Preston Martin figured the retro blue Volkswagen van he slept in for a year during college was a goner, given that he parked it in a Malibu neighborhood just before the Palisades fire ripped through, reducing homes and cars to rubble and charred metal.

So the surfboard maker was stunned to find that the vehicle survived. Not only that, a photo of the vibrant bus taken by an Associated Press photographer was circulating widely on television and online, giving viewers a measure of joy.

“There is magic in that van,” Martin, 24, said Tuesday in an interview with AP. “It makes no sense why this happened. It should have been toasted, but here we are.”

The neighborhood remains closed to the public, and neither Martin nor the friend and business partner to whom he sold the van last summer, Megan Krystle Weinraub, have been able to inspect the vehicle. In other photos of the van, it appears to have soot on its windows, Martin said.

Martin purchased the 1977 Volkswagen Type 2 somewhat on a whim sometime around his junior year studying mechanical engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

His mother, Tracey Martin, of Irvine, yelled at him for blowing his money, but Martin told her he’d save on rent by fixing up the inside and living in it his senior year, which he did. She came to love the bus, and sewed curtains for the windows.

Last summer he sold the van to Weinraub, 29, who designs surf and skate boards under the Vibrant Boards brand. Martin makes carbon fiber surfboards under Starlite.

On Jan. 5 the friends drove to go surfing with the van, which Weinraub calls Azul — Spanish for “blue.” Afterward Martin parked it on a flat spot up the hill from her apartment by the Getty Villa, as she is still learning to drive the manual transmission.

Two days later the Palisades fire erupted, and Weinraub fled with her dog, Bodi, and some dog food in her primary car. She felt sad about Azul, but that was minor compared with those who lost homes or loved ones.

On Thursday a neighbor sent her a photo. In the background was the bus, still blue and white and not at all damaged.

“I freaked out,” she said. “I was in the bathroom, and I screamed.”

She called Martin, who also freaked out. He called his mom, who was ecstatic. “I’ve never cried for a car before,” Tracey Martin texted her son.

They were even more surprised when the AP photo aired on television and popped up online.

“We made the news,” Martin said in a reel on Instagram, and Weinraub contacted the photographer.

Weinraub, whose home survived, does not know when she’ll be allowed back to her apartment or to Azul. The two are thrilled that the van’s survival has touched so many people.

“It’s so cool that it’s become this, like, beacon of hope,” Martin said. “Everything around it was toasted, just destroyed. And then here’s this bright blue shiny van, sitting right there.”

In the summer of 2007 screenwriter ('The Siege')/book writer Lawrence Wright did an in depth interview on C-Span's Book TV. Wright is the author of The Looming Tower; Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction (2007). 'On some level I wasn't interested in them.'

Norman Finkelstein has a decent claim to be regarded as the foremost Jewish antisemite in America and one of the most repulsive human beings on earth. His 2000 Book, The Holocaust Industry, argued that the world Jewish community uses the murder of six million Jews to shake down governments like Germany and Switzerland for cash as well as to protect Israel from its repeated attempts at its genocide of the Palestinians.
Finkelstein believes that the principle reason for Israel’s existence is the murder of the entire Palestinian population. He first accused Israel of genocide in 1982 during the first Lebanon War. This would become a recurring theme, with him accusing Israel of attempted genocide in 2009, 2012, 2014, and now of course, after October 7th.
When I debated on Piers Morgan this week – a theme I shall return to and one which resulted in his much deserved digital decapitation – I told him that we Jews seem to really suck at genocide. Having been engaged in its attempt, according to Finkelstein, for last 40 years, the Palestinian population in the Gaza has grown by 1.5 million residents and Judea and Samaria by at least one million. When Bashar Al Assad attempted his genocide of Arabs fighting his regime, he was able to efficiently murder some 600,000 Arabs in just three years, using bombs, mustard gas, and biological agents.
Like sports and public relations, clearly, we Jews must add genocide to the list of things at which we truly suck.
Finkelstein had no response.
But something he did have a response to was the savage murder of 1,200 on October 7th. Within hours of the first reports of the barbaric atrocities,
Finkelstein actually penned these words: “It warms every fiber of my soul—the scenes of Gaza’s smiling children as their arrogant Jewish supremacist oppressors have, finally, been humbled. The stars above in heaven are looking kindly down. Glory, glory, hallelujah. The souls of Gaza go marching on!”

These are easily the most vile, grotesque, and monstrous words I have ever seen written by a Jew. Period.

The same is true of Finkelstein, an academic joke with no tenure who made his name saying that Jews use the Holocaust to get cash.
It’s fairly easy to provide. In 2016 Finkelstein gave an interview where he said, “One BDS leader told Democracy Now!, ‘Why debate Finkelstein? He’s not important. We should debate important people.’ I used to give 40 talks a year. Now I give maybe four. I know the number because of those 1099 slips I have to submit to my accountant. Three years ago, before the BDS thing exploded, I gave him 40 slips. Last year I gave him four.’”
Get it. Finkelstein makes money off his hatred of Jews and Israel. And as he became more irrelevant – after all, how many times can you accuse Israel of genocide before it become repetitive and tiresome and the media begins to roll its eyes – he had to up the ante by become ever more extreme in his hatred of Jews until… October 7th, where he actually sang “Glory Hallelujah” as the body of the Shani Louk, to whom I dedicated a Torah last week with her parents in attendance, was stripped naked and desecrated by hundreds of Hamas terrorists in Gaza City.
And that’s why we have to debate, digitally destroy, digitally decapitate, and digitally disembowel pathetic psychopaths like Norman Finkelstein and his ilk.
Because the one things we Jews have learned about our history is that THERE ISN’T A SINGLE LIE TOLD ABOUT THE JEWS THAT THE WORLD ISN’T PREPARED TO BELIEVE!
Two thousands years ago, the world said we murdered God.

Hi R'Shmuely. This is Rashi Rosenzweig. I live in Ra'anana and indeed we have met several times. I'm friendly with the Cohens and your son. Your son and I go to the same gym. You might recognize my face. Anyhoo...I have been waiting years for someone like you or Ben Shapiro to go up against Norm Finkelstein. This is what I posted on the YouTube page of your debate (yashar koach, btw) I am very convinced that Norm Finkelstein had to be bullied mercilessly by other Jewish kids when he was growing up which explains his serious contempt for Jews today. I think it's pretty obvious that R'Shmuely has been waiting for years to tear Norm apart in a debate, which I do believe he did. However, Norm ignored him for the most part. Furthermore, Shmuely was also correct about Norm's tactic in attempting to make his opponent comatose with his rhetoric (I want to say drivel, but I'm being a bit generous). Norm has a very pussiefied form of speech and has no fierce within it. (Please pardon the foul term, but I cannot think of a better way to describe that whining, pseudo-intellectual). Users have noted that the accent of the speaker seems similar to that of residents of Aleppo Province. It is likely that he is a mercenary with the "Syrian National Army", an auxiliary force of the Turkish Armed Forces." 😳🤷‍♂️

The establishment in Novosibirsk didn’t provide sex services, but as it quickly became clear –
only officially it didn’t. Penetration during a session was forbidden, for which the girls could be fired. But clients could resort to violence or be really persistent, so “it was easier to agree than to refuse and then get in trouble because of a fuss.” “That is, it’s a regular brothel, only with a different sign,” Anastasia concludes.
Up to ten girls worked at the parlor at one time. They were of different ages and had different education and different goals in life. But they all had a common problem – they were broke. The ones who came from other cities lived right “at work,” in a changing room.
“One girl had a baby, and she worked at night and left the baby with her grandmother,” recalls Anastasia. “Another had an adult daughter, and she would come in from another city periodically to earn money for the daughter’s education. A girl from Kazakhstan needed money to legalize herself in Russia. Another girl was earning money for her own education because her parents couldn’t pay for it.”
The work schedule was irregular. After a shift Anastasia was free to go home, but she was often asked “urgently to stay on,” and she might stay at the parlor for up to four days in a row.
Easier to recruit than to kidnap
Experts warn against calling sex trafficking “slavery.” According to Gelya Bessmertnaya, coordinator of the Eurydice feminist initiative, the term breeds the widespread stereotype that exploitation occurs only when a person is kept somewhere by force:
“According to statistics, in most cases women are exploited during recruitment and not through abduction. The same thing happens with refugees – they’re cheaper and easier to recruit than to kidnap. How they’re later harbored is another question. But the main factor of coercion is psychological.”
At the parlor Anastasia often heard: “Where else would you make so much? Look at what a good team we have, we are for you heart and soul!” Some girls fell into debt bondage. The parlor could give them an advance or money to rent an apartment, which then had to be “worked off.”
Unlike individual cases of sexual violence, trafficking is a long-term crime, and the perpetrator has an interest in exploiting the victim for as long and as much as possible. According to Veronika Antimonik, coordinator of the Safe House Foundation, the situation could last for decades:
“We’re aware of cases where a person was exploited both in forced labor and sexually. For example, during the day a woman was forced to work in a market or at a business, and in the evening she was sold as a prostitute.[…] At the same time, the perpetrators know that the longer it lasts, the less the victim tries to leave.”
