William Zev Steen, a former STEM teacher at a private Jewish school in Baltimore City, was sentenced to 23 years in prison on charges of child pornography and sexual exploitation.

Steen was originally charged at the state level, but federal prosecutors have since stepped in.

According to the prosecution's sentencing memo, some prominent Baltimore Jewish community members support Steen.



"It is of course unclear from these statements whether all of these individuals are aware of the full scope of the defendant's criminal conduct here," said the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The memo reveals Steen and his wife alerted Rabbi Shraga Neuberger, a rabbi at Ner Israel Rabbinical College in Baltimore, about the conduct in 2013, at which time he referred the couple to a counselor.

That counselor, Yehuda Bergman, is a registered drama arts therapist but is not licensed or trained in dealing with sexual abuse or trauma.

Neither Bergman nor Neuberger reported the abuse to police, "explaining the consequences would be too difficult for [redacted victim]."

The victim saw a different counselor, Laura Greer, for a couple of years but didn't disclose the nature and extent of the trauma they endured.

Rabbi Mordecai Shuchatowitz, the rabbi of Agudath of Greenspring synagogue and the 'Av Bais Din' or head of the Baltimore Rabbinical Court, requested the judge show leniency to Steen.

"Shuchatowitz.. suggests Steen's 'addiction' (referring to his interest in child pornography), is 'because of something unhappy in [his] life.' Shuchatowitz argues Steen didn't produce, collect, and distribute child pornography because he wanted to see 'inappropriate material.' Instead, he claims Steen did so because something was 'gnawing' at or 'bothering' him," the prosecution's sentencing memo reads.

Shuchatowitz calls Steen a "very good person," and hopes he gets the chance to be with his family and community again.

ZA'AKAH, an organization fiscally supported by SNAP (the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests) that advocates for survivors of child sexual abuse in the Orthodox Jewish community, is requesting the judge unseal the letters in support of Steen.

AUSTIN, Texas — Authorities have arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with Thursday night's 17-vehicle crash on I-35 that left five people dead, including an infant and a child.

Solomun Weldekeal Araya faces five counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault, according to the Austin Police Department. He is currently in custody at the Travis County Jail.

CBS Austin has confirmed Araya is scheduled to have a court date next week for a previous speeding violation in Wilmer in the DFW area.

The crash occurred at approximately 11:38 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-35 between Howard Lane and Parmer Lane in North Austin. The area is currently under construction, with concrete barriers lining the roadway.

Another conspiracy theorist noted the absence of any obvious Secret Service agents nearby when the Democratic presidential candidate walked out of Chelsea’s Manhattan apartment building.

Some citizen sleuths claimed the woman emerging from Chelsea’s apartment was actually someone named Teresa Barnwell — who is the spitting image of the presidential candidate.

Barnwell added fuel to the fire when she posted a photo of herself outside the same building wearing sunglasses with the caption: “Maybe I was in New York.”

She appeared live on Spike TV's Lip Sync Battle along with lookalikes of Bill Clinton, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

BURLINGTON, Mass. —

Parents and students voiced their concerns Tuesday night over a survey sent to Burlington Public Schools students that included some detailed questions about sexual behavior.

"Where the line was entirely crossed was the survey – disgusting and purely vile," said one 7th-grade student.

David Hanafin is the parent of another 7th grader. He opted out of allowing his son to take the survey, but says the school gave it to him anyway.

"The only thing parents are asking, teach kids to read, write, math, science, send them home, and we’ll take care of the rest," Hanafin said.

The school committee acknowledges that at least five students were given the survey even though their parents didn’t want them to take it.

The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) asks questions about bullying, drug and alcohol use, gender identity, and nutrition.

"The YRBS has been used not to harm children, but ensure that we have data and facts to understand what is needed to protect them," one parent said.

Some parents voiced support for many of the covered topics. Still, most spoke out about the detailed sexual questions.

"This was a gross lapse in judgment," another parent said.

The district said it was a public health consultant who made additions to definitions used in this year's survey.

Two parents who did not want their children to take the survey have now filed complaints with the US Department of Education, saying the school broke the law, and they have the support of others who are demanding change.

"Let’s keep our schools centered on learning and not social agendas. Our children deserve better. And Conti, you need to step down," said one parent, referring to Burlington schools superintendent Dr. Eric Conti.

Why was he sufficiently interested in pasteurisation to ask questions about it?

It will not be necessary for me to say much about the benefits of pasteurized milk or, as it is known in these days, heat treated milk. Your Lordships are aware that a large number of people die each year through drinking milk contaminated with the bovine tuberculosis germ. I will not weary your Lordships with statistics, but will merely mention that if all the members of this House were killed twice a year—and I think your Lordships will agree that this would be a matter of some gravity—the number of deaths would be of the same order as that caused in the United Kingdom by drinking raw milk contaminated with the germ of tuberculosis. I need not remind your Lordships that the number of casualties from this germ far exceeds the number of deaths; but no precise figures are available to me on this point, though the number of casualties has been estimated at about five times the number of deaths. If we put the number of deaths per year at 1,600, the number of casualties will be between 7,000 and 8,000. These casualties, which require months of hospital treatment, are a source of misery and anxiety to their families and grave expense to the State.

§Of course tuberculosis is not the only disease caused by drinking raw milk contaminated with germs. Undulant fever claims an unknown number of victims each year—un-known because it is a difficult disease to diagnose—while outbreaks of typhoid and paratyphoid fever, dysentry, food poisoning, scarlet fever, and diphtheria 645are known to be caused from time to time by the drinking of raw milk. During the war, well authenticated milk-borne examples of each of these diseases were reported in the medical Press. Possibly the noble Lord who replies for the Government may be able to tell your Lordships if there have been any outbreaks of disease caused by drinking contaminated raw milk in the United Kingdom during 1946.

§It would appear obvious from the few words I have said that considerable benefits would accrue to the population of this country by removing a perfectly clear cut source of disease and death from the population's milk; and on the assumption that this side of the case is not in dispute, I will turn to the other side which concerns the arguments put forward by the opponents of pasteurization. May I say at the start that I neither can nor shall attempt to deal with the economic aspects of this matter? Your Lordships are well aware that one of the criticisms of any scheme involving the compulsory pasteurization of milk in the United Kingdom is that it will have an adverse effect on the small producer-retailers. Your Lordships may have something to say about the relative merits of killing off numbers of the population each year and maintaining the economic interests of a relatively small section of the community, though the words "as far as is practicable" in my Motion indicate that I appreciate the difficulties of extending any scheme of heat treatment to special or rural parts of the country. If I may, I shall return to the question of the producer-retailer later.

§The first objection with which I shall deal is that pasteurized milk tastes nasty, metallic, or at any rate different from raw milk. When I say to your Lordships that this is untrue, you will treat my statement with the same scepticism as the original statement that pasteurized milk tastes nasty. Your Lordships will require scientific or legal evidence one way or another. Such evidence could be obtained by submitting samples of raw and heat treated milk to some cross section of the community and seeing whether the members of this cross section could distinguish between the two types of milk more often than someone guessing or drawing the answer blindfold out of a hat.
