The term democracy was derived from Greek meaning "people rule" in the fifth century B.C. to denote political systems that existed in some Greek city-states like Athens. While a "pure" democracy includes all of its people making all of its decisions as a group, as a practical matter this will not work except in quite small groups.

Article IV, Section 4 of the United States Constitution says, "The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government," making it clear that this nation is a republic. However, we commonly hear it referred to as a democracy, and it seems possible, even likely that this was the intended response.

(We understand that some have objected to our selection of the United States as the likely answer to this question, and we accept that it is better classified as a republic, a representative democracy, or something similar. Limited or constitutional monarchy is a form of government in which a monarch acts as head of state within the guidelines of a constitution. The likely answer in 1912 would have been Great Britain.

In an absolute monarchy, the monarch wields unrestricted political power over the sovereign state and its people. Until 1905 the Tsars of Russia governed as absolute monarchs. Another possible example might have been Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and Prussia.

A republic is a government where the head of state is not a monarch. Leadership positions are directly or indirectly elected or appointed rather than inherited. In 1912 an example might have been the Republic of France or even the United States of America.

An undercover sting video released today shows Dr. Deborah Nucatola, Planned Parenthood’s senior director of medical services, discussing their practices and processes for obtaining medical specimens from aborted fetuses.

In the video, Dr. Nucatola calmly explains, while eating lunch, how a physician might manage an abortion procedure to maximize the opportunity to recover particularly desirable fetal tissue. For example, she says, “We’ve been very good at getting heart, lung, liver, because we know that, so I’m not gonna crush that part, I’m gonna basically crush below, I’m gonna crush above, and I’m gonna see if I can get it all intact.”

Currently the video is being covered primarily in the politically conservative press and among pro-life activist groups and sites, though the Washington Post has picked up on the story as well. One wonders, as America’s Kevin Clarke did with the Kermit Gosnell case in 2013, how thoroughly this news will be analyzed and discussed in mainstream media.

The video was released by the Center for Medical Progress, an organization which describes itself as “a group of citizen journalists dedicated to monitoring and reporting on medical ethics and advances”; founded in 2013, they appear to be making their debut with this video. Planned Parenthood has criticized the video in a press release as “a heavily edited, secretly recorded videotape that falsely portrays Planned Parenthood’s participation in tissue donation programs.” Earlier similar undercover videos of Planned Parenthood employees released by Live Action, for which C.M.P.’s founder David Daleiden worked, have been criticized for selective editing that may have eliminated important context. After watching the video, however, it is difficult to imagine what context could possibly rescue Dr. Nucatola’s statements. (The full unedited video, which is almost three hours long, has also been posted on the same YouTube channel as the version discussed here.)

While the video describes what is happening as the “sale” of body parts and claims that this violates federal law, Planned Parenthood’s vice president of communications, Eric Ferrero, claims that no such sale actually occurs: “There is no financial benefit for tissue donation for either the patient or for Planned Parenthood. In some instances, actual costs, such as the cost to transport tissue to leading research centers, are reimbursed, which is standard across the medical field.”

Whether or not these practices violate federal laws regulating the sale of human tissue or prohibiting partial-birth abortion—and whether one is pro-life or pro-choice—what is described by Dr. Nucatola is indefensible. The issue is not only that fetal tissue is being procured from abortions, but that some of the medical details of the abortions themselves are being arranged in order to serve the purpose of supplying particular body parts of unborn children. Even if all the money changing hands is only reimbursing actual costs, as Planned Parenthood claims, these abortions are no longer purely about reproductive choice, but have become means to a larger and grislier end.

The implicit logic is, from a certain horrible perspective, consistent: if the fetus is going to be dismembered anyway, why not dismember it so as to make it as useful as possible for the presumably good ends of medical research? But most of us will quail before such consistency; most of us will pause, at least momentarily, at the thought that the destruction of a human body is being planned so carefully to use its parts for any goal whatsoever.

Even those who defend abortion as a necessary component of reproductive freedom should be horrified by the dispassionate discussion of how best to extract a fetus so that the head might be recovered intact:

And with the calvarium [braincase of the skull], in general, some people will actually try to change the presentation so that it’s not vertex, because when it’s vertex presentation, you never have enough dilation at the beginning of the case, unless you have real, huge amount of dilation to deliver an intact calvarium. So if you do it starting from the breech presentation, there’s dilation that happens as the case goes on, and often, the last, you can evacuate an intact calvarium at the end.

⁣“You can evacuate an intact calvarium,” which is to say, a physician can remove an unborn child’s head without having to crush it first. The common etymological ancestry with Calvary, the Place of the Skull where the Romans had their own detailed procedures for reducing a body to death, seems less than accidental today.

Democratic strategist Neera Tanden and Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) mixed it up on Monday’s CNN NewsNight. Tanden accused the lawmaker of not voting for a bill in Congress that came to the floor before he took office.

The panel discussed the Trump administration’s reported plans to encourage Americans to have more children. According to a New York Times report, these potentially include reserve Fulbright scholarships for people who are married or have kids, a $5,000 “baby bonus” per child per mother, and funding programs that educate women on their menstrual cycles.

“I support child care,” Tanden said. “I support the child care tax credit. I support the child tax credit. A lot of Republicans have voted against the child tax credit.”

Tanden did say she finds it “a little weird for the government” to take an interest in women’s menstrual cycles.

“And I think if a Democratic administration would do something like that, we’d hear a lot of complaints about it,” she added. “But, you know, I totally agree that we should do a lot more as an administration to support families. And one way to do that is child care. Another way to do that is paid leave. And I think it’s unfortunate that conservatives, Republicans have voted against those very ideas in Congress.”

She went on to add that the child tax credit was opposed by every Republican, including Lawler. That got the lawmaker’s attention, which led to this exchange:

LAWLER: Actually, not. But nice try.

TANDEN: You voted against the reconciliation bill that had actual child care in it. You did. And the child tax credit.

LAWLER: When did I vote against that? When did I vote against that?

TANDEN: You voted against it back, way back in 2022.

LAWLER: I wasn’t elected until ’22. So, I didn’t come to Congress until ’23. But thank you. So, you apologize for lying?

TANDEN: I’m sorry.

LAWLER: Thank you.

TANDEN: I’m not lying.

LAWLER: You did lie.

TANDEN: Every Republican–

A Miami school has discouraged teachers from getting the Covid vaccine, saying any vaccinated employees will be barred from interacting with students.

Centner Academy leadership cited debunked claims of non-vaccinated people being "negatively impacted" by contact with vaccinated people.

The Centner Academy, a fee-paying school, is located in Miami's Design District. Annual tuition begins at $15,160 (£10,898) for pre-school students and goes up to nearly $30,000 for middle school students, who are around 13-15 years old.

Co-founder Leila Centner informed parents on Monday that, when possible, the academy's policy is to not employ anyone who has received a Covid-19 vaccine at this time, CBS Miami reported.

In a letter last week to staff, first reported by the New York Times, Mrs Centner said teachers must notify the school if they had already received the jab.

"We cannot allow recently vaccinated people to be near our students until more information is known," Mrs Centner wrote.

Teachers who wait to get vaccinated after the school year ends will be allowed to return only when clinical trials on the vaccine are completed, assuming a position at the school is still available.

Mrs Centner also repeated a false claim of vaccinated individuals affecting unvaccinated people, saying three women in the school's community had their menstrual cycles "impacted after having spent time with a vaccinated person".

There is no scientific evidence for these claims. None of the coronavirus vaccines approved for emergency in the US have been linked to infertility, miscarriages or any other negative changes to women's reproductive health.

Mrs Centner and her husband David Centner have described themselves as "health freedom advocates", providing guidance for parents at the Centner Academy to file for exemptions from vaccine requirements in the past.

Mrs Centner has frequently shared anti-vaccine content on Facebook, according to the Times.

In a response to questions from US media, a representative for Mrs Centner said that the school was not "100 percent sure that Covid injections are safe and there are too many unknown variables for us to feel comfortable at this current time".

The United Teachers of Dade, a local not-for-profit teachers group, said in a statement to CBS News: "We are horrified by the unsafe conditions and labour violations that colleagues at schools such as this one have to endure due to lack of union representation and contract rights."
