An incident at a Miami shopping mall which resulted in the arrest of four teenagers earlier this week has sparked the spread of a bizarre theory on social media which suggests the alleged presence of aliens at the Florida establishment.

More than 60 police cars swarmed the Bayside Marketplace in downtown Miami on Monday night to shut down a fight involving a group of teenagers who were also throwing fireworks at each other in the open-air shopping mall.

Four teenagers were arrested in connection to the incident, as reported by local WPLG-TV. According to the suspects' arrest reports mentioned by the television station, the juveniles were "causing a riot inside the mall" and "causing panic."

Dozens of officers were called around 8:30 p.m. local time to the two-story mall at 401 Biscayne Blvd. after several people called 911 to report what they thought were gunshots, but were instead loud fireworks. Police cars occupied the boulevard, temporarily blocked access between Second and Fourth streets.

The sheer amount of police deployment to address the incident has raised suspicions among many on social media that the case might have involved more than just teenagers.

Some who analyzed footage of the scene outside the Miami mall on Monday have developed the theory that an alien "creature" was the real cause of the disturbance.

One account on X, formerly known as Twitter, which promotes "red pill" cinema (with the red pill, a concept taken from the Matrix, having come to represent, especially within alt-right communities, the willingness to learn a potentially unsettling truth), claimed the footage showed "10ft Aliens/Creatures (caught on camera?)" which "fired at inside and outside Miami Mall."

The post reached over 99,500 views on the social media platform, showing the impact of the theory.

Another post on X that claimed authorities weren't telling people "the truth about why Miami had possibly the biggest police response I've ever seen in my life" received 7.7 million views as of early on Friday.

"I zoomed in on one of the tiktok videos about the Miami mall creature, so you can see the gray creature walking in between these police cars and the building," wrote another user on the platform, sharing a video of the Monday incident.

The same user claimed that eyewitnesses said the creature was blending in with the crowd "even though it was very tall" and that it's gray-silver in color. The Miami Police report of the incident does not mention the presence of any unidentified creature corresponding to the claims made online.

The theory hasn't met universal backing on social media, where some have pointed out that they couldn't see any alleged alien creature and others said that what on the low-quality footage looked like a suspicious creature was possibly "three officers walking side by side."

Newsweek contacted Miami Police Department for comment by email on Friday.

Miami police said that two of the male teenagers arrested, aged 15, are facing charges of burglary, third-degree grand theft, battery and resisting an officer without violence. The two other arrested teens, aged 14 and 16, were charged with resisting an officer without violence.

The teens' arrest reports said police was escorting 50 juveniles out of the Miami mall when they spotted another 15 juveniles beating up a driver and ordered them to stop. The teens ran away and were eventually stopped by police at a parking garage.

Members of the Walton family sold roughly $1.5 billion worth of Walmart Inc. stock at the end of last week as shares hovered near a record high.
The Walton Family Holdings Trust sold about 8.82 million shares between Feb. 21 and Feb. 23, according to US Securities and Exchange Commission filings from late Friday. The notifications were filed on behalf of Alice, Jim and Rob Walton.

Jeff Bezos also recently sold 50 million Amazon.com Inc. shares in multiple transactions as part of a plan he disclosed earlier this month.
A media representative for Walmart pointed to a 2015 statement from Walton Enterprises that said the Walton family expects to sell shares from time to time in order to help offset possible increases in its ownership percentage due to the company’s stock buyback programs, and to help fund charitable contributions.
The Walton family owns about 45% of Walmart’s outstanding shares through the trust and their main investment vehicle, Walton Enterprises, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Alice, Jim and Rob Walton have a combined fortune of $274 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The post, which was viewed by over 17,400 people at the time of writing, comprises of a video taken at a supermarket by an unidentified individual. The individual uses the camera to zoom in on the ingredients of a packet of Kinder Schoko-Bons chocolates.

The information on the packet of chocolates is written in German, and the individual points out that ‘Schellack’ is one of the ingredients. The video cuts to a web search of ‘Shellack’, with results showing images of an insect.

Together with animated overlay of crawling insects over the video, the caption reads, ‘There’s bugs in your chocolate’.

A Creeping Realisation
We translated ‘Schellack’ into English and found that it referred to shellac, a refined substance made from the secretion of the Kerria lacca insect. It is usually found in the forests of India and Southeast Asia, has been harvested for millenia, and has multiple uses.

Shellac helps to add shine to an object’s exterior and limit contact to moisture and oxygen. It is often used in cosmetics such as nail polish and hair styling products, in woodworking, and as a coating for food, including for candy, fresh fruit and medicine pills. Shellac is often listed as an ingredient under the name ‘confectioner’s glaze’, and can help to prolong the life of food items.

While this means that shiny food items often contain the insect-derived shellac, this is not a universal rule. The animal rights organisation PETA, which opposes the use of shellac in food because ‘nearly 100,000 bugs die to produce about 1 pound of shellac flakes’, note that some candy with shiny exteriors like Gobstoppers, Tic Tac and Skittles do not use animal ingredients.

It is also untrue that the use of shellac in confectionery means adding entire insects to candies. While a large number of insects die during the harvesting process, these are screened out during manufacturing. As a result, insects are more likely to end up in a candy bar if it has been sitting on a store shelf for a long time, rather than during the manufacturing process.

The Unvarnished Truth
Looking up Kinder products in particular, we found that shellac was listed as an ingredient for Schoko-Bons on Kinder’s UK website, as well as for Choco-Bons, the Australian version.

Kinder’s Singapore website did not indicate the product availability of Schoko-Bons or Choco-Bons here. Other popular locally available Kinder products such as Kinder Bueno and Kinder Joy did not include shellac in their ingredients.

Nevertheless, we found that shellac is a food additive that is permitted in Singapore and regulated by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA).

While this may come as a surprise to some, it must be noted that shellac has been used in confectionery for decades without any indication of health risks to humans. Moreover, human consumption of insect-derived products is already relatively commonplace through food items such as honey and some variants of food dye.

As such, though the post is mistaken to claim that insects are an ingredient in confectionery themselves, it is true that chocolates and other candies can contain insect-derived products.

THE LEGEND OF THE ASTRONOMICAL Clock in the Old Town of Prague seems to have come straight from the Brothers Grimm. The dark tale is set in the fifteenth century, when the clock is said to have been created by the great clockmaker Mikuláš from Kadaň. Such was the reputation of his craftsmanship that Mikuláš was approached by many a foreign nation, each wishing to have its own town square topped with a marvelous astronomical clock. Mikuláš refused to show the plans of his masterpiece to anyone, but word got back to the Prague Councilors.

Overcome with fear that Mikuláš might build a bigger, better, and more beautiful clock for another nation, the Councilors had the brilliant clockmaker blinded, ensuring that their clock would never be topped. Driven mad, the clockmaker took the ultimate revenge, throwing himself into his extraordinary work of art, gumming up the clock’s gears and ending his own life in one stroke. In doing so, he cursed the clock. All who tried to fix it would either go insane, or die.

While this is only a legend, it stands as a testament to the extraordinary nature of the Prague Astronomical Clock. The clock has been modified, destroyed, and repaired many times since its creation in 1380. It is perhaps the most well-known astronomical clock in the world, with four moving automatons (including a skeleton ringing his death knell for each hour), and rotating statues of the 12 apostles. It displays Babylonian time, Old Bohemian time, German time, and Sidereal time. It also shows the moon’s phases and the sun’s journey through the constellations of the zodiac. The calendar dial, just below the clock, shows the day of the month, the day of the week, feast days and allegorical pictures of the current month and sign of the zodiac.

Though the legend of Mikuláš is apocryphal, Prague is not without a dark history - the cobblestones of the Old Town Square below the clock are marked with 27 crosses commemorating 27 beheaded Czech noblemen. Be sure to go upstairs for a tour of the interior of the fascinating clock.

In Czechia, the Prague Astronomical Clock is known simply as the Orloj, from the Latin word horologium.

As the saying goes, imitation is the highest form of flattery. When it was created, the Prague Astronomical Clock was an outstanding technological achievement. In modern times, Koreans fascinated by the Orloj built a working replica of the clock and the tower of the Old Town Hall. Their building in Seoul is called Castle Praha Hongdae.

Update January 2019: After nine months of restoration—the most extensive since the 1940s—the clock has been returned to its former glory and is back on view.
