A man who was shot and wounded by New York State Police last week has been identified as a central Maine doctor with a history of infractions and license suspensions, most recently in 2021 for granting COVID-19 vaccine exemptions to more than 100 health care workers he had neither seen nor examined.

Paul Gosselin, 63, of Augusta was shot on July 2. In a press release issued the next day, New York State Police said troopers in Sullivan County received a report of a suspicious vehicle at a business on State Route 97 in Barryville.

Ultimately they found the man, later identified as Gosselin, who claimed to have a gun and said he would shoot the troopers, according to New York state police.

Gosselin allegedly fled to another business on the highway, got out of the vehicle then got back in and drove at a constable from the town of Lumberland, who was on foot near Gosselin’s vehicle.

A state trooper saw the scene unfolding and shot at the vehicle, with one of the shots hitting Gosselin.

Gosselin was brought to an area hospital and listed in stable condition at the time of the July 3 press release. On Monday, a New York State Police spokesperson told the Kennebec Journal Gosselin was still in the hospital.

The newspaper reported that Gosselin had been listed in a national missing persons database prior to the incident, and it was unclear why he was in New York.

Gosselin, an osteopathic doctor, had had multiple run-ins with the state licensing board before the improper vaccine exemptions. His license was suspended in 2014, according to board records, for allegedly prescribing himself medication and practicing medicine after ingesting drugs.

He was also disciplined for “unprofessional conduct” in 2002 after calling pharmacies and pretending to be his own physician’s assistant to fill prescriptions, according to the Morning Sentinel, and in 1999, for responding to an emergency call after he had consumed alcohol.

It’s far less common when they involve the plane’s pilot – and that pilot dies.

That’s what happened Monday on an American Airlines flight between Phoenix and Boston.

Captain Michael Johnston, 57, was piloting the plane when he fell ill somewhere en route. The co-pilot landed the jet safely.

Crew members “took extraordinary care of Mike, each other and our customers,” airline CEO Doug Parker said in a statement sent to employees.

An autopsy and preliminary toxicology tests “showed that the death was the result of natural diseases,” the Onondaga County, New York, medical examiner’s office said – without offering specifics.

According to passenger Julia House, passengers waited for the body to be removed. They made it to Boston nearly five hours after their scheduled landing time.

Passengers expressed sadness about what happened and gratitude they arrived safely.

“If it wasn’t for the copilot using a cool head,” McSwiggin said, “it might have been more disastrous.”

A staffer for Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker 'accidentally posted' a video meant to be released next week which reveals Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro as Kamala Harris' running mate.

A witness who was just outside the Pennsylvania rally where a gunman apparently attempted to assassinate Donald Trump Saturday night said he tried to alert Secret Service agents to a rifle-wielding man he spotted “bear crawling” onto the roof of a nearby building before gunshots rang through the crowd.

“We’re pointing at the guy crawling up the roof,” the witness, identified only as Greg, told the BBC of the surreal moment. “We could clearly see him with a rifle.”

“I’m standing there pointing at him for two to three minutes,” he continued. “Secret Service is looking at us from the top of the barn, I’m pointing at the roof...and next thing you know, five shots rang out.”

Former president Trump was just minutes into his rally in Butler when around 10 popping sounds interrupted his speech, sending the crowd into chaos. The former president collapsed behind his podium, as red-capped supporters behind him screamed and tried to duck.

Secret Service agents immediately jumped onto the stage, hoisting up Trump, whose face was dripping with blood. He pumped his fist before agents helped him off stage and into his waiting motorcade.

Trump has since said he is “fine,” revealing in a graphic statement that he was “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.”

“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin,” he said.

The shooting left one spectator dead and another two critically injured. Law enforcement officials said that a Secret Service sniper killed the shooter, who was outside the security perimeter.

The shooting is being considered an assassination attempt, law enforcement said, and an investigation has been launched.

The FBI identified the gunman as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old resident of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

The witness, who was wearing a red Trump 2024 visor, told the BBC that it was “absolutely” clear the shooter — who he said was clad in “muted colors,” like “tan, tight clothing” — was killed.

“Secret Service blew his head off,” Greg said. “They crawled up on the roof, they had their guns pointed at him to make sure he was dead, he was dead. And that’s it. It was over.”

Others have come forward to share their harrowing accounts of the chaos. Another witness, an emergency room doctor, recalled how he sprung into action to try to save a shooting victim in the crowd.

“I heard the shots. I thought it was crackers to begin with,” the doctor, who had blood stains on his T-shirt, told a CBS News reporter.

Someone had been screaming “he was shot, he was shot” so the doctor rushed over. The spectator had been shot in the head, and the doctor said he could see “brain matter.”

“The guy had spun around was jammed between the benches and a head shot here,” the doctor explained.

He then performed CPR and chest compressions on the man.

“I was the only one that did it,” he told CBS News. “There’s a helicopter coming in to get him.”

Boston Globe reporter James Pindell said he noticed early on that Secret Service agents were pointing rifles at a spot away from the crowd. But it wasn’t until Trump was six minutes into his speech that there was a “loud popping noise.”

“When I looked up, the same agents were shooting in the same direction their guns had been pointed all along. I knew they were shooting because I could see smoke from their guns,” he wrote. “I had a clear view of the stage, but at that moment, I was typing up what Trump was saying. When I looked at the podium again, the agents appeared to have Trump on the ground, protecting him. Then other agents were on the stage.”

He said the crowd was in total “shock,” with most crouching down as they tried to take cover.

“After Trump had been escorted to his car and people sensed the rally was over and they were safe, the crowd turned on the media,” Pindell said. “The crowd was angry. Middle fingers were everywhere. They asked the press if they were happy and blamed the media. ‘You did this,’ they said to reporters.”

Human trafficking - Statistics & Facts

Despite increased international attention and resources from states and other non-governmental institutions, the number of people falling victim to human trafficking around the world continues to grow. Between 2008 and 2019 the number of human trafficking victims identified worldwide more than quadrupled from around 30,000 to nearly 120,000. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of trafficking victims fell as travel restrictions made human trafficking more difficult, but were back at pre-pandemic levels in 2022. However, trafficking in persons is an illegal practice that is shaded in secrecy, and it is therefore nearly impossible to measure it in its entirety.

Forms of trafficking

The two primary forms of exploitation people are trafficked for are forced labor and sexual exploitation, with regional variances on the proportion of each. Although sexual exploitation remains the primary form, the prevalence of forced labor as the criminal’s motivation has grown in the last decade. This, in part, explains the rising share of male victims in human trafficking. The vast majority of trafficking victims trafficked for this purpose are men, some 68 percent in 2020.

Trafficking in women

While the majority of men are trafficked for forced labor purposes, women are primarily victims of sexual exploitation, with over 90 percent of people trafficked for this purpose in 2020 being women. Whilst forced labor and exploitation of other forms certainly are an issue, the disturbing images of women falling victim to the global sex trade remain as omnipresent as ever. In the United States, the sheer number of female victims is reflected in the dominant share of women in calls to the national hotline for victims of human trafficking. Moreover, there are also significant gender differences among the victims of forced labor; while women often are recruited for domestic work as well as illicit purposes, men are overrepresented in the construction industry.

Fight against human trafficking

On the international level, South and Central Asia was the region with the highest number of trafficking victims in 2022. Despite this, the highest number of prosecutions related to human trafficking in 2021 were conducted in East Asia and the Pacific. Accordingly, these prosecutions resulted in numerous convictions. With the number of convictions worldwide more than doubling between 2009 and 2019, there is some reason to believe that improvements are being made in removing the terror of human trafficking and exploitation from many of the world’s most vulnerable people. However, as the number of cases fell with the pandemic, so did the number of convictions, and it is assumed that the number of traffickers continues to be far higher than those prosecuted and convicted.
