LAKELAND, Fla. - The Lakeland Police Department is reviewing an arrest made by two of its officers. It involves a 16-year-old and the video appears to show one officer punching him in the head and another using a taser.

Community activists are calling this an act of police brutality. The confrontation between the officers and the teen started at a Memorial Day pool party, where the teen is accused of trespassing.

Now, community leaders are calling for criminal charges against the officers and said they aren’t surprised by this latest incident involving Lakeland police.

"This place is one of the most dangerous places in Polk County," said Pastor Clayton Cowart with the Poor Minority Justice Association. "This is police brutality in every way and I think this is child abuse."

On Monday, police were called to a pool party at an apartment complex. Some of the teens were accused of trespassing.

In the video circulating on social media, you can see two officers punch and hit the teen multiple times. At one point, an officer grabs the teen by his hair, before another tases the 16-year-old.

"He’s traumatized, his mother is traumatized, the other kids that were there are traumatized," said Cowart.

The teen was charged with trespassing, battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

According to the arrest affidavit, the officer said the 16-year-old was uncooperative and punched the officer in the face.

Lakeland PD said that Chief Sam Taylor has been informed of the incident, has met with community leaders about it and has already requested an administrative review by the Office of Professional Standards.

"I don’t believe that there is going to be any video that shows the young man struck the officer first. What I will say is this, where was his de-escalation tactics?" said Cowart.

FOX 13 requested the body cam footage, but at this time it is not being released. Some activists are questioning whether it will be.

"Lakeland has this culture of not playing the video, so let's see if we have the video first," said Cowart.

Some community leaders will meet with the police chief later this week. Cowart said there is a protest planned for Saturday outside the Lakeland Police Department at 6 p.m.

After a couple weeks of controversy, the G4TV host Froskurinn purged all of her tweets, calling it “spring cleaning” and joked that she should have tweeted “oops.”

“Cleaned out socials and got several messages asking if I was hacked. All is well! Just had it for close to forever and decided on a spring cleaning. Poop jokes returning,” Frosk tweeted, a day after posting a link to a manager to connect with “drama YouTubers” for interviews.

Frost then tweeted: “Although I should have just tweeted “whoops”. That would have been much funnier.”

Froskurinn spoke out against the sexism she had experienced because “not as bangable as the previous host” while confessing that she was just reading scripts, like other hosts, and not actually playing some of the games. Frosk had taken more heat for being factually incorrect on some news stories and decided to just doubled down with more insults.

The decision in this Supreme Court Case established the right of the courts to determine the constitutionality of the actions of the other two branches of government.

In 1801, outgoing President John Adams had issued William Marbury a commission as justice of the peace — but the new Secretary of State, James Madison, refused to deliver it. Marbury then sued to obtain it. With his decision in Marbury v. Madison, Chief Justice John Marshall established the principle of judicial review, an important addition to the system of “checks and balances” created to prevent any one branch of the Federal Government from becoming too powerful.

“A Law repugnant to the Constitution is void.” With these words written by Chief Justice Marshall, the Supreme Court for the first time declared unconstitutional a law passed by Congress and signed by the President. Nothing stated in the Constitution gave the Court this specific power. Marshall, however, believed that the Supreme Court should have a role equal to those of the other two branches of government.

When James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay wrote a defense of the Constitution in The Federalist, they explained their judgment that a strong national government must have built-in restraints: “You must first enable government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself.” The writers of the Constitution had given the executive and legislative branches powers that would limit each other as well as the judiciary branch.

The Constitution gave Congress the power to impeach and remove officials, including judges or the President himself. The President was given the veto power to restrain Congress and the authority to appoint members of the Supreme Court with the advice and consent of the Senate. In this intricate system, the role of the Supreme Court had not been defined. It therefore fell to a strong Chief Justice like Marshall to complete the triangular structure of checks and balances by establishing the principle of judicial review. Although no other law was declared unconstitutional until the Dred Scott decision of 1857, the role of the Supreme Court to invalidate federal and state laws that are contrary to the Constitution has never been seriously challenged.

“The Constitution of the United States,” said Woodrow Wilson, “was not made to fit us like a strait jacket. In its elasticity lies its chief greatness.” The often-praised wisdom of the authors of the Constitution consisted largely of their restraint. They resisted the temptation to write too many specifics into the basic document. They contented themselves with establishing a framework of government that included safeguards against the abuse of power. When the Marshall decision in Marbury v. Madison completed the system of checks and balances, the United States had a government in which laws could be enacted, interpreted and executed to meet challenging circumstances.

Daniel Burnside and his wife Sabrina spent 10 years of their lives fostering and spreading hatred for Blacks, Jews, Asians, Latinos, Mexicans, and the LGBTQ community.

They did so as part of the National Socialist Movement, once the largest Neo-Nazi white nationalist group in the United States, pushing their ideology through blistering rhetoric at demonstrations or literature espousing deep-seated intolerance for any ethnic group that isn't white.

On the website of NSM, it says the group is "fighting for civil rights and self-determination of Whites in America."

Burnside said that was the life he lived as the second-highest-ranking member of the organization.

He describes it as a brutal life, because living on hate took so much out of him.

"Horrible. Horrible, in one word," he said from his home.

Burnside said he had turned away from the ideology of white nationalists and removed images of swastikas from his property, claiming that there wasn't a single moment or event that shook him, but rather a gradual connection with common sense.

"I'd say it was over time. As I was in the movement, it was over time. I was completely one thousand percent on the wrong side," Burnside said.

His wife, Sabrina, said she realized there is no reason to hate or dislike anyone who doesn't share their race or color.

"If you've not done nothing to me, you've taken nothing from me, why do I have the right to feel that hate toward you?" she said.

Burnside and his wife say they're on a crusade to be held accountable for the ideology they once harbored, apologize, and ask for forgiveness.

"I'm denouncing anybody who hates somebody on the basis of race, religion or sexual identity," Sabrina said.

Burnside said they're reaching out to as many media platforms as possible to get out their message.

"I believe it's my duty to apologize and ask for forgiveness and help bring healing to this country", he said.

While democratic, this approach was deemed impractical and potentially volatile by the framers of the U.S. Constitution, leading them to form a constitutional republic. This system combines representative democracy with foundational laws that protect individual rights and minority opinions against the potential tyranny of the majority.

During recent political upheavals, some commentators and politicians have asserted that calling the United States a democracy is incorrect, preferring instead the term 'republic'. This assertion, seen in media portrayals and political rhetoric, often suggests that appreciating the United States as a republic exclusively helps safeguard against the flaws of a pure democracy. Senator Mike Lee's comments from October 2020 exemplify this stance as he described the American system as not one of mere majorities but rather as a "constitutional republic" where majority rule is tempered by statutory and constitutional boundaries.3

This restrictive interpretation, however, misses a broader point: the terms are not mutually exclusive and are interwoven deeply in the fabric of the US governance system. The electorate's power to elect representatives who make and interpret laws is inherently democratic, while the constitutional framework that guides and limits governance embodies the republic notion. Ignoring this connection narrows the discourse and can polarize debates unnecessarily.

Some political figures selectively use these terms to energize bases or criticize opponents, framing the narrative to suggest incompatible differences between these government forms. This deepens political divides and shifts focus away from discussing the substantive functioning of our government. The debate over whether the founders intended a 'republic' over a 'democracy' sometimes serves specific agendas without enriching the understanding of how both elements are essential to the nation's structure.

Conversations around election integrity and the validity of electoral processes often draw on this 'republic vs. democracy' discourse. Allegations of election fraud and the undermining of voting processes are severe issues that require attention and resolution. However, using the definitions and interpretations of 'republic' and 'democracy' to frame such arguments risks muddying the objective understanding with political partisanship. It distracts from factual evidence and legal standards that are the true arbiters in such cases.

Resources committed to sharing knowledge and fostering understanding about the Constitution play a crucial role in clarifying these concepts. By providing accurate historical contexts and expert analyses, such platforms help demystify the rhetoric and encourage informed dialogue among the populace. Comprehending the complementary nature of democracy and republic in the constitutional framework of the United States enlightens citizens and helps maintain the principles of justice, liberty, and equality envisaged by the founding fathers and encapsulated in the document they crafted. This synergy between varying forms of governance underlines the adaptability and enduring longevity of the Constitution as a framework for our nation.

⁣As with that other conspiracy mythos, Qanon, that has likely been encouraged every step of the way by Russian disinformation campaigns online, the Tartarian Empire hoax has grown to become a mega-theory as its proponents take a buffet-style approach, incorporating into the myth complex any pet theory or crazy notion they fancy. One can imagine that it’s especially hard to control a conspiracy narrative once it has been fed to the conspiracy nut community. Thus we see claims about the Illuminati come in to explain the worldwide cover-up, or of the Jewish World Conspiracy, which isn’t that surprising considering its connection to Russian claims of Aryan supremacy. To further explain why the existence of Tartaria had to be covered up, conspiracists have incorporated elements of the fantastical claims about Atlantis or hollow earth civilizations: namely that the Tartarians had advanced technology, free wireless energy technology to be more specific, and that the powers that be conspired to hide this from the energy dependent masses. And then, there is the doozy—that Tartaria was actually peopled by giants. Never mind that all the buildings they identify as Tartarian are made for regular size people. They found a few photos of grand, oversized doors, and of course they found statuary and paintings depicting, you guessed it, giants. They link the existence of giants in the lands of Tartary through the tales of Gog and Magog, which have historically been associated with Mongolians, as I discussed in my episode on Prester John. And from there, it just devolved into photoshopped hoaxes of gigantic bones. But the argument against the historical existence of giants deserves to have its own episode and would be too much of a digression here at the end of this one. To conclude, let’s just hope that the fringe nutcases who have taken up the Tartarian standard and run with it online continue to take the idea in such ridiculous and fantastical directions that it becomes ever more laughable, and thus, if we’re lucky, useless as Russian propaganda.
