We have both independently noticed the increasing use of terms like “bungled” and “blunder” to describe the crimes against humanity perpetrated under the cloak of COVID. Even well-meaning people who share similar values and goals sometimes fall into this trap being set by those preparing their parachute jump from culpability.

This Anthem for Justice is my attempt to succinctly chronicle the calculated intentionality underlying the COVID tyranny, and I ask your help in spreading the clear message that #MistakesWereNOTMade. Please share this poem and keep it handy for the next time anybody uses verbiage to gloss over the atrocities committed. Let’s make 2023 the Year of Accountability so none dare repeat such acts in the future.

⁣Washington Post Executive Editor Marty Baron and New York Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet sat down at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia last week for a rare joint interview with CNN Senior Political Commentator David Axelrod.


An edited version of interview aired Saturday on CNN's "The Axe Files," while the full interview is available as a podcast here. Pulitzer.org will post embeddable video footage from the interview as it becomes available.


In the discussion, Baquet and Baron expounded upon the media landscape of the Trump era. According to Baron, "I think this is a new situation for all of us. We were learning throughout the campaign and we are learning still during this administration. [...] [Y]ou know, Neil Postman wrote his book 'Amusing Ourselves to Death' [...] some decades ago about how we are moving toward the show quality of politics and that the show has become the thing.


"And I think the president actually understands that and uses that, uses that to his advantage. Some of the tweets are designed as distractions and some of the tweets are actually a window into his mind."


For Baquet, the president's rhetoric "has sent a message to despots abroad that you can disrespect the press. We’ve had presidents attack the press. We’ve never had a president go on foreign soil and attack the press so both of us have to manage newsrooms with people who operate in a third world. Both of us manage newsrooms with people who cover, you know, governments that don’t like the press."


He continued: "How can my correspondent in Cairo who covers a government that’s often antagonistic to the press — how can he make the case for the First Amendment and the power of the press and for covering that government independently when we have a president of the United States who says the things he says about the press?"


Despite these difficulties, both editors remain sanguine about press freedom in the United States. "[I]t's got to say something that our audiences have gotten larger," Baquet said. "That means that people in this sort of cacophony of stuff in the air and the fake news and the made-up stuff, that when people want to find out the truth, they do come to these institutions that have set themselves up [...] as standard bearers and as institutions that try to get at the truth and as institutions that have sort of, have held on to their soul. I think that’s, I mean, that’s great."

Nashville-based drag queen Veronika Electronika said she was tricked into participating in the right-wing, anti-transgender documentary The War on Children, and that her interview was heavily edited to change what she said.
In a recent article, Rolling Stone detailed the “deceptive tactics” allegedly used by filmmakers Robby and Landon Starbuck, whose film purports to explore the so-called sexualizing and grooming of children. The official description of the film on its website says that it features “whistleblowers, leftists caught on camera, survivors of child mutilation, trafficking victims, corporate executives exposing the plan to sexualize children, the creator of Libs of TikTok, Senator Rand Paul, Riley Gaines, Drag Performer, Pornhub’s Sex Ed Instructor, and many more.”
But according to Rolling Stone’s reporting, LGBTQ+ people and allies were approached under false pretenses. Emails obtained by the magazine show that Starbuck’s staff approached potential subjects about being interviewed for a movie with working titles like Identity Rising and It Takes a Village. Per Rolling Stone, Elektronika and others were told that the documentary would focus on the struggles of trans children, and how queer and trans people’s lives and mental health have been affected by the recent onslaught of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.
Some emails obtained by the magazine also claimed that the documentary would be directed by “award-winning” cinematographer Matt Rodgers, with no mention of Starbuck’s involvement, and that it would be distributed by a “household name” streaming service. When participants pressed for further information on the documentary, staffers claimed that they were under non-disclosure agreements, according to the emails. Almost all of the details that were shared, according to Rolling Stone,were “misleading or outright false.” Robby Starbuck is credited as the director and producer, and the film is only available on X and the right-wing video services Rumble and My Movies Plus.
Elektronika told Rolling Stone that last June, she arrived at a studio space to participate in what she was told would be an interview "on her views regarding the struggles faced by children in the trans community, and how the lives and mental health of LGBTQ+ people were being affected by the recent slew of bans and restrictions” on gender-affirming care and drag. She asked the interviewers what their last names were, and when they answered the latter with “Starbuck,” she attempted to exit the conversation.
“When I saw Mr. Starbuck walk through the hallway, I was like, ‘Wait a minute. I know this fucker,” Electronika told Rolling Stone. She added that the couple “tried to convince me to stay and I said, ‘You need to stop recording right now.’ The little red light kept going ... and then they wouldn’t stop. So I started recording myself.”
The incident is featured in the documentary, with the Starbucks asking her to “denounce behavior that is sexually explicit around children.” Elektronika provided her own recording to Rolling Stone, and the magazine wrote that her recording “makes clear that her conversation with the filmmakers was heavily edited to make it seem like she was completely unwilling to condemn the exposure of children to sexual material.” According to Rolling Stone, some of Elektronika’s answers were “used piecemeal,” and some were entirely left out of the final cut.
Sprinkled in among the thousands of glowing reviews are a few negative ones: “Watching this made me feel like a bad person."
“Obviously, parents can dictate what materials their children are exposed to,” Electronika told Rolling Stone. “There are no drag shows, or drag story hours, or LGBT events that are happening where children are showing up unaccompanied by a guardian or an adult. ... When we do have a drag event that is happening, where minors may be present, it would be a rare occurrence for anything sexually explicit to be occurring on stage.”
As Rolling Stone notes, these manipulative interview tactics are commonplace within right-wing media. The magazine also wrote that right-wing influencers are increasingly using the documentary format to “bypass social media and platform guidelines prohibiting hate speech

I will now share with you a true story.

I was NOT aware that Chancellor Palpatine was the Emperor until Revenge of the Sith.

How was that possible?!?

Until recently, I had not seen Return of the Jedi…and I have only a one-word answer to that:

Ewoks.

I could never make sense of how it was that little furry creatures lived in a bloody forest. It smacked of pandering to the fairer sex, who, I imagine, after first seeing the little buggers, practically cooed in the ears of anyone within earshot.

When Star Wars came out, I took the book with me, and read it while the movie played.

When Empire Strikes Back first showed, I had to leave because my sister freaked out when Han cut into the Taun-taun to keep Luke safe from the elements on Hoth. I got to see it not too long after that.

I never saw RotJ in the theater.

When the Phantom Menace came out, I thought that there was something a tad “off” about the Chancellor…but I couldn’t really put my finger on it.

Attack of the Clones should have made it clear that he was up to no good, but I simply didn’t have that prior knowledge.

Of course, it all came together in Revenge of the Sith – though his conversion to the Dark Side was clumsily done.

But now they have graduated to the next level: destroying language at its roots by breaking the link from signifier to signified. You aren't supposed to call mothers 'mothers' anymore, though I am still not sure why. You aren't supposed to call immigrants 'immigrants'. You aren't supposed to call women 'women' or blacks 'blacks' or Chinese 'Chinese', all because . . . someone might be triggered. All the correct definitions of words are now triggering, I guess, and the next step is removing all dictionaries from libraries

Dictionaries are just so suprematist, you know? So white male.
And why is this being done? I think it is being done mainly so that words like “thief” and “liar” and “criminal” can no longer be used for the usual suspects. They hope to outlaw their own prosecution via killing the language. If you can't talk in court, it is sort of hard to argue a case. They want us all stammering and searching for words instead of throwing them all from a high cliff.

Miley Cyrus recently married her longtime boyfriend Liam Hemsworth but she has also been vocal that she identifies as pansexual and gender-fluid. In an interview with Vanity Fair, she delved into how she feels being a queer person in a heterosexual relationship.

“The reason that people get married sometimes can be old-fashioned, but I think the reason we got married isn’t old-fashioned — I actually think it’s kind of New Age. We’re redefining, to be f—ing frank, what it looks like for someone that’s a queer person like myself to be in a hetero relationship. A big part of my pride and my identity is being a queer person,” Cyrus, 26, says.

She continued on that she loves Hemsworth not because he is a man but because they connect on “almost a spiritual level.”

“What I preach is: People fall in love with people, not gender, not looks, not whatever. What I’m in love with exists on almost a spiritual level. It has nothing to do with sexuality,” Cyrus says. “Relationships and partnerships in a new generation — I don’t think they have so much to do with sexuality or gender. Sex is actually a small part, and gender is a very small, almost irrelevant part of relationships.”

“Like, who gives a f— if he’s a guy, if I’m a girl, or if he was a woman—who gives a f—? We really are stronger together. One is the loneliest number,” she added.

The story also included a personal essay by Cyrus on the topic in which she says she is “redefining” what a relationship can be today.

“Being someone who takes such pride in individuality and freedom, and being a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, I’ve been inspired by redefining again what a relationship in this generation looks like. Sexuality and gender identity are completely separate from partnership,” Cyrus wrote.
