Tellingly, Americans across the ideological spectrum regularly make and debate Holocaust analogies, because its story is one of the few touchstones they all share. Far from a failure, Holocaust education in America has been a triumph, piercing the veil of civic ignorance that obscures so many other subjects in the popular consciousness.
