As part of a plot to destroy the United States, the original technology our nuclear facilities were designed to use was banned. This technology allowed nuclear fuel to be consumed completely by using it in two different types of reactors. As nuclear fuel is used, it’s characteristics change that require it to be used differently by a secondary reactor, so it can be put right back in the original reactor. If you can’t do this, you can only use nuclear fuel to about five percent spent and then it has to go into the fuel pool. The fuel pools were never designed to handle more than a few spent nuclear cores and now they have, on average, over 50 each. If we could have used the fuel as intended, all of our nuclear facilities would only have (up to) two cores each right now, and even if all power and control was lost there would be no fuel pool disaster. Now that the fuel pools are so heavily overloaded with thousands of tons of 95 percent un spent fuel, if anything at all goes wrong with them, they’ll make Fukushima look like a party favor.

As this documentary smugly rehashes the transphobia that made Miriam Rivera’s life hell – claiming it would never happen today – it becomes just as tawdry. Has TV learned nothing in the past 20 years?

It was, all in all, a moral quagmire of a TV format. In 2004, There’s Something About Miriam saw six men vie for the attention of Miriam Rivera, a 21-year-old Mexican model who unbeknown to them had a “secret”: she was transgender. Even before it aired, this British reality-dating show had whipped up a tabloid frenzy, fuelled by the news that the contestants who had wooed Rivera were mounting a legal challenge to stop the show from airing. Lawyers claimed their lack of informed consent equated to a conspiracy to commit sexual assault.

Miriam: Death of a Reality Star retells the story of this queasy moment in pop culture, while also delving into Rivera’s traumatic early life and suspicious death. Yet despite looking back disapprovingly, this three-part documentary attempts to have its cake (sanctimonious dismay) and eat it, too (milking exactly the same tawdry titillation as the original did). There’s Something About Miriam’s horrifying denouement – one of the men reacted violently to the news that Rivera was trans – is teased throughout, meaning the documentary is also powered by the promise of that reveal. (While the original series was removed from circulation by Sky, this documentary re-airs so much footage that it doubles as a worst-of clip show.) Later, it stages a superficial investigation into Rivera’s death. Reality TV was – and still is – grounded in exploitation.

From the start, Miriam: Death of a Reality Star struggles to tell a nuanced story. Woven through the account of the reality show’s chaotic production is a portrait of Rivera’s early life. From family and friends, we learn that she was subject to staggering transphobia at home (her father arranged an exorcism) and dropped out of school after her boyfriend discovered she was trans. Yet there was also joy: Rivera found solace in New York’s ballroom culture and was scouted to join Speed Angels, a UK-based trans pop band.

Speed Angels never took off, but it did lead Rivera to be cast in There’s Something About Miriam. At the time of broadcast, the public perception of trans people was mired in misunderstanding and mockery; this show was, according to its makers, an attempt to remedy that. Considering it was entirely predicated on the eventual shock and horror of the men involved, that argument doesn’t quite ring true.

This documentary doesn’t set out to villainise those men; the two contestants who take part, Toby and Aron, are clearly victims, too. But we get a cartoon baddie in the production executive Jo Juson. She comes across as unrepentant (“Do I think it went beyond any moral codes of conduct? No”) and displays so little empathy that airing her thoughts feels irresponsible.

Generally, however, we are invited to reflect smugly on how far we have come. Yes we can watch agog as shows such as Harry Hill’s TV Burp and Have I Got News for You make eye-watering jokes about Rivera, safe in the knowledge that they would never be told today. But this satisfaction is hollow. The exploitation at the heart of the reality genre remains steadfast: formats still rely heavily on hoaxes (most recently on Hot Mess Summer and The Underdog: Josh Must Win); it’s not hard to see why the former Channel 4 boss Michael Grade called contemporary TV “cruel” just this month. Meanwhile, the marginalisation of trans people in society is by no means a thing of the past.

That dangerous marginalisation comes to the fore in the final episode, as we are told of Rivera’s attempts to cash in on her celebrity through escort work. What happened next remains sketchy, but her last years were seemingly filled with unimaginable horror; there are suggestions of addiction, kidnap, sex trafficking and, ultimately, murder. Rivera’s death was officially ruled a suicide, but her mother and others close to her believe she was killed.

Blackrock CEO Larry Fink tells the World Economic Forum (WEF) that developed countries with shrinking populations will be better prepared for the social problems that come from “substituting humans for machines.”

Speaking at the WEF’s Special Meeting on Global Collaboration, Growth and Energy Development during a panel on “Investing Amid Global Fracture,” Fink said that there would be a divide between the “middle class developing countries that have a foundation and education” and developing countries that have booming populations but little education.

With that divide, Fink argued that developed countries with shrinking populations would be the “big winners” as far as quality of life is concerned because they will have all the technologies to boost productivity and elevate their living standards.

“I can argue in the developed countries the big winners are countries that have shrinking populations […] These countries will rapidly develop robotics and AI and technology […] The social problems that one will have in substituting humans for machines is going to be far easier in those countries that have declining populations”

“And if the promise, and it’s going to happen, if the promise of all of that transforms productivity, which most of us think it will, we’ll be able to elevate the standard of living of countries, the standard of living of individuals, even with shrinking populations.”

For Fink, fewer people means a better quality of life in the developed world thanks to automation.

For growing populations in the developing world, particularly in Africa, education will be key, according to the BlackRock CEO.

“The paradigm of negative population growth is going to be changing, and the social problems that one will have in substituting humans for machines is going to be far easier in those countries that have declining populations,” said Fink.

“For those countries that have rising populations, the answer will be education — for those countries that do not have a foundation of rule of law or education, that’s where the divide’s going to get more and more extreme,” he added.

The WEF’s Special Meeting on Global Collaboration, Growth and Energy Development took place from April 27-29 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

⁣Stephen Mitford Goodson died of a "heart attack" in 2018, but I'd like to think he'd approve of this narration. I've hated fractional reserve central banking since watching The Money Masters nearly 10 years ago, but this book took my hatred to new levels—especially because I'm of mostly German descent. I bought 10 copies to spread the word, but most people will listen to a 3 hour podcast before reading a single sentence in a book, so I decided to make this.

I own no rights to this book and will never try to make a single penny from it. At first, I just wanted a clean recording. Then I wanted to include the text...and the footnotes...and the images...and then I figured every slide should have an image...and soon this project consumed five months of my free time. When I couldn't find an image that represented a given slide, I tried to find a beautiful photo of that country's scenery or its currency, political cartoons from the era, or relevant images from my meme folder. When all else fails, you get the wall of text.

I'll be the first to admit that Stephen Mitford Goodson didn't get everything right (particularly nukes), but on balance, I believe his book is hugely important and needs to be understood by more people. Yes, this is dense, and arguably too fast. But I hope you, dear reader, investigate every single claim in this book for yourself. I hope you make some nutritious food (no seed oils!) while showing this to friends. I hope you become a beacon of remoralization for everyone in your circle. It's not going to be easy, but we ARE are going to make it.

Drag Queen Story Hour—in which performers in drag read books to kids in libraries, schools, and bookstores—has become a cultural flashpoint. The political Right has denounced these performances as sexual transgressions against children, while the political Left has defended them as an expression of LGBTQ pride. The intellectual debate has even spilled into real-world conflict: right-wing militants affiliated with the Proud Boys and the Three Percenters have staged protests against drag events for children, while their counterparts in the left-wing Antifa movement have responded with offers to serve as a protection force for the drag queens.

Families with children find themselves caught in the middle. Drag Queen Story Hour pitches itself as a family-friendly event to promote reading, tolerance, and inclusion. “In spaces like this,” the organization’s website reads, “kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where everyone can be their authentic selves.” But many parents, even if reluctant to say it publicly, have an instinctual distrust of adult men in women’s clothing dancing and exploring sexual themes with their children.

These concerns are justified. But to mount an effective opposition, one must first understand the sexual politics behind the glitter, sequins, and heels. This requires a working knowledge of an extensive history, from the origin of the first “queen of drag” in the late nineteenth century to the development of academic queer theory, which provides the intellectual foundation for the modern drag-for-kids movement.

The drag queen might appear as a comic figure, but he carries an utterly serious message: the deconstruction of sex, the reconstruction of child sexuality, and the subversion of middle-class family life. The ideology that drives this movement was born in the sex dungeons of San Francisco and incubated in the academy. It is now being transmitted, with official state support, in a number of public libraries and schools across the United States. By excavating the foundations of this ideology and sifting through the literature of its activists, parents and citizens can finally understand the new sexual politics and formulate a strategy for resisting it.

⁣CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (WPEC) — A man who was facing 83 charges on child molestation was found dead in his jail cell Monday morning.

The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office said 48-year-old James Palmucci was found by jail staff with fabric around his neck.

⁣Happy Pride Month, y'all! I got some spectacular news for you (yes, this is real news).

Los Angeles has officially removed these homophobic "U-turn" signs which were at one time used to promote the idea that gay people like to meet up with random strangers for sex.

Yeah, people used to think that! Can you believe it?

Nonetheless, progress has been made.

Gay people, you can now once again U-Turn in Silver Lake!!

Street signs that officials said previously targeted LGBTQ community members were taken down from a Silver Lake neighborhood Monday.

The signs that read ‘No Cruising' and prohibited U-turns were installed in 1997 when neighbors complained about gay men hanging out and looking for dates in certain residential areas close to popular gay bars.

While the ‘No Cruising' signs were removed after the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council voted to dismantle them in 2011, some of the no U-turn signs remained.

Yes, U-turn signs are homophobic because they at one point hindered gay men's ability to find a sex partner. But now these signs are a thing of the past, at least in Silver Lake.
