Jeffrey Edward Epstein appeared at his sentencing dressed comfortably in a blue blazer, blue shirt, jeans and gray sneakers. His attorney, Jack Goldberger, was at his side.

At the end of the 68-minute hearing, the 55-year-old silver-haired financier — accused of sexually abusing dozens of underage girls — was fingerprinted and handcuffed, just like any other criminal sentenced in Florida.

But inmate No. W35755 would not be treated like other convicted sex offenders in the state of Florida, which has some of the strictest sex offender laws in the nation.

Ten years before the #metoo movement raised awareness about the kid-glove handling of powerful men accused of sexual abuse, Epstein’s lenient sentence and his extraordinary treatment while in custody are still the source of consternation for the victims he was accused of molesting when they were minors.

Beginning as far back as 2001, Epstein lured a steady stream of underage girls to his Palm Beach mansion to engage in nude massages, masturbation, oral sex and intercourse, court and police records show. The girls — mostly from disadvantaged, troubled families — were recruited from middle and high schools around Palm Beach County. Epstein would pay the girls for massages and offer them further money to bring him new girls every time he was at his home in Palm Beach, according to police reports.

The girls, now in their late 20s and early 30s, allege in a series of federal civil lawsuits filed over the past decade that Epstein sexually abused hundreds of girls, not only in Palm Beach, but at his homes in Manhattan, New Mexico and in the Caribbean.

In 2007, the FBI had prepared a 53-page federal indictment charging Epstein with sex crimes that could have put him in federal prison for life. But then-Miami U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta signed off on a non-prosecution agreement, which was negotiated, signed and sealed so that no one would know the full scope of Epstein’s crimes. The indictment was shelved, never to be seen again.

Epstein instead pleaded guilty to lesser charges in state court, and was required to register as a sex offender. He was sentenced to 18 months incarceration.

But Epstein — who had a long list of powerful, politically connected friends — didn’t go to state prison like most sex offenders in Florida. Instead, the multimillionaire was assigned to a private wing of the Palm Beach County stockade, where he was able to hire his own security detail. Even then, he didn’t spend much time in a cell. He was allowed to go to his downtown West Palm Beach office for work release, up to 12 hours a day, six days a week, records show.

He was permitted to hire his own private psychologist for his required sex-offender counseling, and after his release from jail, his subsequent year of probation under house arrest was filled with trips on his corporate jet to Manhattan and to his home in the U.S. Virgin Islands — all approved by the courts with no objections from the state.

On the morning of his sentencing in 2008, none of Epstein’s victims were in the courtroom to protest his soft jail term or the unusual provisions of his incarceration and probation — and that was by design.

Emails and letters contained in court filings reveal the cozy, behind-the-scenes dealings between federal prosecutors and Epstein’s indomitable legal team during the run-up to his federal plea deal, as they discussed ways to minimize his criminal charges and avoid informing the girls about the details of the deal until after the case was resolved.

That arrangement benefited Epstein in a number of ways. Unlike other high-profile sex crime cases, federal prosecutors agreed to keep his sentencing quiet, thereby limiting media coverage. His underage victims — identified in FBI documents — weren’t told about the plea deal so they weren’t in court, where they could voice their objections and possibly sway the judge to give Epstein a harsher sentence or reject the agreement altogether.

The former Executive Director of the Carroll County Mental Health Advocates who is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the private non-profit over at least a two-year period – will not serve any jail time – following her “guilty” plea deal accepted in a Carroll County courtroom on Tuesday.

In January of 2024… about a month after Jodie Goodman was recognized as ‘Woman of The Year’ by the Carroll County Women Business Alliance – the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office began investigating allegations that Goodman had been misusing funds from the program. She was terminated from her position by the mental health advocates board of directors soon after.

The district attorney’s office on Tuesday said they are aware that “a theft occurred at least 150 times during a two-year period.”

The plea deal provides that thefts Goodman committed in 2022 would be considered one charge of theft by taking; a second charge of theft by taking would encompass the thefts committed in 2023.

Goodman had transferred CCMHA funding to debit cards – which she spent on personal items and gifts. She is alleged to have spent the non-profit’s funds on spray tans, nail salons, waxing, massages, gift cards, makeup, personal Amazon delivered to her home, DoorDash, food, and alcohol.

Goodman receives 30 years-probation (15 years per count). Goodman can see her probation time lessened significantly if she meets certain standards after 3 years.

Goodman is ordered to pay back more than $21k in restitution.

Goodman’s counsel – Villa Rica based attorney Mac Pilgrim spoke to WLBB Radio Tuesday evening. He said he believes that the deal agreed to by the prosecution, the defense and the judge in which Goodman avoids jail time – is typical of cases for clients accused of stealing similar amounts of funding – and having no history of theft or violence.

“In thefts of this nature, of this amount, generally speaking – unless the client has a particular history of theft or violence – probation sentences are common because the reason for probation sentences most times is that to make the victim whole. In this case – the county and the taxpayers, which I’m one, I live here and I pay taxes as well – is to make the victim whole and by paying back the $21 ,000 the county will be made financially whole for my client.

This has been a very, very hard time in her life. She has had, as I mentioned in court, she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She had been diagnosed with manic episodes. This has taken its toll on her, on her husband, on her family, on both of her children, both of whom were school-aged. And she is just now coming out of her manic state. She’s coming out of her very depressed state.

She admitted she did it. She never denied it. So I think people should get credit for coming forward and saying, yes, I did what you said I did, yes, I am guilty, and accepting the responsibility of that. So I think in that regard, this was, in fact, a fair plea.

I know there’s a lot of people – I’ve already seen some social media on this station’s Facebook page that people think differently of that, and they have a right to do that. However, I believe that this was, in fact, a fair plea, and I think it was fair to both sides. And the county will be made economically whole, which hopefully is what we want as a people – I think – is that we are not taken advantage of or made whole, and that’s going to happen. So I’m happy with it.”

The court revealed on Tuesday that Goodman’s family has already collected approximately 1-thousand dollars that would go towards the 21-thousand dollars required for restitution in this case.

Judge W. Travis Sakrison ruled that Goodman’s offenses would not fall under the First Offender Act… after hearing the victim-impact-statement presented by the victimized non-profit’s current chairman of the board.

Tractor Supply Company issued a statement announcing that it will stop sharing data with the Human Rights Campaign; nix diversity, equity, and inclusion positions; and ditch its carbon emissions goals. The Human Rights Campaign is a pro-LGBT advocacy group.

In the statement, the company listed five points, declaring that it will:

A witness who was just outside the Pennsylvania rally where a gunman apparently attempted to assassinate Donald Trump Saturday night said he tried to alert Secret Service agents to a rifle-wielding man he spotted “bear crawling” onto the roof of a nearby building before gunshots rang through the crowd.

“We’re pointing at the guy crawling up the roof,” the witness, identified only as Greg, told the BBC of the surreal moment. “We could clearly see him with a rifle.”

“I’m standing there pointing at him for two to three minutes,” he continued. “Secret Service is looking at us from the top of the barn, I’m pointing at the roof...and next thing you know, five shots rang out.”

Former president Trump was just minutes into his rally in Butler when around 10 popping sounds interrupted his speech, sending the crowd into chaos. The former president collapsed behind his podium, as red-capped supporters behind him screamed and tried to duck.

Secret Service agents immediately jumped onto the stage, hoisting up Trump, whose face was dripping with blood. He pumped his fist before agents helped him off stage and into his waiting motorcade.

Trump has since said he is “fine,” revealing in a graphic statement that he was “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.”

“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin,” he said.

The shooting left one spectator dead and another two critically injured. Law enforcement officials said that a Secret Service sniper killed the shooter, who was outside the security perimeter.

The shooting is being considered an assassination attempt, law enforcement said, and an investigation has been launched.

The FBI identified the gunman as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old resident of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

The witness, who was wearing a red Trump 2024 visor, told the BBC that it was “absolutely” clear the shooter — who he said was clad in “muted colors,” like “tan, tight clothing” — was killed.

“Secret Service blew his head off,” Greg said. “They crawled up on the roof, they had their guns pointed at him to make sure he was dead, he was dead. And that’s it. It was over.”

Others have come forward to share their harrowing accounts of the chaos. Another witness, an emergency room doctor, recalled how he sprung into action to try to save a shooting victim in the crowd.

“I heard the shots. I thought it was crackers to begin with,” the doctor, who had blood stains on his T-shirt, told a CBS News reporter.

Someone had been screaming “he was shot, he was shot” so the doctor rushed over. The spectator had been shot in the head, and the doctor said he could see “brain matter.”

“The guy had spun around was jammed between the benches and a head shot here,” the doctor explained.

He then performed CPR and chest compressions on the man.

“I was the only one that did it,” he told CBS News. “There’s a helicopter coming in to get him.”

Boston Globe reporter James Pindell said he noticed early on that Secret Service agents were pointing rifles at a spot away from the crowd. But it wasn’t until Trump was six minutes into his speech that there was a “loud popping noise.”

“When I looked up, the same agents were shooting in the same direction their guns had been pointed all along. Tomorrow, 20 years will have passed since the death of U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone, his wife Sheila, their daughter Marcia and four others in a plane crash near Eveleth, Minnesota. Today, a memorial stands on that road where I used to ride my bike. Meanwhile, as before, an important election approaches.

On Oct. 24, 2002, another midterm election accelerated toward its consequential finish. Wellstone, a Northfield Democrat in his second term, faced Republican challenger Norm Coleman of St. Paul, in a race that ranked high on national campaign watchlists.

Coleman had pulled ahead in the polls earlier in the campaign, but one recent poll showed Wellstone back on top. This was big news because Wellstone had just voted against authorizing the war in Iraq, the only senator facing a competitive race to do so.

As the candidates raced across the state during the final two weeks, Wellstone decided to divert his plane north to catch the funeral of the father of Iron Range lawmaker Tom Rukavina, a longtime ally. That plane wouldn’t make it to the small airport across the road from my grandparent’s house.

I watched the news splay across the TV screen between a split shift at the small daily newspaper I edited in 2002. I remembered how I met Wellstone that one summer in 1996, how he seemed excited that I would study journalism. Six years later I was right where I wanted to be. Or so I thought.
