SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — A sleepy Ohio city-turned-center of the political universe has faced an onslaught of bomb threats in recent weeks over baseless conspiracy theories about its population of Haitian migrants.

Now it’s bracing for another challenge: A possible visit from Donald Trump.

The former president — who threw Springfield, Ohio, into disarray earlier this month when he falsely claimed an “invasion” of Haitian migrants here were eating cats, dogs and geese — declared at a recent campaign rally that he planned to visit the city in the coming weeks, though it’s unclear if he actually will come. And although he has not announced an appearance date, some residents are welcoming the visit — while others are readying themselves for impact.

“I think everybody needs to be heard, but I feel like you’re adding fuel to the fire,” said Amanda Jones, a nurse practitioner in the area. “Resources are already spread super thin in this area, not only for the people’s safety that’s going to attend, but also for the candidate’s safety as well, because it’s a very divisive time right now.”

Springfield Mayor Rob Rue, a Republican, urged Trump not to come, saying during a press conference last week it would “undoubtedly place additional demands on our safety infrastructure.”

“Should he choose to change his plans, it would convey a significant message of peace to the city of Springfield,” Rue said, adding that the city is “committed to ensuring that the event proceeds safely and smoothly for both the residents and visitors.”

Trump’s campaign did not provide specifics on Trump’s plans to visit to Springfield. In a statement, Trump campaign national press secretary Karoline Leavitt said: “While the media may find these stories and experiences unimportant and inconvenient, President Trump will continue giving a voice to Americans who are expressing their concerns about the influx of illegals and rising migrant crime in their communities.”

As of Wednesday morning, the Secret Service — which coordinates campaign event safety with state and local law enforcement — had not informed the state of a planned visit, according to Andy Wilson, director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety.

Still, Wilson said, “obviously, if he comes, it won’t be a surprise.” He promised that state and local law enforcement “will be equipped to handle whatever comes our way.”

A group of congressional Democrats is also planning a trip to Springfield in solidarity with the migrants, Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.) — who is Haitian American — said Friday at a news conference. Members of the congressional Haitian Caucus on Friday introduced a resolution to condemn racism against the Haitian community.

In the weeks since Trump first claimed at the presidential debate that Haitian migrants were eating pets — which Springfield officials have repeatedly denied — the small Ohio city has contended with dozens of threats that have shuttered schools, government buildings, hospitals and stores.

Police have erected watch towers throughout the city, which now has a pack of bomb-sniffing dogs and a cadre of state law enforcement personnel ready to respond at a moment’s notice, according to Wilson. Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine — who on Friday criticized Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, for “rhetoric” he said “hurts the city and its people” — stationed state troopers at each of Springfield’s public schools for the duration of each school day.

“Locally, the resources are stretched thin, there’s no doubt about it,” Wilson said. But, he added: “The fact that we have a bunch of resources over there already, from a state perspective, makes [a Trump visit] less logistically heavy for us, actually.”

Some residents of Springfield and the surrounding area told POLITICO they were concerned a Trump visit would inflame tensions.

“I definitely don’t want him coming to Ohio,” said Judy Shaw, a Democrat who had joined her Republican partner to attend a town hall with Trump surrogate Vivek Ramaswamy. “I think it wouldn’t bring anything good.”

Lie Reinforces how out of control FBI has become

Fairfax, Va. – The Department of Justice now says a DoJ court document claiming to have recovered a “fully constructed U.S. Capitol Lego set” from the home of a man charged in the Jan. 6 Capitol breach was “a miscommunication,” and the Lego set was actually unconstructed and in a box.

Robert Morss, 27, is accused of leading fellow rioters in what prosecutors say was “one of the most intense and prolonged clashes” with officers on Jan. 6. The new court filing said, “In original detention memoranda, the undersigned stated that law enforcement found a ‘fully constructed US Capitol Lego set.’ That statement appears to be inaccurate. The Lego set was in a box and not fully constructed at the time of the search.”

Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning issued the following statement in response to this FBI lie:

“Once again, the Justice Department has had to admit that they lied about events surrounding Jan. 6. While the Lego lie may seem silly, it is part of a pattern that federal law enforcement has demonstrated in this case, and indeed over the past five years,” said Rick Manning, president of Americans for Limited Government.

“The most egregious example of this lying for public relations purposes was the death of Capitol Police Office Brian Sicknick. He was the officer who laid in state and was eulogized by Democrat and Republican members of Congress alike for his bravery in dying in defense of the Capitol. Only problem was, while Officer Sicknick did die on January 7, the coroner’s report shows that it had nothing to do with the events of January 6th. He was not hit in the head with a fire extinguisher and the Capitol Police knew it. Officer Sicknick checked in at the end of his shift with no signs of physical injury, so the Capitol Police knew that his death was unrelated and certainly that he was not injured as was reported. Yet, it was this lie that was used as justification to impeach President Trump and it was this lie that the Justice Department continues to use as the justification for holding hundreds of people in solitary confinement without any semblance of a speedy trial.

“The Lego lie just reinforces how out of control our nation’s FBI has become. The hundreds of people being held without bail in inhumane conditions demonstrates that the very essence of our judicial system, the presumption of innocence, has been run over by the political weaponization of federal law enforcement. The time is now for the Justice Department to either move forward with trials, or grant bail for people from all over the United States, some of whom never even entered the Capitol complex. Much more than a stolen podium is at stake, the very essence of our liberties are on the line. It’s time for the Biden Justice Department to either put up or shut up.”

Elon Musk said on Saturday that the Unabomber — despite his twisted, homicidal rampage that killed three people and injured two dozen more — “might not be wrong” in his belief that technology is detrimental to society.
The billionaire tweeted the comment the same day the Unabomber, whose real name was Ted Kaczynski, died in his jail cell aged 81 after nearly three decades in prison.
Starting in 1978, Kaczynski waged a 17-year, anti-tech campaign by constructing 16 homemade bombs and mailing them to people he believed were destroying the environment and creating a more technically advanced society.
The explosives made Kaczynski the most prolific bomber in American history.
While living as a hermit in a Montana cabin, making bombs and evading authorities for 20 years, Kaczynski penned a 35,000-word manifesto titled “Industrial Society and Its Future,” a scathing writeup against technology and leftist views.
In it, the Harvard-educated mathematics professor warned the world about how rapidly expanding technology would threaten and possibly ruin humans.
“The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race,” the work, better known as “The Unabomber Manifesto,” infamously begins.
When author Ashley St. Clair tweeted the quote alongside news of Kaczynski’s death on Saturday, Musk replied with: “He might not be wrong.”

The following day, Musk tweeted a meme showing a grim reaper at a claw machine, suggesting Kaczynski did not die by suicide in a prison medical center, as sources told the Associated Press.
Kaczynski, who was suffering from late-stage cancer, was transferred to a federal medical center in North Carolina in 2021 to get care for his health issues.
He had previously been serving four life sentences plus 30 years at a maximum-security facility in Colorado.
To some, Kaczynski was a folk hero for his pro-Luddite views, which he wrote about in his manifesto, arguing that “if our society had no social problems at all, the leftists would have to INVENT problems in order to provide themselves with an excuse for making a fuss.”
In the work — which was published as an eight-page Washington Post spread and ultimately led to his arrest — Kaczynski also claimed that technological advancements have “destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world.”

While Musk may agree with Kaczynski’s views on some level, he’s also arguably the face of some of today’s biggest tech advancements.
Just last month Musk’s brain-implant company Neuralink received the Food and Drug Administration’s approval to launch the first-in-human clinical study.
Musk claims the chip will help paralyzed people walk again and cure other neurological ailments, including blindness.
He also recently said during the Wall Street Journal’s CEO Council Summit that there is a “non-zero chance” that rogue advanced artificial intelligence could annihilate humanity.
Musk also raised the possibility that an advanced AI system could decide to place humanity “under strict controls.”
Musk also said that AI could turn on humans.
For example, it could decide to seize “all the computing systems and weapons systems of Earth and effectively being like some sort of ‘uber-nanny.’” he said during the CEO Council Summit.
Kaczynski shared a similar sentiment in his manifesto. He claimed technological advancements would strip humans of their freedom because “the regulation of our lives by large organizations is necessary for the functioning of industrial-technological society. The result is a sense of powerlessness on the part of the average person.”
Meanwhile, Musk called for a six-month pause in further developing AI-backed models like ChatGPT until regulators developed and implemented safety protocols back in April.

No matter how many times you think these myths have been debunked, they always come back for another installment of the same misinformation franchise.
As repetitive as I have been with respect to this, there is nothing new under the sun when it comes to antivaccine myths, misinformation, and disinformation, and that applies to COVID-19 vaccines. If public health officials and messengers had paid more attention to the tactics and tropes of the antivaccine movement, including its central conspiracy theory, maybe they would have been more prepared for the onslaught of antivaccine misinformation that was unleashed as the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines were undergoing clinical trials and when they were finally initially approved under an emergency use authorization (EUA) near the end of 2020. They didn’t, and here we are, which is why, having seen it before multiple times last year, I’m faced with the return of the revenge of the antivaccine lie that mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines “permanently alter your DNA” (they don’t, nor do they “hack the software of life“, nor are they really “gene therapy“) this time from Jessica Rose, who is affiliated with James Lyons-Weiler‘s antivaccine “institute” with the humble name of Institute for Pure and Applied Knowledge (IPAK). What is 'Jewish Lightning'? and is it an antisemitic term?
The term was referenced in a recent episode of the hit Hulu show The Bear

The Bear, a TV show set in Chicago, and depicting the lives of a rag-tag bunch of chefs trying to save their restaurant, became an instant hit when it debuted in the summer of 2022.

Starring Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Canadian chef-turned-actor Matty Matheson, the Bear's gritty underworld of gambling debts, gangster turf wars and failed health inspections is far from politically correct.

In the first episode of the newly released second series of the show, one of the main characters, Richie, played by Jewish actor Ebon Moss Bachrach uses the term "Jewish lightning" to describe damage to the restaurant caused by an insurance scam.

In this context, "Jewish Lightning" refers to deliberately burning down a property or business to collect the insurance payout.

In the scene, the staff of the restaurant is discussing ways to pass a gas safety examination, when Ayo Edebiri's character Sydney accidentally puts her hand through a hole in a wall covered up by a baseball poster.

Richie, then explains that the hole was originally made in a failed case of "Jewish Lightning."

The American Jewish Committee describes "Jewish Lightning" as a slur rooted in the stereotype of Jews as stingy business owners. In a dictionary on their website, the AJC say: "The faulty reasoning argues that because Jews love money and are unwilling to spend it, they will commit insurance fraud."

It's not clear where the term originated, but its use has been widely documented for decades. In 2019, when the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris burned down, some people on social media accused the owners of orchestrating "Jewish Lightning" on the historic building.

In The Bear, the problematic nature of the term is recognised, with other characters in the scene imploring Richie to stop calling insurance fraud the antisemitic term.

Bhopal: In a shocking incident from Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district, a 24-year-old man was filmed brutally assaulting a 19-year-old woman for allegedly refusing to marry him. A viral video of the heart-wrenching attack showed the couple walking while holding hands when suddenly the man slaps her, grabs her hair, and slams her into the ground head-first. He then mercilessly kicks her with full force in the face and all over her body. The woman appears unconscious from the attack, and the man tried to steady her on her feet while instructing his friend who was recording the video to delete the footage. The woman was seen lying unconscious for hours on the side of the road.

The distressing video was shot on Wednesday in the Mauganj area of Rewa. The police registered a case against the two men under different sections of the law, including the IT Act, and have arrested the accused, Pankaj Tripathi, and the man who was recording the video. Pankaj Tripathi was caught from Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh after being on the run for days. Police are now interrogating both men.

Pankaj allegedly got furious when the woman refused to marry him, as her family didn't approve.

Locals found the woman unconscious on the side of the road, and informed the police, who took her to the hospital for treatment, and also registered a case.

Rewa's Additional Superintendent of Police, Anil Sonkar, said the man is a resident of Dhera village in Mauganj town, while the girl is from some other village.

"There was a dispute between the two about something, and the man beat up the woman. The people present on the spot informed the police, after which we reached the spot and brought the young couple with them. The woman was then sent to the hospital for treatment," Mr Sonkar said, adding that the woman's mother, who reached the police station, did not take any action.

The police, acting on the basis of the viral video, has registered a case against the man.

The victim filed a complaint against the person who shot and circulated the video, and a case has been registered under the Information Technology (IT) Act.
