Someone has to say it: most of these quarantine jokes are unfunny.

Perhaps I’m being too harsh. I admit, I chuckled at the pictures of toilets smoking “cigars” and tittered at Twitter threads investigating whether New York governor Andrew Cuomo has pierced nipples. But in the age of the short attention span, the bite-sized amusement usurps the well-earned belly laugh. If I really wanted to laugh until my ribs hurt — and given the news, God do I ever — I need something a little more long-winded. Something a little more inspired. I think it’s time to bring back “The Aristocrats.”

Johnny Carson’s favorite joke, the dirtiest joke ever told, the world’s funniest; if you’re uninitiated with the famous joke, feel free to take ten and go immerse yourself in it (I’d recommend Bob Saget’s telling, but only if you’re in a private room without anyone nearby who might drop dead from disgust or shock). If you’ve just returned from Saget’s telling, I’ll either assume you, like me, found it uproariously funny, or you, unlike me, hated every second of it and are curious to know how I might justify consuming such depravity in the midst of a global pandemic. All in good time.

Explaining “The Aristocrats,” like explaining any joke, somewhat dampens its comedic genius. On paper, the joke is quite simple. Any telling of “The Aristocrats,” a joke which originated on burlesque and vaudeville stages in the early 20th century, contains the same setup: A family walks into a talent agency, and the talent agent asks them to present their act. Upon finishing the act, the talent agent asks what the family calls itself, to which they proudly answer “The Aristocrats!”

So what is their act? Shit-flinging, piss-drinking, corpse-fucking, dog-milking: you name it and this fictional family has likely done it. The challenge for the comedian telling “The Aristocrats” is to stuff the middle section between setup and punchline with inventive permutations of basic scatalogical elements, acts which the talent family perform with solemn duty. The joke is an exercise in improvisation as much as obscenity. Comedians from Phyllis Diller to Whoopi Goldberg have accepted this challenge for decades, and the infamous joke even spawned a 2005 documentary which featured dozens of comedians discussing their spins on the bit. Nothing is off the table in “The Aristocrats” — for the joke to remain funny over so many retellings, it has demanded comedians to incorporate the taboos of their time to concoct the most vile scenarios possible for this ill-fated talent family.

Transgressive humor such as “The Aristocrats” redefines the term “guilty pleasure,” making anyone who laughs an accomplice in provocation. In doing so, it can radically connect us with the darkest parts of our own subconscious. We “shouldn’t” be laughing at a family who fucks their own dog and eats their own poop in front of a talent agent, but audiences do. When it is used not for pure shock value but in the service of true comedy, transgressive humor can be a real way of coping with and moving past feelings of repressed fear and anger. “The Last Laugh,” a 2016 documentary by Ferne Pearlstein, explores how Jewish comedians have coped with the lingering horror of the Holocaust through jokes, from “gallows humor” made inside concentration camps to Mel Brooks’ film “The Producers,” which famously revolves around the fictional musical “Springtime for Hitler: A Gay Romp With Adolf and Eva at Berchtesgaden.” “There is nothing funny about the Holocaust,” says actor Rob Reiner, one of the talking heads in the film, “But to survive — there can be humor in that.”

The best transgressive humor thus comes from a comedian’s ability to look something terrifying in the eye — whether it be anti-Semitism, terrorism, white supremacy or homophobia — and strip away its power by making it funny. Of course, this takes time — hence the old formulation “Tragedy + Time = Comedy” — and a sensitivity on the part of the comedian about their own background and how their joke may be inferred. But what happens when “something terrifying” is not a past occurrence (like the Holocaust or 9/11, two tragic events joked about in taboo humor) but the ongoing restructuring of life as we know it? Whether a joke about the COVID-19 pandemic is made “too soon” is no longer a question we can reasonably ask.

In a piece about quarantine comedy in The Atlantic, writer Megan Garber argues that the silliness of quarantine comedy — the parodies and memes and TikToks — exists outside of time, irrelevant to the pandemic. In presenting a radical and intentional escapism, Garner writes that “silliness begins to read as especially meaningful—and especially radical… Quarantine comedy reacts to [the uncertainty of the moment] with a nihilism that is entirely reasonable. It lives in the moment. Many of the best quarantine jokes, their actions looped, their moods loopy, come from a place of boredom—and that is generally preferable, they implicitly acknowledge, to a place of grief… Their humor—silly, small, lo-fi, low-stakes—has a humanism to it.”

The silliness of these videos, however, can sometimes feel disturbingly estranged from what’s going on outside of the internet. As Garber notes, these videos perform a simple function: creating content provides cheerful distraction for holed-up humorists, and watching content provides cheerful distraction for cooped-up consumers. That escapist humor helps us cope with traumatic events is indisputable. But I’d like to believe escapist humor has a potential beyond reactionary memes or videos, a potential to stand alone as would a great work of literature or art. For true catharsis, we must articulate a version of escapist humor not nihilist but life-affirming. And I believe — as strange as it sounds to say — that life-affirming humor can be found in pure and utter filth.

A few weeks after the attacks on 9/11, in a show-must-go-on moment, New York City’s comedians gathered to roast (of all people!) Hugh Hefner. By the time Gilbert Gottfried, the last comic of the night stepped onstage, it seemed the half-hearted offerings of the earlier celebrity comedians would not be able to overcome the pall that had settled over the city since the attacks — the fact that Gotffried made a joke about the Twin Towers early in the set certainly did not help. But then something incredible happened. Gottfried, in his shrill voice, intoned: A family walks into a talent agency. And by the time Gottfried had put the talent family through hell and back to arrive at the crowning line — “The Aristocrats!” — New York had howled of laughter again, in spite of its immeasurable grief.

The writer Frank Rich, in a column describing what it was like to witness Gotffried’s telling, writes that the joke “jolted us back into the land of the living again.” The fact that such filthy material could restore an audience to vitality may seem surprising, until you consider that “The Aristocrats” is fundamentally a joke entirely about living, in its most base forms. Life, most of the time, is not glamorous: it is shit and piss and pus and blood and cum. During a tragedy, it’s both crucial and comforting to be reminded of our ugly humanity in this way. We so often present ourselves as “Aristocrats,” putting up fronts to deny our bodies and the mortality inherent in them. But bodily secretions are the functions of a living person, not a dead one. In the subtlest of ways, filthy jokes address fears of death and grief about the death that surrounds us in a way that parodies or TikToks cannot. Even if you’re covered in shit, a filthy joke says, you’re lucky to be alive. Scatological humor is thus not just shocking or gross — it radically laughs in the face of death by dealing purely with life.

It’s why 14th century peasants living through the Black Plague laughed at poems with titles like “The Knight Who Made Cunts Talk,” “The Mourner Who Got Fucked at the Grave Site,” and “The Peasant’s Fart” (all literal translations). It’s why, at four in the morning on FaceTime with a friend who is quarantining an ocean away from me now, tears of laughter rolled down my face while he described in detail the time he fought back diarrhea while sitting in traffic on a busy highway. Many among us who have lost a loved one to coronavirus or are struggling with personal issues brought on by the pandemic may not feel able to laugh just yet, at anything. But when we are able to laugh again, we might give ourselves permission to shock ourselves, both with what we find funny and how much we laugh. For if shit and piss isn’t the essence of life, finding shock and delight in the most unexpected of places just might be.

THEY SAY HISTORY is written by it’s victors. And this might be true…to a degree. But how much established history should we throw out, simply because it’s based on institutionalized academia? In this episode, Basil and Gonz have a discussion with Karen Hudes and Dr. Ed Spencer not only about the hidden hand that guides the world’s banking systems, but also their conviction that our established history has been covering up the existence of a race of large brained hominids termed, Homo Capensis. According to Hudes and Dr. Spencer, humanity is and has been under attack by these large brain hominids who openly ruled the world during the Ice Age and strive to openly dominate the world again, crushing Homo sapiens into a small population controlled by electronic brain manipulation run by supercomputers.
During the conversation, Basil and Gonz do not press on the many issues that Hudes and Dr. Spencer bring up as part of their supporting evidence for this worldview. However, on this post, we will provide some counter positions so that you can decide for yourself where the truth may lie. First we will look at a list of points made in favor of the Homo Capensis existing, followed by the counter arguments made for each with links and resources so that you can come to your own conclusions.
PRO Homo Capensis
The following is a list of arguments made by Dr. Ed Spencer that he believes serve as data points to support the theory of Homo Capensis.
1-The world was mapped in the Ice Age. They were highly advanced even knowing spherical trigonometry. They must have been the Homo Capensis.
2-Cone Head skulls found all around the world suggest that there is another humanoid race on earth. Brien Forester’s preliminary DNA work shows that they are not human.
3-Megalithic structures build all around the world must have been built by the Homo Capensis.
4-Ruins in South Africa were probably prison cells for humans kept in check by the Homo Capensis who enslaved us. “We’re their pets…” as Dr. Ed Spencer puts it.
5-The brain cavity of a Homo Capensis is 30% larger than the average human, making their IQ much higher. This is based on the Boskop skulls found in the early 1900’s, commentary on those findings by R. Broom (who Dr. Spencer feels has been deliberately covered up) and a recent book written by Lynch and Granger called Big Brain.
6-Andrew Lobaczewski in his Book: Political Ponerology, A science of the study of Evil Adjusted for Political Purposes, reviews the strange mental states of so many of our leaders, thus providing evidence that our leaders are influenced by the Homo Capensis.
7-The UFO-ET story is a cover up to veil the truth about the Big Brain Hominids, who can be classified as Crypto-terrestrials.
8-Akhenaten, an ancient Egyptian Pharaoh is Abraham or Moses, leading to the theory that the cover up of Homo Capensis began back in the days of ancient Israel and that the ancient fathers of Israel may have been Homo Capensis themselves. Such a theory is further considered based on the writings of Eustace Mullins, Andrew Carrington Hitchcock, and others to suggest that the same coverup continues today.
9-Thus the Bible is not true and cannot be trusted.

b.) The word “rapture” was added to the Bible.

Counter Arguments for Homo Capensis Evidence
1-THE ICE AGE
According to Dr. Ed Spencer, the entire earth was mapped during the Ice Age when sea level was approximately 400 ft. lower and there was no Ice over the Queen Maud Land Coast of Antarctica. The mysterious civilization that did this knew spherical trigonometry. One piece of evidence that he bring up is author Charles Hapgood who wrote the book, Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings: Evidence of an Advanced Civilization in the Ice Age.
Counter Argument: According to many who are critical of the work of Hapgood, the research done was shoddy and didn’t take into account alternative information regarding the maps that were investigated. They suggest that the maps aren’t as accurate as Hapgood makes it out to be and that they depend largely on the assumption that different portions of each map examined came from an earlier map, and that there were errors during the copying process. Hapgood also ignores the countless maps made by native americans who explored the arctic. While the speculations made are interesting, there is a reason why much of his research has been dismissed by orthodox science, and it’s not necessarily because of a coverup. Even if it were true that there was a highly advanced civilization during the Ice Age it could be pointing to an antediluvian culture described in the Bible and not necessarily that of Homo Capensis.

2-CONE HEAD SKULLS
It is true that there are strange skulls that have been found all around the world. Some of these skulls are in the shape of cone heads. According to our colleague and friend LA Marzulli, these skulls are evidence for Nephilim providing evidence that there are beings here on earth that were bred from the unholy union of fallen angels and human women. While Karen Hudes refuted this in the conversation when she said that this was impossible because the DNA did not match, it begs the questions; where did she get the DNA information and how does she know this?

3-MEGALITHIC STRUCTURES AROUND THE WORLD
Similar to the Cone Heads, LA Marzulli has given his theory as to how these structures were created. It is obvious that the topic of megalithic structures is a fascinating one filled with speculation. While no one can say for sure who made them, the theory put forth by LA Marzulli is that it was the Nephilim. The Ancient Aliens camp suggests it’s the aliens who built all the megalithic structures, and Dr. Spencer is putting forth the theory that it was the Homo Capensis. But what the reality is far more mundane?
In the work of Chris White in his film Ancient Aliens Debunked, counter arguments are put forth against the Ancient Aliens theory of these megalithic structures. He demonstrates that there doesn’t necessarily need to be advanced alien technologies, nor giants to construct some of these structures. In the same way, it would suffice to say that these structures don’t necessarily need Homo Capensis in order for construction either.
4-RUINS IN SOUTH AFRICA

Again, while the prospect is interesting, there is no concrete evidence that these stone structures are anything out of the ordinary. While the website argue that there are astronomical alignments with some of the stones that were placed here, again this doesn’t necessarily serve any evidence to suggest that the Homo Capensis are responsible agents for such construction. In fact, the link provided suggests that it was the aliens who genetically engineered us, based largely on a liberal rendering of the Ancient Sumerian cosmologies. So where or why this necessarily has to be Homo Capensis is again not addressed by Dr. Ed Spencer in the conversation, and should serve as at least a point of skepticism that such explanations are valid.
5-BRAIN CAVITY OF HOMO CAPENSIS
According to Dr. Ed Spencer, these Homo Capensis had large brain cavities that allowed for larger brains and thus higher IQ. The speculation was drawn from a book called Big Brain by Professors Gary Lynch and Richard Granger. While the proposition is made based on a skull found in Africa called the Boskop skull, modern scholars are skeptical of Lynch and Granger. For example, paleoanthropologist John Hawkes stated this about the book:
““I hate to think that the theme of a 2008 book was pulled straight from a 1958 essay, but I don’t know where else they would have gotten the idea. No anthropologists have written much about the so-called “Boskopoids” since 1958. There is no such thing as an “IQ estimate” for a fossil human; that’s entirely nonsensical. There’s no question that there have been massive cultural changes in the last 10,000 years. But the idea that our brains’ functions have atrophied from some Pleistocene state has been left long behind in the dust of nineteenth-century race studies. So I’m left wondering: Why would two neuroscientists, after going to all the trouble to write a book about the evolution of the human brain, use completely obsolete anthropological information without doing a simple Google search to see if the facts have stayed the same as in 1923?”
Furthermore, we enquired our friend and colleague archeologist, Dr. Aaron Judkins about the Boskop skull and here is what he had to say:
“So called Boskop Man was not a new species, but a variation of modern humans. The original skull was incomplete raising major questions about the quality and interpretation of the finds.”

6-POLITICAL PONEROLOGY
According to Dr. Ed Spencer, a study from a book by Andrew Lobaczewski called Political Ponerology: A science of the study of Evil Adjusted for Political Purposes, shows that in fact, the leaders and elite of humanity are clinically insane. While we agree with this premise, the study has some interesting history, as well as conjectures that is worth a second look.
First off, the document plays off the “it’s been suppressed” dogma based on some historical factors. Mainly that the original research was burned during a raid in Poland. They claim that the second copy which was reconstructed under “impossible conditions of violence and repression” was sent to the Vatican without hearing anything in return. The third copy, which is what we now have, was re-written from memory by one of the original researchers Lobasczewski (the last survivor of the research), but was blocked by Zbigniew Brzezinski for publication.
While there is no hard evidence that any of this is true, it makes one wonder why there was only one copy to begin with, but also why even after the first reconstruction, they would send the one and only copy to the Vatican? And then furthermore, even if it were suppressed for publication by Zbigniew Brzezinski, why would they want his stamp of approval for it? Wouldn’t it make much more sense to simply publish the material? Not to mention the work seems to have been reconstructed from memory.
The content itself is also strife with logical inconsistencies. While the claim of the author is to provide an explanation for evil without any supernatural leanings, it makes the assumption that “evil” itself is real and true without any objective point of reference. Without this reference, such a thing as evil would merely be a subjective phenomenon making it simply something that would support the Darwinian evolution paradigm of “survival of the fittest.”
Furthermore, even given that evil is real and that such things do occur, there is nothing substantially groundbreaking about the research. It seems to state the obvious such as emotions and environmental conditions influence an individual to commit evil acts. By avoiding any supernatural or even metaphysical agencies or realities as part of the realm of possibility to explain evil, this study was probably not suppressed, but merely dismissed on appropriate grounds that it doesn’t provide sufficient argument for evil. Not to mention, even if the world’s leaders are not psychopathic, why would anyone allow the publication of a work that would jeopardize their political and social influence? It would seem less of a coverup and more of a rational act to protect one’s public perception of character. And if they truly were psychopathic, why would they care if it was publicly known?
And lastly, how does this study in any way shape or form support the premise that the Homo Capensis is behind it? Rather, a more accurate explanation could be stated in that there is sin in the world and that every man is infected with it.

7-UFO-ET PHENOMENON IS A COVERUP FOR HOMO CAPENSIS
On page 76 of a letter written by R. Broom states this about the Boskop skull mentioned earlier:
“But fortunately it is unlikely that any one will, after Elliot Smith’s report on the brain cast, maintain that the large brain of the Boskop skull is pathological and there seems to remain but one conclusion, namely, that in South Africa in very early times there lived a race of primitive man characterized by having a large skull with very thick parietal bosses, a brain of great size and a powerful jaw with incisors and canines much larger than those in modern man. For this type of which we at present only know the one specimen, I propose the name Homo capensis, regarding it as sufficiently distinct from Homo sapiens to be worthy of specific rank.”
The remark was made back in 1918 and has been largely dismissed as a misdiagnosis, largely because they were only working from fractions of the skull. The suggestion of the fringe community is that such a skull is evidence for ET and UFOs. While this is possible, one would have to dismiss all of the evidence and speculation drawn from the entirety of the Ufological community. In similar fashion to the Ancient Astronaut theory, it would have to be said that every strange anomaly or unexplained phenomena is attributed to Homo Capensis. Again, while one should leave such possibilities open, to suggest it as fact without any sort of hard evidence would be taking a leap of faith.
8-AKHENATEN WAS ABRAHAM/MOSES
When we first asked Karen Hudes how this entire banking system ties into the topic of Homo Capensis, her response was that Akhenaten, an ancient Egyptian Pharaoh, was in fact Abraham of the Bible. Without any obvious logical connection, it would have to be assumed that what she meant was that the Old Testament account was the start of a great coverup for the existence of the Homo Capensis, and that Abraham was not human, or a prophet of God, but rather a Homo Capensis himself.
To begin, the theory of Akhenaten being one of the Biblical characters is nothing new. The speculation has led from the Pharaoh being Abraham, Joseph, and even Moses. The speculation arises mostly from the idea that since Akhenaten seems to be the first monotheistic pharaoh, it follows that the Biblical character of either Abraham, Moses, or Joseph, who touted monotheism, is the same person. For example, an article called Akhenaten: The First String of Monotheism, outright states that such a notion is “…pure speculation to fill the gaps…” even admitting that while there is a written history of the ancient Hebrews, there isn’t evidence outside of the Bible, and therefore the theory can remain a possibility.
But perhaps the most popular account of such a speculation is by a gentlemen named Ahmed Osmon who suggested that Akhenaten was Moses from the Biblical account. While he makes his case in several books, these accounts have not been taken seriously at the academic level, mainly because of his sloppy and inconsistent approach to the evidence. Some of it seems to be outright wrong. In an attempt to get some input on this matter, we contacted Dr. Michael S. Heiser, a scholar in semitic languages. He had this to say to us in an email and a link where he blogged about this topic.
“…there is in fact no evidence for it. There is only conjecture and “correlation-causation” errors of thinking. (Not to mention the serious chronological disconnects). 9-THE BIBLE IS FALSE (Council of Nicea & the Rapture)
So with all of this speculation, the conclusion that Karen Hudes and Dr. Ed Spencer came to is that the Bible cannot be trusted. While such a position based on the evidence provided is a severe case of inductive reasoning, we still suggest that one keeps and open mind and do their own study and come to their own conclusions. That being said, some key points made by Karen Hudes before she hung up need to be addressed.
a.) 300 Books Burned at the Council of Nicea
The first claim was that there were 300 books burned at the Council of Nicea. After searching for the source, it was discovered that this was a rumor started on the internet with no credible source. The truth was that the work of Arius was rejected and that his works, which reflected Arianism were burned for several years after the Council met. This is a far cry from the suggestion that the 300 books contained evidence for the Homo Capensis. The link below will provide a starting point for discovering the truth regarding this matter.

b.) The word “rapture” was added in the Bible
The second claim made by Karen Hudes was that the word “Rapture” was added in the Bible. To tear down this view is fairly simple. First, it should be noted that the word “rapture” doesn’t exactly appear in the Bible. But the concept is certainly there. And while a point could be made that the modern view of pre-tribulation is in fact something that was more or less” fabricated” by a Jesuit priest named Darby back in the 1800’s, the word and concept itself does come directly from the Bible. In 1 Thessalonians
“Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.”
The word for “caught up” in the original Greek is “Harpazo.” This word was translated in the Latin Vulgate was “Rapturo” and this is where the english word “rapture” comes from. Thus, to suggest that it was added in the Bible is unfounded.
c.) Circumcision
The final piece of relevant information that supposedly makes the Bible erroneous and evil is the topic of circumcision. Dr. Ed Spencer claimed during the latter part of the conversation that circumcision was in fact a form of mind control and population control because certain hormones in the foreskin were being cut off, and therefore the population of each generation, dumber.

However, there are plenty of people who suggest that circumcision is mutilation, or worse, that Dr. Ed Spencer’s speculation is correct. Such a theory comes from a website page that’s titled Hormone Manipulation. Here, an Australian geologist by the name of Jean-Paul Turcaud provides his reasoning for why circumcision is wrong. He suggests that the foreskin contains valuable hormones that help develop the endocrine system which is largely responsible for controlling our emotions, moods, overall hormonal balance, and even chakras. While the study seems to begin with a strictly scientific bent, it quickly dives into pseudoscience when he brings up chakras. But is that weren’t enough, once again, a strong antisemitic fervor is felt when he states:
“This discovery of mine is of greatest importance indeed than all my Mining Discoveries & Geological Discoveries and I am handing it out free of charge for the bettering of Humanity ! … and as my Knight Templar’s standards requires me to do ! Of course the case is well documented and at this point in time, this is my duty indeed to impart that knowledge to Humanity at large ! It shows that the whole Semite JIC (Jew; Islamic; Christian ) Sects are in fact a complete fraud, and the matter of importance in the Jew system have been carefully put out of the reach of the Common.”
…and furthermore…
“Unfortunately the Xians children bear the awful consequences of such debased and ignorant way of living… with the typical Coward trait of Christian society. Their propensity to lay low, to crawl in front of authority, to accept as gospel truth anything spoken sufficiently loud & strong!!”
Such a sentiment is not only a sweeping generalization of all people who declare themselves to be part of the Abrahamic faiths, but a comment stemming from blinding pride. Obviously the agenda prior to the study was to denounce the Bible and Christianity and so any “data” that would seem to support such a premise would be used.
CONCLUSION
As a way to close this post, it would seem that what Karen Hudes and Dr. Ed Spencer were promoting was one perspective to a puzzle that we are all trying to figure out. While no one has the exclusive corner on the market place of truth, there are many presuppositions at work here. On Canary Cry Radio, we work with the presupposition that there is a God and that He communicated to us through his Word, the Bible, and also that Jesus Christ who is the Word in flesh died for our sins and rose again. But for the guests, the presuppositions were a bit more ambiguous, unclear but perhaps touting Darwinian evolution and reductionist materialism as their basis, or even an eastern philosophy that rings of universalism. Either way, it was clear that their agenda was to reject the Biblical account.
The evidence they provided is the same evidence that we can all see. Insert the phrase “Homo Capensis” instead of “Ancient Aliens” and one would seemingly have the same working theory. But regardless of which one is correct, it should be noted that all the evidence that was suggested on this episode comes from alternative research. That in itself is not a bad thing because alternative research in vital and key in unlocking many mysteries that academic scholarship just doesn’t tackle. At the same time, it would be a mistake to “throw the baby out with the bath water.” In other words, there is value put forth by established academia that should be noted and considered. In fact, the very point that Dr. Ed Spencer and Karen Hudes both went to Yale University as a means to suggest their authority in scholarship, but then call the establishment a source for the coverup of Homo Capensis appears contradictory at best. In the end, we are all working from a presupposed philosophy to shape our worldview, and thus it makes it vital that each person do their own homework and come to their own conclusions.

The southernmost continent is home to around 1,000 researchers every year, who monitor climate change and study Earth’s history. After World War 2 this barren landscape risked becoming another battleground as tensions soared between the US and the Soviet Union, but these ambitions were crushed thanks to the Antarctic Treaty System. The global pact, signed 60 years ago, is dedicated to preserving and protecting the continent for scientific research and provides a safeguard against nuclear proliferation.

And YouTube channel ‘Seeker’ revealed in their ‘Focal Point’ documentary how they uncovered “never-before-seen footage” from the early scientific missions carried out by a British glaciologist.

The narrator said: “As a young scientist, David Drewry participated in hundreds of groundbreaking flights across Antarctica.

“While conducting research, David filmed his experience, and we asked him to digitise a roll of film, which hasn’t seen the light of day, until now.

“Thanks to friendly competition and collaboration, techniques like radio glaciology, which uses radar to map the ice, became vetted scientific methods.”

Dr Drewry explained during the series how he and his colleague Stan Evans developed a technique of overlapping radar scans with photos.

He said: “What Stan did was to get a camera with a piece of 35mm film that would slowly pass over the oscilloscope, the film integrated the signal.
“And with the film continuously moving across it, you built up a profile.”

These techniques are still being used today and Stanford radio-glaciologist Dustin Schroeder embarked on a huge project to digitalise all of the old data.

He said: “There were thousands of reels that we then combined together.

It’s hard to keep up with the lingo of the “alt-right,” which morphs and adapts at the speed of the Internet. Some of the phrases are obviously bigoted, others seemingly benign.

One relatively new, particularly anti-Semitic, meme known as “fellow white people” requires some unpacking. It’s not new but has recently bubbled up to the surface again in recent weeks — and it promulgates the belief that Jews are merely “masquerading” as whites as a way to tear down the white nation from the inside.

The meme is sometimes accompanied with a modified version of the “happy merchant” meme — picturing the hook-nosed anti-Semitic caricature wearing a “white” mask.

The meme is meant to highlight what the “alt-right” sees as the “shapeshifting” and ultimately non-white nature of Jews. Jews, the thinking goes, call themselves white when they want to appeal to “fellow whites” — and call for things like immigration reform or civil rights — but also call themselves members of a minority class when it suits them.

The broader debate around Jews and whiteness is fraught and breaks out within the Jewish community every few months. What this meme suggests is that, regardless of what any Jew may feel, the “alt-right” sees them as non-whites.

US Judge Says Feds Can’t ‘Selectively’ Prosecute Right-Wing Rioters While Ignoring Antifa. By Luke Rosiak.

A judge in California threw out charges against two far-right political agitators, saying the federal government engaged in “selective prosecution” by charging right-wing rioters but not the far-left agitators they fought against, and who did the exact same thing.

Robert Rundo and Robert Boman attended a pro-Donald Trump “free speech” rally in Berkeley on April 15, 2017, as members of Rise Against Movement (RAM), a “far-right, white nationalist” group that engaged in violence against left-wing groups like Antifa. One of those groups was By Any Means Necessary (BAMN), which would descend upon right-wing events to shut them down and start fights.

“Antifa and related far-left groups decided they needed to ‘shut this down.’ … They came prepared for violence, bringing weapons including pepper spray, fireworks, knives, and homemade bombs,” Judge Cormac J. Carney of the US District Court for the Central District of California wrote on February 21. “And they used those weapons, as well as their bodies, against Trump supporters and law enforcement.” …

Judge Carney objected to the fact that federal prosecutors charged only right-wing participants, even though left-wing agitators performed identical conduct or worse at the same event — which prosecutors’ own evidence acknowledged. …

Talk about admitting the bleeding obvious … seven years later.

Trump Lawyer Argues ‘Appearance of Impropriety’ Is Enough to Disqualify Prosecutor

Lawyers argued about whether the prosecutor Fani Willis has an untenable conflict of interest in the Georgia election case; her side called the disqualification effort “desperate.”

A judge in the Georgia election interference case against former President Donald J. Trump heard final arguments on Friday on a motion to disqualify the prosecutor who brought the case, Fani T. Willis, on the ground that a romantic relationship she had with a subordinate created a conflict of interest.

With a historic criminal case against a former president on the line, lawyers for Mr. Trump and his co-defendants took turns assailing Ms. Willis. John B. Merchant III, who represents the defendant Michael Roman, said that if the court finds the prosecutors’ romance did not create a conflict of interest, “public confidence in the system will be shot.”

But Adam Abbate, a prosecutor in Ms. Willis’s office, called the defense’s effort to disqualify


Ms. Willis “a desperate attempt to remove a prosecutor from a case for absolutely no reason, other than harassment and embarrassment.”

Defense lawyers on Friday repeatedly asserted that the bar for disqualification should be relatively low, arguing that even the appearance of a conflict of interest should lead to Ms. Willis’s removal from the case because her actions had undermined public confidence in it.


The question of whether the defense needs to show an actual conflict or just an appearance of one could prove pivotal.

“We can demonstrate an appearance of a conflict of interest, and that is sufficient,” Mr. Merchant told the judge, Scott McAfee of Fulton County Superior Court.

Mr. Trump’s lawyer, Steven H. Sadow, picked up the theme, arguing that “once you have the appearance of impropriety,” the law in Georgia is clear: “That’s enough to disqualify.”

Mr. Sadow focused on a speech Ms. Willis made in January at a Black church in Atlanta, calling her remarks a “violation of professional rules of conduct.”

Her speech, at Big Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, came shortly after the conflict-of-interest motion was filed.

Ms. Willis, who is Black, suggested in the speech that the scrutiny of her romantic relationship with the prosecutor she hired to run the Trump case, Nathan Wade, was racist. Some of those comments she described as part of a conversation she had with God.

“It was a calculated determination by Ms. Willis to prejudice the defendants and their counsel,” Mr. Sadow said, adding, “Can you think of anything more that would heighten public condemnation of the defendant than alleging that the defense counsel and the defendants were making their motion based on race and religion?”

With Ms. Willis seated silently at the prosecution table, Mr. Abbate told Judge McAfee that appearance alone was not enough to disqualify her.

“The defense has to show an actual conflict,” Mr. Abbate said, adding that it had not done so in this case.

After Mr. Abbate sought to bolster his argument by citing a number of prior cases in which a conflict of interest had been found, Judge McAfee interjected that “a number of these cases seem to rely on appearance of impropriety.” But Mr. Abbate said that in each of the cases of disqualification that he cited, the courts found an “actual conflict” in addition to the appearance of impropriety.

The legal arguments of Mr. Trump and his allies were advanced by a lineup of veteran defense lawyers who seemed quite at ease, while Mr. Abbate had a more halting, and at times fumbling, presentation, relying more on his recitation of precedent and case law.

Regardless, Judge McAfee will be more interested in the substance of the legal questions, rather than the delivery style. He said after the arguments that he would rule within two weeks.

The hearing Friday allowed lawyers from the two sides to sum up their arguments over a salacious subplot to the election case — one that has already caused significant embarrassment and turmoil for Ms. Willis, the Fulton County district attorney. Details of her personal life have been spilled out in the Atlanta courthouse where she had hoped to put Mr. Trump and 14 co-defendants on trial as soon as this summer.

⁣The stakes are high: If Ms. Willis is disqualified from the case, her entire office will be, too, and the case will probably be turned over to a district attorney from another jurisdiction. The new prosecutor could choose to continue the case as planned, modify the charges or drop them.

Disqualification would reduce the chances that a trial would begin before the November presidential election, in which Mr. Trump is expected to be the Republican nominee.

The relationship between Ms. Willis and Mr. Wade, an Atlanta-area lawyer she hired in November 2021 to manage the prosecution team, first came to light in January, in a motion filed by Ashleigh Merchant, a lawyer for Michael Roman, one of Mr. Trump’s co-defendants.

Ms. Merchant, who along with her husband, John Merchant, represents Mr. Roman, asserted that the romance began before Ms. Willis hired Mr. Wade. She also argued that Mr. Wade was unqualified for the high-profile job, for which he has been paid at least $650,000 so far.

Ms. Merchant claimed that Mr. Wade and Ms. Willis had engaged in “self-dealing,” because the couple went on vacations together that she said Mr. Wade had paid for.
In her filing on Jan. 8, Ms. Merchant cited Georgia case law in arguing that the situation as she laid it out met the standard for a disqualifying conflict of interest.

On Friday, Mr. Merchant told the judge that “we have here a very personal financial interest that’s been laid out in terms of money received by Ms. Willis, as a result of the scheme that she set up.”

Ms. Willis and Mr. Wade have acknowledged that they had a romantic relationship. But they have said that it began after Mr. Wade was hired, and that it ended before Mr. Trump and 18 of his allies were charged in August in a sweeping indictment that accuses them of conspiring to overturn Mr. Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election.


⁣The Accusations Against Fani WillisThe election interference case in Georgia against former President Donald Trump has been buffeted by an effort to disqualify Fani Willis, the main prosecutor, over her romantic relationship with a colleague.

What to Know: A tense hearing was held in Georgia to decide whether Willis and her office should be removed from the prosecution. Here is what we learned during the first and second days of the proceedings.

The Accusations: Trump’s lawyers are hoping to convince a judge that Willis’s relationship with Nathan Wade, a lawyer she hired to manage the case, has created a conflict of interest that should be grounds for disqualifying Willis.

Willis’s Response: In a court filing and in a raw testimony, Willis said that her relationship with Wade began after she hired him to join the case and ended in 2023, arguing that the romance should not be a reason to disqualify her.

A Messy Diversion: Regardless of whether Willis is disqualified from leading the high-stakes case against Trump in Georgia, the extraordinary detour it has taken may have changed it fundamentally.

Ms. Willis said the couple roughly split the costs of the trips they took together, with Ms. Willis often using cash to pay back Mr. Wade for her share.

One defense lawyer, Richard A. Rice, Jr., accused the prosecutors during Friday’s hearing of living “Robin Leach’s lifestyle of the rich and famous” on their vacations.

But Mr. Abbate scoffed at that: “The evidence was she stayed at a DoubleTree in Napa” he said of Ms. Willis. “I don’t know that to be a lavish hotel.”

The judge held a series of hearings on the issue in February that felt at times like a mini-trial.


Mr. Wade took the stand, as did Ms. Willis, who pushed back angrily against Ms. Merchant’s questions. Ms. Willis described feeling loneliness after becoming the district attorney, the violent threats and racist messages she had received, and her frustration that the focus on her love life had distracted the nation’s attention from Mr. Trump and the 14 co-defendants who remain after four of those originally charged pleaded guilty.

At a hearing on Tuesday, the conflicting accounts of when the prosecutors’ romance began took center stage. Ms. Merchant called Terrence Bradley, a former law partner of Mr. Wade, to the stand, hoping to help prove that the relationship began before Mr. Wade was hired.

But Mr. Bradley delivered contradictory information. Entered into evidence was a text exchange he had with Ms. Merchant months earlier, in which he said that the relationship “absolutely” predated Mr. Wade’s hiring. But on the witness stand, he repeatedly said he had no knowledge of when the romance began.

The judge will have to decide which of Mr. Bradley’s accounts to believe as he weighs whether to disqualify the prosecutors.

At Friday’s hearing, Mr. Sadow said Mr. Bradley’s text messages showed that the relationship began before Mr. Wade’s hiring. But the judge seemed uncertain.

“Is it ever definitively shown how he knew this and that he actually did know it?” Judge McAfee asked.

Another witness, a former friend and employee of Ms. Willis named Robin Yeartie, also testified that the relationship predated Mr. Wade’s hiring. But under cross-examination, she said that she had left the D.A.'s office on bad terms and was no longer Ms. Willis’s friend.
Mr. Abbate on Friday dismissed both Mr. Bradley and Ms. Yeartie as people who had an ax to grind with the prosecutors.

There is already some precedent within the Trump case for disqualification. In July 2022, a judge blocked Ms. Willis from developing a case against Burt Jones, a fake Trump elector in Georgia in 2020, because Ms. Willis had hosted a fund-raiser for one of Mr. Jones’s political rivals. A year and a half after the disqualification, no replacement prosecutor has yet been named to continue investigating Mr. Jones, who is now Georgia’s lieutenant governor.

Pete Skandalakis, the executive director of the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia, said in a recent interview that the current situation was different from the one involving Mr. Jones and suggested that it could move more quickly because an indictment has already been handed up.
