Claims that COVID-19 vaccines “permanently alter your DNA” or that SARS-CoV-2 was engineered in a lab were resurrected last week based on two dubious studies. No matter how many times you think these myths have been debunked, they always come back for another installment of the same misinformation franchise.
As repetitive as I have been with respect to this, there is nothing new under the sun when it comes to antivaccine myths, misinformation, and disinformation, and that applies to COVID-19 vaccines. If public health officials and messengers had paid more attention to the tactics and tropes of the antivaccine movement, including its central conspiracy theory, maybe they would have been more prepared for the onslaught of antivaccine misinformation that was unleashed as the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines were undergoing clinical trials and when they were finally initially approved under an emergency use authorization (EUA) near the end of 2020. They didn’t, and here we are, which is why, having seen it before multiple times last year, I’m faced with the return of the revenge of the antivaccine lie that mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines “permanently alter your DNA” (they don’t, nor do they “hack the software of life“, nor are they really “gene therapy“) this time from Jessica Rose, who is affiliated with James Lyons-Weiler‘s antivaccine “institute” with the humble name of Institute for Pure and Applied Knowledge (IPAK). Unfortunately, Saturday I saw this zombie lie resurrected yet again in the form of an article on Substack (where the cranks who’ve been banned from Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc. all go) by Rose titled “It does incorporate into human DNA. ⁣BREAKING NEWS: The Department of Justice is reportedly preparing to charge former CNN anchor Don Lemon under the historic Ku Klux Klan Act following his alleged involvement in a disruptive church incident in Minneapolis.

Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon explained that the law — formally known as the Enforcement Act of 1871 — makes it illegal to conspire to threaten, intimidate, or interfere with Americans exercising their constitutional rights, including the free exercise of religion.

According to reports, Lemon accompanied a group of anti-ICE activists who stormed a church during a religious service, frightening worshippers and disrupting the congregation. Footage from Lemon’s own livestream reportedly shows prior knowledge of the group’s plans, including discussion of the church’s location and references to a “secret operation.”

After the incident, Lemon claimed he was simply reporting and had no prior knowledge. However, critics argue his recorded statements contradict that claim and may demonstrate foreknowledge or participation.

Appearing on The Benny Show, Harmeet Dhillon stated:
“The Klan Act is one of the most important federal civil rights statutes. It makes it illegal to terrorize and violate the civil rights of citizens. When people conspire to do this, the law can be used.”

Dhillon further warned that the same legal standards used against other activists must be applied equally — including in cases involving churches and religious communities.

Don Lemon has not yet publicly responded to the reports.

Cybersecurity pioneer John McAfee wants authorities to stay away from Apple
’s encryption, so much that he has offered to personally crack the iPhone used by one of the shooters in last year’s San Bernardino, California, attack.

The McAfee antivirus software creator and outspoken libertarian fears that Apple’s compliance could lead to a so-called backdoor for government access, leaving users more vulnerable to malicious hackers. He claims that handling it himself would leave consumers safer.

“There has never been a backdoor that has not been hacked into by bad hackers or foreign nations. So really, what the government is asking Apple to do is to make every individual who uses an iPhone susceptible to hacking by bad people,” McAfee argued on CNBC’s “Power Lunch” on Friday.

McAfee, a self-described “cybersecurity legend” and presidential hopeful, first offered to decrypt the iPhone in a Thursday opinion piece on Business Insider.

The Justice Department filed a motion Friday to compel Apple to assist investigators in accessing data on the iPhone used by Syed Rizwan Farook, one of the shooters in the 2015 attack, which left 14 people dead. Apple CEO Tim Cook wrote this week that the government could eventually “extend this breach of privacy and demand that Apple build surveillance software” to gather personal data.

The government has maintained that it would only seek the access for this specific phone and investigation. Numerous lawmakers and prosecutors have argued that tech firms should be willing let police through some of their defenses to prevent future attacks.

McAfee, though, believes the FBI would want a backdoor, which he called “idiotic.” Since the method it wants to use is based on software, the platform could eventually be replicated by malicious hackers, he argued.

He claims that he and a team of hackers could extract the data in three weeks without creating a backdoor. His arguments, of course, spark the question of why he could crack the phone without Apple’s help when the FBI could not.

McAfee argued that the U.S. government is “20 years behind the rest of the world” on cybersecurity.

“All of the great hackers are not the type who want to wear suits, shine their shoes and show up to work every day,” McAfee said, adding many talented hackers “want to smoke weed while they work.”

He said the U.S. is “ill-prepared” for increasingly complex cyberattacks launched from foreign soil.

The FBI and Apple did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.
