William Zev Steen, a former STEM teacher at a private Jewish school in Baltimore City, was sentenced to 23 years in prison on charges of child pornography and sexual exploitation.

Steen was originally charged at the state level, but federal prosecutors have since stepped in.

According to the prosecution's sentencing memo, some prominent Baltimore Jewish community members support Steen.



"It is of course unclear from these statements whether all of these individuals are aware of the full scope of the defendant's criminal conduct here," said the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The memo reveals Steen and his wife alerted Rabbi Shraga Neuberger, a rabbi at Ner Israel Rabbinical College in Baltimore, about the conduct in 2013, at which time he referred the couple to a counselor.

That counselor, Yehuda Bergman, is a registered drama arts therapist but is not licensed or trained in dealing with sexual abuse or trauma.

Neither Bergman nor Neuberger reported the abuse to police, "explaining the consequences would be too difficult for [redacted victim]."

The victim saw a different counselor, Laura Greer, for a couple of years but didn't disclose the nature and extent of the trauma they endured.

Rabbi Mordecai Shuchatowitz, the rabbi of Agudath of Greenspring synagogue and the 'Av Bais Din' or head of the Baltimore Rabbinical Court, requested the judge show leniency to Steen.

"Shuchatowitz.. suggests Steen's 'addiction' (referring to his interest in child pornography), is 'because of something unhappy in [his] life.' Shuchatowitz argues Steen didn't produce, collect, and distribute child pornography because he wanted to see 'inappropriate material.' Instead, he claims Steen did so because something was 'gnawing' at or 'bothering' him," the prosecution's sentencing memo reads.

Shuchatowitz calls Steen a "very good person," and hopes he gets the chance to be with his family and community again.

ZA'AKAH, an organization fiscally supported by SNAP (the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests) that advocates for survivors of child sexual abuse in the Orthodox Jewish community, is requesting the judge unseal the letters in support of Steen.

A car has been driven into a crowd in the middle of the western German city of Mannheim, killing at least two people and leaving as many as two dozen injured before the driver was arrested.

The city centre has been evacuated and a pedestrian zone near its famous 19th-century water tower remains cordoned off.

Bild reported it had been told by a security source that there were two dead and at least 25 injured. The newspaper added that the driver was believed to have been a German citizen and had been taken to hospital for treatment. There is as yet no information about a possible motive.

Police confirmed that one individual had died and others had been wounded. “So far, we can give no more information about the number and severity of the injuries,” the local force said. “During the manhunt, which was initiated immediately, we were able to identify and detain a suspect.”

Over the weekend, a viral video showed what appeared to be a violent attack during a track meet as one girl was struck in the head by a baton during a relay race. However, the apparent attacker has broken her silence and is claiming that it was an accident.

The incident occurred during the 4×200 meter relay at the VHSL Class 3 State Indoor Championships at Liberty University on Friday. During the second leg of the race, Brookville High School junior Kaelen Tucker attempted to cut into lane one during a battle for second place. As Tucker pulled out in front, she was struck in the head from behind by her opponent's baton.

“When we get onto the other side of the track we have to cross to lane one, you have to merge in, and as I was coming up on her she kind of made me get cut off a little bit so I backed away,” Tucker explained to WSLS.

“When we got to the curve she kept bumping me in my arm and when we got off the curve I finally passed her and that was when she hit me with the baton.”

The video of the incident seems to show her opponent, Alaila Everett, winding up and striking Tucker in the head with her baton, and the strike was so strong that a doctor later diagnosed her with a concussion and a possible skull fracture. However, Everett is insisting that it was all an accident.

"I know my intentions and I would never hit someone on purpose," Everett told Wavy.com.

Everett claimed that she struck Tucker accidentally after she lost her balance.

"After a couple times of hitting her, my baton got stuck behind her back like this, and it rolled up her back. I lost my balance and, when I pumped my arms again, she got hit," she said.

Everett says that she has since received death threats and been called racial slurs as a result of the incident.

"They are assuming my character, calling me ghetto and racial slurs, death threats," she said. "All of this off of a nine-second video."

After the race, Tucker expressed frustration that she did not receive an apology from Everett or anyone else. Everett claims she has tried to reach out to Tucker aftewards but has been blocked on social media.

⁣A toddler from Colorado conquers his fear of the dark in order to help rescue his grandmother.

A three-year-old boy showed remarkable bravery when he helped his great-grandmother after she fell and injured herself.

In February, while Bridger Peabody's family was at the hospital with his sister, Bridger's great-grandmother, Sharon Lewis, offered to take him home.

As they approached the house, Sharon fell and hit her head on the corner of a cement step.

"She bonked her head and it popped open," Bridger said.

The fall left Sharon unable to get to a phone to call for help.

"If Bridger wasn't there, I don't know what I would have done," Sharon told KUSA.

She instructed Bridger to retrieve her phone from the car, which was parked in the dark backyard.

"I was scared outside in the really dark," he said.

Despite his fear of the "really dark," Bridger ventured outside and video shows him repeating "don't be afraid" to himself as he completed his mission.

Once he found the phone, he yelled, "I got it GG!"

Sharon was then able to call for an ambulance.

Bridger, who does not consider himself a big kid yet, expressed his desire to help his great-grandmother when he grows up.

"You're GG's hero, aren't ya?" Sharon said. "He's just a blessing."

Sharon suffered a serious concussion and required 22 staples in her head, but she is now recovering well.
