A car has been driven into a crowd in the middle of the western German city of Mannheim, killing at least two people and leaving as many as two dozen injured before the driver was arrested.

The city centre has been evacuated and a pedestrian zone near its famous 19th-century water tower remains cordoned off.

Bild reported it had been told by a security source that there were two dead and at least 25 injured. The newspaper added that the driver was believed to have been a German citizen and had been taken to hospital for treatment. There is as yet no information about a possible motive.

Police confirmed that one individual had died and others had been wounded. “So far, we can give no more information about the number and severity of the injuries,” the local force said. “During the manhunt, which was initiated immediately, we were able to identify and detain a suspect.”

Illegal fireworks misfire, kill 8-year-old girl in California

(KTLA) – Police confirmed Saturday that an 8-year-old girl died after she was struck by an illegal fireworks display on the 4th of July in Orange County.

It was around 9:45 p.m., according to the Buena Park Police Department, when officers patrolling the area of the 8000 block of Cornflower Circle saw family members frantically carrying a child into a nearby home.

BPPD noted the officers were already in this neighborhood after “seeing a large quantity of fireworks detonate in the area.”

Upon seeing the family rushing the young girl inside, officers ran over to offer help and began administering life-saving efforts before the child was transported to the University of California, Irvine hospital.

The 8-year-old girl was tragically declared dead at the hospital. Her identity is being withheld out of respect for her family.

BPPD’s initial investigation revealed that a nearby homeowner set off a “large illegal fireworks display” on their street, which, after ignition, began misfiring toward the residence where the girl was at the time.

“This caused other illegal fireworks to ignite, which were near the child and others,” BPPD stated in a release. “At some point, the child had been struck, causing fatal injuries. Several other individuals were present, but no significant injuries were reported.”

As July 4th celebrations near, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is urging the public to prioritize fireworks safety. Mishandling fireworks can turn celebration into tragedy.

In 2024, there were 11 reported fireworks-related deaths, most involving misuse and device misfire/malfunctions. An estimated 14,700 people were injured by fireworks last year – a sharp increase of about 38% in deaths and about 52% in injuries respectively compared to 2023. There were an estimated 1,700 emergency room treated injuries in 2024 involving sparklers.

Adults ages 25 to 44 accounted for the largest share of reported injuries (32%), followed by people ages 15 to 24 (24%). The most frequently injured body parts were hands and fingers (36%) and head, face, and ears (22%). Burns were the most common injury, making up 37% of all emergency room visits.

Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit—hot enough to melt some metals.
Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy, in case of fire or other mishap.
Make sure fireworks are legal in your area, and only purchase and set off fireworks that are labeled for consumer (not professional) use.
Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.
Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.
Follow all instructions and warnings on fireworks and never hold them in hand unless instructions specify to do so.

(1.5) “At-risk adult” means an individual eighteen years of age or older who is susceptible to mistreatment or self-neglect because the individual is unable to perform or obtain services necessary for his or her health, safety, or welfare, or lacks sufficient understanding or capacity to make or communicate responsible decisions concerning his or her person or affairs.

One of the victims killed in a midtown Manhattan shooting spree on Monday was a prominent Blackstone executive leading the investment firm's real estate megafund, it has been revealed

Wesley LePatner, 43, was among the four people killed by a gunman who stormed the Park Avenue building where she worked, Blackstone confirmed.

LePatner was killed in the lobby of the building, where the shooter also killed an off-duty NYPD officer who was working as building security. She does not appear to have been specifically targeted by the shooter.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said the gunman appeared to have grievances with the NFL and was targeting the headquarters of the football league, which shares a building with Blackstone's main office. The NYPD says the shooter, 27-year-old Shane Tamura, was killed by police.

LePatner was a rising star at Blackstone, playing a key role in the investment firm's $325 billion real estate business.

After joining the firm in 2014, she became global head of Blackstone's $115 billion Core+ Real Estate business, focused on low-risk real estate investments worldwide—typically properties that are already income-generating and in good condition.

Within the Core+ strategy, she was also CEO of Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust (BREIT), the firm's commercial real estate megafund targeting individual investors.
