⁣These days everyone’s boycotting Sabra, and I don’t just mean the hummus.

Well before the current war in Israel, Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World came under fire for including the little-known Israeli superhero Sabra. Born Ruth Bat-Seraph, Sabra was raised in a state-run kibbutz, had bulletproof skin, an anti-gravity cape and worked for the Mossad. But following the debut of a teaser trailer and fresh details from the upcoming film, it seems as if her origins with Israeli intelligence may no longer exist, with some claiming Disney has caved to pressure from pro-Palestinian activists and test audiences to scrub the character of any link to the Jewish state.

Sabra courted controversy from the moment she was named as a new player in the MCU. In 2022, when Marvel announced the casting of Unorthodox’s Shira Haas as the character in the latest Captain America, many noted it was days before the 40th anniversary of the 1982 Sabra and Shatila massacre, in which Israel’s allies, the Christian Phalange, killed Palestinians and Lebanese Shiites at refugee camps in Beirut. The timing was bad, but Sabra predated the massacre by two years, launching in an admittedly racist 1980 issue of The Incredible Hulk, and was in no way named for the tragedy, but instead for the nickname of native Israelis, taken from the Hebrew word for the prickly pear cactus.

Even so the backlash was swift, prompting Marvel to say they were taking a “new approach” to the character. The fate of this white-and-blue-spangled superheroine was left in further speculative limbo following Israel’s war in Gaza. The production for the retitled Captain America: Brave New World (the current name followed blowback for the initial title New World Order, which some complained hinted at a popular conspiracy theory) underwent extensive reshoots and delays.

With the debut of the teaser trailer last week, we know Haas is in the film if not togged out in Sabra’s usual uniform. But an official trailer breakdown accompanying the teaser has many accusing Marvel of bowing to criticism to change her role, as it notes that Haas “joins as Ruth Bat-Seraph. A former Black Widow, Ruth is now a high-ranking U.S. government official.” Notice how there is no mention of Mossad or Israel or her codename “Sabra.”

The 326-word trailer synopsis, and little else, inspired headlines like “Marvel removes Jewish superhero Sabra’s Israeli identity for new Captain America movie” and “Marvel strips Jewish superhero Sabra of her Israeli identity.” Zionist writer Hen Mazzig posted to X that “Sabra is being forced to change her nationality to appease antisemites.”

But that may not be the full story. Columnists and Israel influencers are assuming that naming Ruth a Black Widow indicates that she, like the most famous Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff (played by Scarlett Johansson in the films), now hails from Russia, where the state-operated “Red Room” raised young women from childhood to be assassins as part of the Black Widow program.

They could be right, but then there aren’t many folks in Russia with a patronymic like “Bat-Seraph,” especially not ones that are groomed to be elite killing machines in an initiative developed by the Soviet Union, which was sorta infamous for suppressing Jewish identity.

It’s entirely possible, given what we know, that Haas’ Ruth may have made aliyah like many Russian Jews, changed her name and then came to the U.S.

Or maybe she was born in Israel — as the moniker Sabra would imply — and moved to Russia at some point to train and eventually came stateside for a government job. (Reached for comment about whether Ruth remained Israeli or was now Russian, Marvel Studios did not immediately reply.)

A kink in the theory that Haas’ Ruth is now just a Russian export can be found in a July 12 Hollywood Reporter article, which, while noting Haas’ character won’t be called Sabra in the film, described her is “an Israeli (italics mine) former Black Widow who is now a high-ranking government U.S. official.”

The intimation could be that the concept of the Black Widows was never limited to Russia and Marvel, rather than introduce the Mossad, is instead expanding its films’ existing lore. If Ruth was a part of an Israeli Black Widow program, this places her in much the same position as where she started in comics canon — reared under the watchful eyes of the state as part of its intelligence entity.

R⁣If her Red Room is less Winter Palace with guns and ballet barres and more kibbutz for mutants, little will have really changed for the character’s backstory, even if she may not name drop Mossad, have the alias Sabra or resemble a flying flag (Sam Wilson’s Captain America sorta has that last angle covered anyway).

Removing the comics’ familiar signifiers changes Ruth substantially, like the “new approach” promised in 2022, but doesn’t necessarily mean she’s been “de-Zionized” or Russified as many now claim. And, for whatever it’s worth in these fraught times for Israel’s global image, those who prematurely panicked that another marquee Jewish character, Marvel’s Moon Knight, would be shorn of his chosen bona fides for his Disney+ series, were in the end proven wrong in a major way.

We won’t know until Valentine’s Day 2025, when Brave New World comes to theaters, just how Israeli Ruth remains in the final cut, but even if she is retconned to be Russian, it’s unlikely to stop a boycott from Israel’s critics.

People refused to see Wonder Woman because Gal Gadot, like Haas, is Israeli — it didn’t matter that her character came from the mythic island of Themyscira.

A witness who was just outside the Pennsylvania rally where a gunman apparently attempted to assassinate Donald Trump Saturday night said he tried to alert Secret Service agents to a rifle-wielding man he spotted “bear crawling” onto the roof of a nearby building before gunshots rang through the crowd.

“We’re pointing at the guy crawling up the roof,” the witness, identified only as Greg, told the BBC of the surreal moment. “We could clearly see him with a rifle.”

“I’m standing there pointing at him for two to three minutes,” he continued. “Secret Service is looking at us from the top of the barn, I’m pointing at the roof...and next thing you know, five shots rang out.”

Former president Trump was just minutes into his rally in Butler when around 10 popping sounds interrupted his speech, sending the crowd into chaos. The former president collapsed behind his podium, as red-capped supporters behind him screamed and tried to duck.

Secret Service agents immediately jumped onto the stage, hoisting up Trump, whose face was dripping with blood. He pumped his fist before agents helped him off stage and into his waiting motorcade.

Trump has since said he is “fine,” revealing in a graphic statement that he was “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.”

“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin,” he said.

The shooting left one spectator dead and another two critically injured. Law enforcement officials said that a Secret Service sniper killed the shooter, who was outside the security perimeter.

The shooting is being considered an assassination attempt, law enforcement said, and an investigation has been launched.

The FBI identified the gunman as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old resident of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

The witness, who was wearing a red Trump 2024 visor, told the BBC that it was “absolutely” clear the shooter — who he said was clad in “muted colors,” like “tan, tight clothing” — was killed.

“Secret Service blew his head off,” Greg said. “They crawled up on the roof, they had their guns pointed at him to make sure he was dead, he was dead. And that’s it. It was over.”

Others have come forward to share their harrowing accounts of the chaos. Another witness, an emergency room doctor, recalled how he sprung into action to try to save a shooting victim in the crowd.

“I heard the shots. I thought it was crackers to begin with,” the doctor, who had blood stains on his T-shirt, told a CBS News reporter.

Someone had been screaming “he was shot, he was shot” so the doctor rushed over. The spectator had been shot in the head, and the doctor said he could see “brain matter.”

“The guy had spun around was jammed between the benches and a head shot here,” the doctor explained.

He then performed CPR and chest compressions on the man.

“I was the only one that did it,” he told CBS News. “There’s a helicopter coming in to get him.”

Boston Globe reporter James Pindell said he noticed early on that Secret Service agents were pointing rifles at a spot away from the crowd. But it wasn’t until Trump was six minutes into his speech that there was a “loud popping noise.”

“When I looked up, the same agents were shooting in the same direction their guns had been pointed all along. I knew they were shooting because I could see smoke from their guns,” he wrote. “I had a clear view of the stage, but at that moment, I was typing up what Trump was saying. When I looked at the podium again, the agents appeared to have Trump on the ground, protecting him. Then other agents were on the stage.”

He said the crowd was in total “shock,” with most crouching down as they tried to take cover.

“After Trump had been escorted to his car and people sensed the rally was over and they were safe, the crowd turned on the media,” Pindell said. “The crowd was angry. Middle fingers were everywhere. They asked the press if they were happy and blamed the media. ‘You did this,’ they said to reporters.”

George W Bush’s reaction – or lack thereof – upon learning that terrorists were attacking the United States is now infamous. But even though it was caught on video, most Americans didn’t see it until years later.
On that September morning, the relatively new president was at a photo-op with first-graders at a school in Florida, participating in a reading exercise called The Pet Goat (often erroneously referred to as “My Pet Goat”).
Before Mr Bush entered the classroom, he was told that a plane had crashed into one of the Twin Towers – although at this point many believed it was an accident. As Mr Bush listened to the children read, an aide whispered in his ear that the second tower had been hit. It was now clear that the country was under attack.
Mr Bush did not, at this point, leap up and take command of the situation. Instead, he stayed in his seat and finished the reading exercise, sitting there for seven minutes. Then he spent some time complimenting the children on their reading skills and took some photos with them and their teachers. When a reporter asked if he’d heard about the attacks, he replied, “I’ll talk about it later”.
Three years later, this muted reaction became a liability for Mr Bush when Michael Moore included it in his 2004 documentary, Fahrenheit 9/11. After years of being presented to the public as a strong, decisive leader, the footage of Mr Bush sitting inertly with schoolchildren as Americans were being massacred was a major embarrassment.
“Not knowing what to do, with no one telling him what to do, and no Secret Service rushing in to take him to safety, Mr Bush just sat there,” Mr Moore said in his withering narration.
Even after his presidency, the former president and his team have tried to dispel this narrative. Mr Bush himself has said he stayed with the children to show strength.
“I didn’t want to rattle the kids,” he said. “I wanted to project a sense of calm.”
The White House press secretary at the time, Ari Fleischer, insisted in 2016 that after leaving the school, away from the cameras, Mr Bush was full of resolve and bravado. In allegedly contemporaneous notes that Mr Fleischer says he hid in a bank vault, Mr Bush was recorded saying things like “We’re going to get the b******s” and “Somebody’s going to pay”.
One person who did take command of the situation, meanwhile, was then-vice president Dick Cheney. In recent years, research has shown that Mr Cheney spent the day of the attacks in a bunker below the White House, making calls and telling other officials what to do.
The Atlantic has reported that one of his first calls was to Mr Bush, who he told not to return to Washington (in order to avoid leaving both leaders vulnerable to the same attack). He also, astonishingly, ordered the Air Force to shoot down a suspicious passenger plane headed toward DC. (Mr Cheney has said he cleared this order with Mr Bush first, but according to The Atlantic, evidence shows the order came before the permission.) That order, fortunately, never made its way to any fighter pilots.
Three days later, with more time to prepare, Mr Bush famously spoke through a bullhorn atop the rubble of the World Trade Center. Standing in plainclothes among firefighters and first responders, the president projected the kind of take-charge machismo he had lacked on the day of the attacks.
“I can hear you!” he told the crowd, which couldn’t hear him through the bullhorn. “The rest of the world hears you. And the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon.”
For years, that was the image that many Americans had of Mr Bush after 9/11 – decisive, resolute, brave. Pundits spoke ad nauseam about his “resolve”. Even though video footage of it existed, almost no one saw Mr Bush’s in-the-moment reaction to the terrorist attacks.
Then Fahrenheit 9/11 came along. In the years since then, despite all the efforts at historical revision, the image of this commander-in-chief that sticks out in many American minds is of him sitting in that Florida classroom, reading with children about a goat.
