⁣Medical emergencies are rare, but hardly unprecedented in commercial flights.

It’s far less common when they involve the plane’s pilot – and that pilot dies.

That’s what happened Monday on an American Airlines flight between Phoenix and Boston.

Captain Michael Johnston, 57, was piloting the plane when he fell ill somewhere en route. The co-pilot landed the jet safely.

Crew members “took extraordinary care of Mike, each other and our customers,” airline CEO Doug Parker said in a statement sent to employees.

“We couldn’t be more proud of the teamwork this crew showed during an extremely difficult time.”

An autopsy and preliminary toxicology tests “showed that the death was the result of natural diseases,” the Onondaga County, New York, medical examiner’s office said – without offering specifics.

Johnston’s wife, BJ, told CNN affiliate KUTV-TV that her husband had a double bypass surgery in 2006. She said she was told he likely died of a heart attack.

“Whatever happened in the cockpit, none of us will know,” passenger Frank Cacciola told CNN affiliate WCVB-TV.

Cacciola was among the 147 passengers and five crew members aboard Flight 550 when it took off around midnight. Their Airbus A320 plane was being operated by U.S. Airways, which is part of American.

After the pilot fell ill, the flight was diverted to Syracuse, New York.

“Medical emergency, captain is incapacitated,” someone in the cockpit told an air traffic controller, according to audio posted to LiveATC.net. “Request handling for runway.”

Those on board knew something was wrong when a woman’s “quivering” voice came over the intercom, alerting them that the pilot was sick, passenger Peter McSwiggin told WCVB.

According to passenger Julia House, passengers waited for the body to be removed. They made it to Boston nearly five hours after their scheduled landing time.

Passengers expressed sadness about what happened and gratitude they arrived safely.

“If it wasn’t for the copilot using a cool head,” McSwiggin said, “it might have been more disastrous.”

A staffer for Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker 'accidentally posted' a video meant to be released next week which reveals Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro as Kamala Harris' running mate.

"Philly political sources have told me that a staffer connected with Mayor Cherelle Parker's team accidentally posted the video today," posted journalist Ernest Owens on X.

A witness who was just outside the Pennsylvania rally where a gunman apparently attempted to assassinate Donald Trump Saturday night said he tried to alert Secret Service agents to a rifle-wielding man he spotted “bear crawling” onto the roof of a nearby building before gunshots rang through the crowd.

“We’re pointing at the guy crawling up the roof,” the witness, identified only as Greg, told the BBC of the surreal moment. “We could clearly see him with a rifle.”

“I’m standing there pointing at him for two to three minutes,” he continued. “Secret Service is looking at us from the top of the barn, I’m pointing at the roof...and next thing you know, five shots rang out.”

Former president Trump was just minutes into his rally in Butler when around 10 popping sounds interrupted his speech, sending the crowd into chaos. The former president collapsed behind his podium, as red-capped supporters behind him screamed and tried to duck.

Secret Service agents immediately jumped onto the stage, hoisting up Trump, whose face was dripping with blood. He pumped his fist before agents helped him off stage and into his waiting motorcade.

Trump has since said he is “fine,” revealing in a graphic statement that he was “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.”

“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin,” he said.

The shooting left one spectator dead and another two critically injured. Law enforcement officials said that a Secret Service sniper killed the shooter, who was outside the security perimeter.

The shooting is being considered an assassination attempt, law enforcement said, and an investigation has been launched.

The FBI identified the gunman as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old resident of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

The witness, who was wearing a red Trump 2024 visor, told the BBC that it was “absolutely” clear the shooter — who he said was clad in “muted colors,” like “tan, tight clothing” — was killed.

“Secret Service blew his head off,” Greg said. “They crawled up on the roof, they had their guns pointed at him to make sure he was dead, he was dead. And that’s it. It was over.”

Others have come forward to share their harrowing accounts of the chaos. Another witness, an emergency room doctor, recalled how he sprung into action to try to save a shooting victim in the crowd.

“I heard the shots. I thought it was crackers to begin with,” the doctor, who had blood stains on his T-shirt, told a CBS News reporter.

Someone had been screaming “he was shot, he was shot” so the doctor rushed over. The spectator had been shot in the head, and the doctor said he could see “brain matter.”

“The guy had spun around was jammed between the benches and a head shot here,” the doctor explained.

He then performed CPR and chest compressions on the man.

“I was the only one that did it,” he told CBS News. “There’s a helicopter coming in to get him.”

Boston Globe reporter James Pindell said he noticed early on that Secret Service agents were pointing rifles at a spot away from the crowd. But it wasn’t until Trump was six minutes into his speech that there was a “loud popping noise.”

“When I looked up, the same agents were shooting in the same direction their guns had been pointed all along. I knew they were shooting because I could see smoke from their guns,” he wrote. “I had a clear view of the stage, but at that moment, I was typing up what Trump was saying. When I looked at the podium again, the agents appeared to have Trump on the ground, protecting him. Then other agents were on the stage.”

He said the crowd was in total “shock,” with most crouching down as they tried to take cover.

“After Trump had been escorted to his car and people sensed the rally was over and they were safe, the crowd turned on the media,” Pindell said. “The crowd was angry. Middle fingers were everywhere. They asked the press if they were happy and blamed the media. ‘You did this,’ they said to reporters.”

Despite increased international attention and resources from states and other non-governmental institutions, the number of people falling victim to human trafficking around the world continues to grow. Between 2008 and 2019 the number of human trafficking victims identified worldwide more than quadrupled from around 30,000 to nearly 120,000. In the United States, the sheer number of female victims is reflected in the dominant share of women in calls to the national hotline for victims of human trafficking. Moreover, there are also significant gender differences among the victims of forced labor; while women often are recruited for domestic work as well as illicit purposes, men are overrepresented in the construction industry.

On the international level, South and Central Asia was the region with the highest number of trafficking victims in 2022. Despite this, the highest number of prosecutions related to human trafficking in 2021 were conducted in East Asia and the Pacific. Accordingly, these prosecutions resulted in numerous convictions. With the number of convictions worldwide more than doubling between 2009 and 2019, there is some reason to believe that improvements are being made in removing the terror of human trafficking and exploitation from many of the world’s most vulnerable people. You’ve probably started hearing about Project 2025 as the general election draws closer, but what is it?

Project 2025 is a nearly 1,000-page document. It was launched last year, and the people behind it call it a “presidential transition project.”

Basically, a number of conservative organizations got together to prepare a roadmap for the next Republican president.

The effort is led by a Washington, D.C., think tank – The Heritage Foundation – and involves a number of former Trump Administration officials like Ken Cuccinelli, Rick Dearborn, Christopher Miller and Peter Navarro.

Their idea is to have a plan ready to go on day one to reshape the government.

Much of this would happen by reinstating “Schedule F,” which is a Trump-era executive order that would reclassify tens of thousands of federal workers so they can be fired more easily.

There are about 2 million federal workers in government agencies across the country, and they remain in those jobs no matter who is the president. Right now, only about 4,000 of them are considered political appointees who typically change with each administration.

Schedule F would put a large number of government career employees at risk and, in many cases, replace them with political appointees.

That’s just one piece of the plan. Other parts call for dismantling the Department of Homeland Security and reassigning some of its functions, and even eliminating the federal Department of Education.

Also, included is a proposed top-to-bottom overhaul of the Department of Justice, including curbing its ability to operate independently from the White House.

Project 2025 isn’t just about how the government functions, but also who it reaches — with agendas that could have immediate effects on families. Page 592 of the plan outlines big changes to who earns overtime, saying that “overtime requirements may discourage employers from offering certain fringe benefits.”

The agenda advances the push for abortion restrictions, specifically calling for reversing the approval of chemical abortion drugs, such as mifepristone.

Project 2025 states that all of this could be enacted by installing top allies into acting administrative roles to bypass the Senate confirmation process.

That wouldn’t be the only part of the Project 2025 plan that would bypass Congress. Remember, presidents typically rely on both the House and the Senate to make laws and put policies in place. Many legal scholars say Project 2025 leans into a view of executive power that suggests the president has broad authority to act alone.

On April 20 — Nazi leader Adolf Hitler’s birthday — a previous “day of action,” White Lives Matter Michigan was able to “permeate censorship” and briefly display “images of Hitler and a racist message on roadside displays,” according to The Detroit News.

The antisemitic nature of the group was on full display on the July 20 “day of action,” when the group who marched through Howell also made their way to the Latson Road/I-96 overpass in nearby Genoa Township, where they hung Nazi and KKK flags over the side, while a video uploaded by the Livingston Post shows one of the protestors yelling “We love Hitler. We love Trump,” through a loudspeaker.
