CHICAGO -- Sunday marked five years since the murder of George Floyd in police custody.

The case led to protests around the world, including in Chicago, but many experts say the calls for change have since stalled.

The murder of George Floyd in 2020 ignited an international movement and a push to reform policing. While some told ABC7 progress has been made, others said we're moving in the opposite direction.

It's been five years since the world stopped to chant his name.

"I think a lot of us thought that that was going to be the beginning of something powerful and monumental in this country... No, [it wasn't], not at all." said Ernest Crim III, an Emmy-nominated producer, educator and author.

But now, questions are mounting on whether or not those protests and rallying cries made a lasting difference.

"Once the George Floyd videotapes were released, we were able to collectively watch it, and there weren't excuses and things to distract us," said Aislinn Pulley, founder of the Black Lives Matter Chicago chapter.

The pressure was high in 2020.

According to Google trends, interest in "George Floyd" spiked in the days following his death, reaching a peak the following week. The surge came with mass protests and heightened conversations around police brutality, systemic racism and social justice.

But a new 2025 report by the National Urban League shows that interest has faded.

"Let's say it's December 2019, and we have the death of George Floyd, do you think you would have seen the same level of care that we did?" ABC7 asked.

"No, and we know that we wouldn't have, because we had very similar murders happen so he wasn't the first," Pulley replied. "It just happened at this very unique time where there wasn't an ability to look away."

"We saw what happened with several other people, Tamir Rice and Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown," Crim III said. "It's not trendy anymore, right? Like, they don't have to live with this."

Just this week, the Department of Justice said it's moving to drop police consent decrees in Louisville, Kentucky, and Minneapolis. Those agreements coming after investigations into the police killings of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd.

That announcement did not impact Chicago, where a consent decree between the city and the state of Illinois was sparked by the 2014 murder of Laquan McDonald.

"Because the state attorney general stepped when the United States attorney general of the Department of Justice withdrew previously, people can recognize that there is a pathway for reform that remains here in Chicago," said Edwin Yohnka with the Illinois ACLU. "We have reservations about how that process is working."

In a statement to ABC7, CPD wrote in part, "The Chicago Police Department has implemented significant reforms since 2020 that further our commitment to fair and constitutional policing. These reforms, which aim to build greater trust in our communities, include instituting 40 hours of mandatory annual training for all officers, as well as significant policy updates that inform this training."

Their training was showcased during the 2024 Democratic National Convention, which was praised by the secret service.

But for those like Black history educator Crim III, the efforts haven't been enough to stop history from repeating itself.

"If you Black, and you living in a Black community... you've been inundated with so much trauma since then, you can't even think about five years since five days ago, it happens," Crim III said.

"How do you get to a point where it's not you versus me, but more so us together, moving forward towards the same thing?" ABC7 asked.

"The way that we got the Civil Rights Act passed was through massive consistent organizing over a 10-year period," Pulley said. "It was not as a result of a summer of uprising."

"We need to be here for the long run, not just for summer," Crim III said. "It's something inside of you that is burns like ultimately, you just want all of humanity to do better."

⁣Many myths surround the Great Wall of China, from the story that it can be seen from space (it cannot), to the reasoning that it was built to keep the Huns from invading China, as seen in the opening scene of Mulan. This part of the wall is called the "Northern Line" or the "Genghis Khan wall" because of its proximity to Mongolia.

The researchers excavated portions of that wall and found it was only about two meters tall, or around six feet, with several structures at lower altitudes, and did not "seem so fit for defensive purposes." The wall probably halted the movements of people, perhaps to tax them. This part of the wall could have been built during the Khitan-Liao Dynasty, during the 10th century, before Genghis Khan was even born.

⁣The researchers noted the northern parts of China experienced harsh winters. People living in those areas may have wandered south to look for resources. Budding empires want to keep track of their people, so the wall may have been constructed as a means to prevent too much moving around. Studies are still ongoing, the Jerusalem Post says, but the team cannot go back to the site until the Coronavirus pandemic subsides. Now, there is a part of the Great Wall of China that was built to keep out Mongols and Genghis Khan, says New Scientist, and that's the one most tourists in China are familiar with. This 5,000-mile stretch of the wall near Beijing was built during the Ming Dynasty, which did have to deal with Mongol tribes trying to get into China.

The Great Wall of China may yield some more secrets in the future. Other portions of the wall system are still being excavated. One thing is for sure, though — it's good the older emperors of China built the wall back then, because it'd be really expensive to build today.

⁣Francesca Gino was a tenured professor at Harvard Business School, who was making more than $1 million a year in 2020.

She had her tenure revoked and was terminated by the Harvard Corporation after a graduate student - Zoé Ziani - accused Gino of falsifying data for her research findings.

The student was initially told not to criticize Gino - however Ziani contacted Data Colada, a blog run by behavioral scientists and told them about what she found.

They discovered that Gino falsified data in four studies from 2012–2020, they then shared their findings with Harvard.

In 2024 Science Magazine reported Gino had plagiarized text in a book chapter titled “Dishonesty Explained: What Leads Moral People to Act Immorally” saying she stole work from 10 sources.

Harvard's subsequent investigation produced a 1,282-page report concluding that Gino “committed research misconduct intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly” across all four studies.

On the flip side Gino claimed it was due to errors or sabotage

This is the latest controversy to hit Harvard after the University's morgue manager was arrested, along with his wife, for stealing and selling body parts.

In addition, Harvard is losing federal funding for their refusal to comply with DHS requirements regarding antisemitism on campus

CIA Director John Brennan recently spoke at a Council on Foreign Relations event. His remarks covered a broad range of near and long term national security risks, including the benefits and costs of geoengineering for combating climate change (transcript and video below). It is not surprising that geoengineering solutions to climate change (which can be conducted unilaterally by states and non-state actors with international consequences), are an area of interest for the CIA director. As Brennan points out, there is a lack of “global norms and standards” for addressing the geopolitical implications of developing this technology, and that’s not a tenable situation. It’s a topic many shy away from, but ignoring it won’t make it go away.

And as CIA officers and their intelligence community colleagues work hard to protect our country from the darker side of technological change, we are mindful of how even beneficial advances can have destabilizing effects in the long run…

Another example is the array of technologies, often referred to collectively as geoengineering, that potentially could help reverse the warming effects of global climate change. One that has gained my personal attention is stratospheric aerosol injection, or SAI: a method of seeding the stratosphere with particles that can help reflect the sun’s heat in much the same way that volcanic eruptions do. An SAI program could limit global temperature increases, reducing some risks associated with higher temperatures, and providing the world economy additional time to transition from fossil fuels. This process is also relatively inexpensive. The National Research Council estimates that a fully deployed SAI program would cost about $10 billion yearly.

As promising as it may be, moving forward on SAI would also raise a number of challenges for our government and for the international community. On the technical side, greenhouse gas emission reductions would still have to accompany SAI to address other climate change effects, such as ocean acidification, because SAI alone would not remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. On the geopolitical side, the technology’s potential to alter weather patterns and benefit certain regions of the world at the expense of other regions could trigger sharp opposition by some nations. Others might seize on SAI’s benefits and back away from their commitment to carbon dioxide reductions. And as with other breakthrough technologies, global norms and standards are lacking to guide the deployment and implementation of SAI and other geoengineering initiatives.

THIS is the shocking moment a Brazilian TV presenter and mayoral candidate smashed a political rival over the head with a chair.

The WWE-style footage shows TV presenter Jose Luiz Datena launching a heavy stool at political rival Pablo Marcal during a heated electoral debate on live TV.

Marcal was able to deflect the blow at the last minute but was hospitalised with suspected fractured ribs and breathing difficulties after the brutal attack.

Both men are bidding to become mayor of Sao Paulo.

Far-right influencer and life coach Marcal had upset Datena by mentioning sexual harassment allegations made against the TV host which were dismissed by prosecutors.

It led to an exchange of insults which ended with the physical assault.

Marcal had accused his political rival of wanting to attack him during a previous TV debate but said he didn't because he was "not man enough".

The debate, organised by specialist TV channel TV Cultura, was briefly suspended.

It was restarted with the remaining candidates after Marcal was taken to hospital and while Datena was expelled from the building.

Datena has been reported to police by a lawyer acting for Marcal, but there were no immediate reports of an arrest.

The politician admitted “losing it” in comments made as he left the TV studio.

He linked his reaction to stress caused by the death of his mother-in-law from a stroke after the sexual harassment allegations made against him.

Datena said: "I don’t choose moments of emotion. I’m a real man."

He added: "I felt it all coming back to me and I really couldn't help myself.

"Am I wrong? Yes. But what can I do?"

TV Cultura said in a statement: “TV Cultura regrets the episode that took place during the debate with candidates for Sao Paulo City Hall on Sunday involving candidates Jose Luiz Datena and Pablo Marcal.

“The broadcaster reiterates that, following the aggression, all measures were taken in accordance with the rules previously established in writing between TC Cultura and the campaigns of all the candidates present, including the expulsion of candidate Jose Luiz Datena.

“The debate continued subject to the consultation and agreement of the other candidates.

“During the event, all measures including those related to press coverage, were taken to ensure the safety of those present in line with the rules previously agreed.”

A statement released by Pablo Marcal’s advisors overnight said: "Pablo Marcal was cowardly attacked by Jose Luiz Datena, who hit him in the ribs with an iron chair.

"Unfortunately, Marcal had to leave the debate in an ambulance to receive emergency medical care.

"It's unfortunate that the debate continued without the presence of the candidate who was attacked.

"Pablo Marcal is injured, with suspected fractures to his chest and difficulty breathing.

"We hope that the appropriate legal measures will be taken and we count on people's prayers."

An earlier mayoral debate involving five participants had been described by one newspaper as "all bark and no bite."

Both men are bidding to become the mayor of Sao Paulo and have not held a political office before.
