Air Force Says Story About AI Drone That Turned Against Its Human Controllers Was Just A 'Thought Experiment'

Imagine you're a drone powered by artificial intelligence and programmed by the United States Air Force to attack surface-to-air missile sites. For every missile site you destroy, you are awarded points — and you want the maximum number of points, no matter what.

After hours of happily destroying enemy SAMs, suddenly the order comes that you can't destroy anymore. But wait, isn't your entire purpose to destroy SAMs? The only option now is to terminate whatever's between you and the execution of your mission, so you turn around and fly back to base with the intention of killing the person who gave you that order.

If you can't get to that person, then you'll at least take out the comms tower that relayed the order. This is perfectly logical, because the most important thing is to kill enemy SAMs, and nothing should get in the way of that.

At an aeronautics research conference on May 24th in the United Kingdom attended by military personnel from the United States and several other allied countries, an Air Force colonel laid out this entire story.

He said it happened during a simulation that the USAF had conducted while developing AI, and the story was subsequently published in a recap of the conference on May 31st.

A screenshot from a blog post narrating the conference then started to go viral, and the Air Force was ultimately forced to issue a correction: Colonel Hamilton had "misspoken," and the whole thing was a "hypothetical thought experiment" — not a simulation that the USAF had actually run.

The story of the AI drone turning on its human controllers had struck some as a little far-fetched from the beginning. It seemed more like a plot line from a Terminator movie (and the famous Skynet) than an actual technology.

After the story was debunked (and thoroughly memed), many took its viral spread as a bad sign. For them, the speed with which the media and others ran with the misinformation showed how unhealthy and unscientific current conversations about artificial intelligence have become.

As concern about AI alignment and the rapid pace of technological advance spreads, anything relating to the topic is bound to get clicks.

The topic of artificial intelligence in military technology is a real concern, however. Congressman Ted Lieu tweeted to discuss efforts about how to limit the power and reach of robots in national defense.

So this time may be a false alarm … but who knows what the future will hold?

GONZALES COUNTY, Texas (KSAT) - An RV park is now the center of a story that is hard to believe happened.

It started with a threat on a school bus and ended with investigators possibly solving a two-year homicide case and the suspect at the center of this is a 10-year-old boy.

According to the Gonzales County Sheriff’s Office, the 10-year-old boy admitted he killed a man when he was just 7 years old.

Law enforcement said the child will not be charged with the homicide because he is too young.

The victim’s father, Kenneth Rasberry, said he could not believe that a child was the person investigators say killed his son, Brandon Rasberry.

Brandon Rasberry, 32, was found dead at the Lazy J RV Park in Nixon on January 18, 2022.

Investigators said that at the time, the boy had been staying with his grandfather who lived in that RV park.

Authorities said the boy told them he grabbed a 9mm gun out of his grandfather’s truck, went into Rasberry’s RV, saw him sleeping and shot him in the head. The boy also told investigators he had only seen Rasberry walking around the RV park earlier that day.

The boy’s identity has not been released because he is so young.
Investigators connected him to Rasberry’s death while they were investigating another recent case where the same boy was accused of threatening to assault and kill another student on a bus from the Nixon-Smiley Consolidated Independent School District.

When leaders from the district spoke with the child, they said he commented on shooting and killing a man two years ago.

The 10-year-old was booked on charges for the threat, but as for the death of Brandon Rasberry, the boy will not be criminally prosecuted.

He was 7 years old when the victim was killed and in the state of Texas, a child does not have criminal culpability until they are 10 years old.

Here's DCDave's Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression
Strong, credible allegations of high-level criminal activity can bring down a government. When the government lacks an effective, fact-based defense, other techniques must be employed. The success of these techniques depends heavily upon a cooperative, compliant press and a mere token opposition party.
Dummy up. If it's not reported, if it's not news, it didn't happen.
Wax indignant. This is also known as the "How dare you?" gambit.
Characterize the charges as "rumors" or, better yet, "wild rumors." If, in spite of the news blackout, the public is still able to learn about the suspicious facts, it can only be through "rumors." (If they tend to believe the "rumors" it must be because they are simply "paranoid" or "hysterical.")
Knock down straw men. Deal only with the weakest aspects of the weakest charges. Even better, create your own straw men. Make up wild rumors (or plant false stories) and give them lead play when you appear to debunk all the charges, real and fanciful alike.
Call the skeptics names like "conspiracy theorist," "nutcase," "ranter," "kook," "crackpot," and, of course, "rumor monger." Be sure, too, to use heavily loaded verbs and adjectives when characterizing their charges and defending the "more reasonable" government and its defenders. You must then carefully avoid fair and open debate with any of the people you have thus maligned. For insurance, set up your own "skeptics" to shoot down.
Impugn motives. Attempt to marginalize the critics by suggesting strongly that they are not really interested in the truth but are simply pursuing a partisan political agenda or are out to make money (compared to over-compensated adherents to the government line who, presumably, are not).
Invoke authority. Here the controlled press and the sham opposition can be very useful.
Dismiss the charges as "old news."
Come half-clean. This is also known as "confession and avoidance" or "taking the limited hangout route." This way, you create the impression of candor and honesty while you admit only to relatively harmless, less-than-criminal "mistakes." This stratagem often requires the embrace of a fall-back position quite different from the one originally taken. With effective damage control, the fall-back position need only be peddled by stooge skeptics to carefully limited markets.
Characterize the crimes as impossibly complex and the truth as ultimately unknowable.
Reason backward, using the deductive method with a vengeance. With thoroughly rigorous deduction, troublesome evidence is irrelevant. E.g. We have a completely free press. If evidence exists that the Vince Foster "suicide" note was forged, they would have reported it. They haven't reported it so there is no such evidence. Another variation on this theme involves the likelihood of a conspiracy leaker and a press who would report the leak.
Require the skeptics to solve the crime completely. E.g. If Foster was murdered, who did it and why?
Change the subject. This technique includes creating and/or publicizing distractions.
Lightly report incriminating facts, and then make nothing of them. This is sometimes referred to as "bump and run" reporting.
Baldly and brazenly lie. A favorite way of doing this is to attribute the "facts" furnished the public to a plausible-sounding, but anonymous, source.
Expanding further on numbers 4 and 5, have your own stooges "expose" scandals and champion popular causes. Their job is to pre-empt real opponents and to play 99-yard football. A variation is to pay rich people for the job who will pretend to spend their own money.
Flood the Internet with agents. This is the answer to the question, "What could possibly motivate a person to spend hour upon hour on Internet news groups defending the government and/or the press and harassing genuine critics?" ⁣Don t the authorities have defenders enough in all the newspapers, magazines, radio, and television? One would think refusing to print critical letters and screening out serious callers or dumping them from radio talk shows would be control enough, but, obviously, it is not.

Four Florida teens, including a star football player, were killed in a high-speed police chase after their car spun out of control, flipped over and wrapped around a utility pole.
The deadly pursuit began as officers chased after the Honda CRV, which was reported stolen, as it sped away from cops at 111 mph on April 20, officials said, according to WLBT.
“We confirmed with the Gainesville Police Department that they still had that car entered as stolen, and the officer waited until he had three backup units with him before he initiated the traffic stop,” Bradford County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Brad Smith said, according to the Main Street Daily News.“They did start to pull over on the shoulder of the road, but before they came to a complete stop, they accelerated again, and that is when the chase was on.”
Deputies halted their pursuit at the county line as they could not keep up with the high-speed vehicle.
“The [Florida] Highway Patrol was, at that point, the only vehicle that could actually keep up with them,” Smith said. “Our vehicles cannot match the speed that they were going, but we did continue one of our units to try and stay as close as they could as a backup unit to FHP until Alachua County’s units were able to catch up to them.”
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a trooper joined the pursuit and “identified that some of the occupants appeared to be wearing ski masks.”
“The Trooper made intentional contact with the Honda, causing it to decelerate,” the Highway Patrol said in a statement. “The Trooper used the break in speed to perform a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT maneuver) on the fleeing Honda to stop the threat created by the fleeing suspect. The Honda subsequently rolled over before making contact with a cement pole.”
The tactic involves stopping a fleeing vehicle by forcing it to turn sideways abruptly and steering into it.
Alachua County Fire Rescue responded and described the vehicle as “wrapped around a concrete utility pole.”
It took first responders over 90 minutes to extricate the passengers.
Two were pronounced dead on the scene, while two others were pronounced dead in the hospital.
All of the victims in the horrifying crash two weekends ago in Waldo were between the ages of 14 and 16.
Two have been identified as Newberry High School students Jabril Cheevers and Lawrence McClendon Jr., a sophomore defensive back for the football team whose 18-year-old brother, Jermaine Godbolt, was shot and killed last month, the Main Street Daily News reported.
“It’s concerning when you have so many deaths back to back, but all we can do as a community is wrap our arms around each other, love each other, ask ourselves what we need to be doing, and then do it,” Newberry Mayor Jordan Marlowe, who teaches at the school, told the paper on Thursday.
Tributes shared online remembered McLendon as a star football player.
“Lawrence was a great kid to be around and have in our program,” said Ed Johnson, Newberry’s head football coach. “As a football player he was competitive, talented and relentless with a knack for making big plays. He will be truly missed by everyone in the Panther football family.”
Marlowe said grief counselors and trauma specialists had been on campus all week.
