RALEIGH, N.C. (CN) — North Carolina Representative Cecil Brockman resigned from his position as state lawmaker Friday, several weeks after he was charged with two counts of statutory rape of a 15-year-old and two counts of indecent liberties with a child.

The 41-year-old Democrat has faced bipartisan calls for his resignation since his chargeswere made public earlier in October. His legislative assistant confirmed his resignation to Courthouse News Friday. His term in office had been scheduled to end on Jan. 1, 2027.

House Democratic Leader Robert Reives said in a statement that he is glad Brockman voluntarily resigned.

“The allegations against him are serious and made it impossible for him to adequately represent his constituents,” Reives said. “I look forward to the Guilford County Democrats appointing his successor."

Speaker of the House Destin Hall formally announced Friday the creation of a bipartisan House committee to explore Brockman’s expulsion.

He told reporters earlier in the month that the committee would be intended to give Brockman an opportunity for due process and to be heard. The process was anticipated to take several months as lawmakers gather evidence and investigate the charges raised against him, before making a recommendation to the House regarding reprimand or expulsion.

Hall removed Brockman from all the House committees he was serving on Friday, pending the conclusion of the House’s investigation. Brockman, who was in his sixth term in the House, was previously a vice chairman for the K-12 education committee. He was first elected to the House in 2014.

The state House last executed the investigation process in 2009, when Representative Thomas Wright was removed for ethical misconduct over claims he mishandled campaign funds and charitable contributions. Prior to that, it had been almost 130 years since the General Assembly removed a member from office.

“Rep. Brockman’s decision to resign is the right thing to do for his constituents and for the North Carolina House of Representatives,” Hall said in a statement Friday. “His departure spares the House from a difficult expulsion process and brings closure to this troubling chapter.”

Brockman, who is currently being held at the High Point Detention Center, had his bond set at $1.05 million. His attorney has asked for his bond to be lowered to $100,000, which the state has opposed. He has appeared once virtually in Guilford District Court after his first appearance was delayed due to an undisclosed medical emergency.

Brockman was arrested after calling 911 and telling a dispatcher that he was looking for the 15-year-old, whom he identified as his friend. Prosecutors said the teen met him on a dating app and lived with him for a time near Atlanta, Georgia, before moving to an apartment in North Carolina earlier this year. Authorities have said they recovered 14 videos on the teen’s phone that include “certain acts” in which Brockman is identifiable.

Prosecutors say that Brockman committed a “lewd and lascivious act” on a 15-year-old on Aug. 15. They also claim that Brockman has made several attempts to contact the minor, including trying to locate them while they were in the hospital. Brockman has also tried to “use his status to gain information,” a magistrate said in an initial bond determination.

Brockman, who served for over a decade, occasionally voted with Republicans and was absent during important votes, spurring pushback from fellow Democrats.

He spoke out against his party in 2024, claiminghe was being “scapegoated” after being absent during a notable vote, warning that the same behavior pushed another Democrat, Representative Tricia Cotham, to switch parties in 2023. He narrowly won against his primary challenger in March 2024.

Despite his resignation, Brockman’s office will continue serving his constituents until his replacement is appointed, legislative assistant Drew Gibson said. Brockman is next scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

THE ongoing story of alleged corruption and foreign influence trading by the Biden family took a more sinister turn on Wednesday (AEST).

Speaking to the conservative American news outlet Newsmax, President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani said he had turned the hard drive reportedly left abandoned by Hunter Biden, son of Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden, at a Delaware repair shop over to state police due to contents which he said included inappropriate text messages and pictures of underage girls.

Mr Giuliani said there were “numerous” pictures which he described as being of underage girls.

He also said there were text messages from Hunter to Joe saying that he had been accused of speaking naked to a 14-year-old girl on Facetime.

The shocking news comes as Bevan Cooney, a former Hunter Biden business partner who is serving time for fraud charges, was moved from his federal cell after releasing 26,000 emails to the press.

Cooney says he was set up as the fall guy for the younger Biden’s alleged misdealings.

The laptop has rocked the presidential race as it appears to provide direct evidence of cash-for-influence schemes involving Hunter and countries such as Ukraine and China. Social media giants including Twitter and Facebook have attempted to censor reporting and sharing of stories about the hard drive on the grounds its contents cannot be substantiated and might be a “fake” set up by foreign actors, but the FBI and numerous government intelligence agencies have been unable to disprove its authenticity.

According to numerous reports out of the US, the FBI had been in possession of a copy of Hunter Biden’s hard drive since 2019 but neglected to act on it.

Meanwhile, one of the only polls to call 2016’s shock result correctly shows Mr Trump is rapidly gaining ground on his rival as he picks up last-minute independent voters — much as he did four years ago.

The gap between the two has closed to just 2.3 points, from 8.6 points a week ago.

I don't understand the contradiction in enjoying discussions on these topics. Ashkenazim are in a very fascinating place from a genetic standpoint. Not okay to investigate, and analyze, and possibly joke on occasion?

Fascinating is definitely a word for it. That's why we get it knocked into our heads to get genetic testing done before even considering reproducing so we don't pass on one of a dozen or so horrible conditions to our lucky offspring.

A witness who was just outside the Pennsylvania rally where a gunman apparently attempted to assassinate Donald Trump Saturday night said he tried to alert Secret Service agents to a rifle-wielding man he spotted “bear crawling” onto the roof of a nearby building before gunshots rang through the crowd.

“We’re pointing at the guy crawling up the roof,” the witness, identified only as Greg, told the BBC of the surreal moment. “We could clearly see him with a rifle.”

“I’m standing there pointing at him for two to three minutes,” he continued. “Secret Service is looking at us from the top of the barn, I’m pointing at the roof...and next thing you know, five shots rang out.”

Former president Trump was just minutes into his rally in Butler when around 10 popping sounds interrupted his speech, sending the crowd into chaos. The former president collapsed behind his podium, as red-capped supporters behind him screamed and tried to duck.

Secret Service agents immediately jumped onto the stage, hoisting up Trump, whose face was dripping with blood. He pumped his fist before agents helped him off stage and into his waiting motorcade.

Trump has since said he is “fine,” revealing in a graphic statement that he was “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.”

“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin,” he said.

The shooting left one spectator dead and another two critically injured. Law enforcement officials said that a Secret Service sniper killed the shooter, who was outside the security perimeter.

The shooting is being considered an assassination attempt, law enforcement said, and an investigation has been launched.

The FBI identified the gunman as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old resident of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

The witness, who was wearing a red Trump 2024 visor, told the BBC that it was “absolutely” clear the shooter — who he said was clad in “muted colors,” like “tan, tight clothing” — was killed.

“Secret Service blew his head off,” Greg said. “They crawled up on the roof, they had their guns pointed at him to make sure he was dead, he was dead. And that’s it. It was over.”

Others have come forward to share their harrowing accounts of the chaos. Another witness, an emergency room doctor, recalled how he sprung into action to try to save a shooting victim in the crowd.

“I heard the shots. I thought it was crackers to begin with,” the doctor, who had blood stains on his T-shirt, told a CBS News reporter.

Someone had been screaming “he was shot, he was shot” so the doctor rushed over. The spectator had been shot in the head, and the doctor said he could see “brain matter.”

“The guy had spun around was jammed between the benches and a head shot here,” the doctor explained.

He then performed CPR and chest compressions on the man.

“I was the only one that did it,” he told CBS News. “There’s a helicopter coming in to get him.”

Boston Globe reporter James Pindell said he noticed early on that Secret Service agents were pointing rifles at a spot away from the crowd. But it wasn’t until Trump was six minutes into his speech that there was a “loud popping noise.”

“When I looked up, the same agents were shooting in the same direction their guns had been pointed all along. I knew they were shooting because I could see smoke from their guns,” he wrote. “I had a clear view of the stage, but at that moment, I was typing up what Trump was saying. When I looked at the podium again, the agents appeared to have Trump on the ground, protecting him. Then other agents were on the stage.”

He said the crowd was in total “shock,” with most crouching down as they tried to take cover.

“After Trump had been escorted to his car and people sensed the rally was over and they were safe, the crowd turned on the media,” Pindell said. “The crowd was angry. Middle fingers were everywhere. They asked the press if they were happy and blamed the media. ‘You did this,’ they said to reporters.”

A century-old rail lift bridge that crosses the U.S.-Canada border near the cities of International Falls, Minnesota, and Fort Frances, Ontario, has collapsed, and it's unclear when the area will reopen to water traffic along the Rainy River.

No trains were involved, and no one was injured in Wednesday's collapse, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The cause is under investigation.

Some "biodegradable, non-toxic hydraulic oil" was released, but environmental crews have contained it and are working to recover the fluid, the Canadian National Railway said.

Crews have begun repairs to the structure, which was built in 1908. It's known as the Rainy River Rail Lift Bridge and the 5 Mile Bridge, and swings up to let traffic through on the river that forms the international border as it runs from Lake of the Woods to Rainy Lake.
