Jeffrey Edward Epstein appeared at his sentencing dressed comfortably in a blue blazer, blue shirt, jeans and gray sneakers. His attorney, Jack Goldberger, was at his side.

At the end of the 68-minute hearing, the 55-year-old silver-haired financier — accused of sexually abusing dozens of underage girls — was fingerprinted and handcuffed, just like any other criminal sentenced in Florida.

But inmate No. W35755 would not be treated like other convicted sex offenders in the state of Florida, which has some of the strictest sex offender laws in the nation.

Ten years before the #metoo movement raised awareness about the kid-glove handling of powerful men accused of sexual abuse, Epstein’s lenient sentence and his extraordinary treatment while in custody are still the source of consternation for the victims he was accused of molesting when they were minors.

Beginning as far back as 2001, Epstein lured a steady stream of underage girls to his Palm Beach mansion to engage in nude massages, masturbation, oral sex and intercourse, court and police records show. The girls — mostly from disadvantaged, troubled families — were recruited from middle and high schools around Palm Beach County. Epstein would pay the girls for massages and offer them further money to bring him new girls every time he was at his home in Palm Beach, according to police reports.

The girls, now in their late 20s and early 30s, allege in a series of federal civil lawsuits filed over the past decade that Epstein sexually abused hundreds of girls, not only in Palm Beach, but at his homes in Manhattan, New Mexico and in the Caribbean.

In 2007, the FBI had prepared a 53-page federal indictment charging Epstein with sex crimes that could have put him in federal prison for life. But then-Miami U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta signed off on a non-prosecution agreement, which was negotiated, signed and sealed so that no one would know the full scope of Epstein’s crimes. The indictment was shelved, never to be seen again.

Epstein instead pleaded guilty to lesser charges in state court, and was required to register as a sex offender. He was sentenced to 18 months incarceration.

But Epstein — who had a long list of powerful, politically connected friends — didn’t go to state prison like most sex offenders in Florida. Instead, the multimillionaire was assigned to a private wing of the Palm Beach County stockade, where he was able to hire his own security detail. Even then, he didn’t spend much time in a cell. He was allowed to go to his downtown West Palm Beach office for work release, up to 12 hours a day, six days a week, records show.

He was permitted to hire his own private psychologist for his required sex-offender counseling, and after his release from jail, his subsequent year of probation under house arrest was filled with trips on his corporate jet to Manhattan and to his home in the U.S. Virgin Islands — all approved by the courts with no objections from the state.

On the morning of his sentencing in 2008, none of Epstein’s victims were in the courtroom to protest his soft jail term or the unusual provisions of his incarceration and probation — and that was by design.

Emails and letters contained in court filings reveal the cozy, behind-the-scenes dealings between federal prosecutors and Epstein’s indomitable legal team during the run-up to his federal plea deal, as they discussed ways to minimize his criminal charges and avoid informing the girls about the details of the deal until after the case was resolved.

That arrangement benefited Epstein in a number of ways. Unlike other high-profile sex crime cases, federal prosecutors agreed to keep his sentencing quiet, thereby limiting media coverage. His underage victims — identified in FBI documents — weren’t told about the plea deal so they weren’t in court, where they could voice their objections and possibly sway the judge to give Epstein a harsher sentence or reject the agreement altogether.

⁣Video of Lakeland police officers punching teen sparks outrage

LAKELAND, Fla. - The Lakeland Police Department is reviewing an arrest made by two of its officers. It involves a 16-year-old and the video appears to show one officer punching him in the head and another using a taser.

Community activists are calling this an act of police brutality. The confrontation between the officers and the teen started at a Memorial Day pool party, where the teen is accused of trespassing.

Now, community leaders are calling for criminal charges against the officers and said they aren’t surprised by this latest incident involving Lakeland police.

"This place is one of the most dangerous places in Polk County," said Pastor Clayton Cowart with the Poor Minority Justice Association. "This is police brutality in every way and I think this is child abuse."

On Monday, police were called to a pool party at an apartment complex. Some of the teens were accused of trespassing.

In the video circulating on social media, you can see two officers punch and hit the teen multiple times. At one point, an officer grabs the teen by his hair, before another tases the 16-year-old.

"He’s traumatized, his mother is traumatized, the other kids that were there are traumatized," said Cowart.

The teen was charged with trespassing, battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

According to the arrest affidavit, the officer said the 16-year-old was uncooperative and punched the officer in the face.

Lakeland PD said that Chief Sam Taylor has been informed of the incident, has met with community leaders about it and has already requested an administrative review by the Office of Professional Standards.

"I don’t believe that there is going to be any video that shows the young man struck the officer first. What I will say is this, where was his de-escalation tactics?" said Cowart.

FOX 13 requested the body cam footage, but at this time it is not being released. Some activists are questioning whether it will be.

"Lakeland has this culture of not playing the video, so let's see if we have the video first," said Cowart.

Some community leaders will meet with the police chief later this week. Cowart said there is a protest planned for Saturday outside the Lakeland Police Department at 6 p.m.

Every weekend, we pick a movie you can stream that dovetails with current events. Old, new, blockbuster, arthouse: They’re all fair game. What you can count on is a weekend watch that sheds new light on the week that was. The movie of the week for January 21 through 27 is Gaslight (1944), which is available to stream on Filmstruck or digitally rent on Amazon, YouTube, iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu.

The term “gaslighting” has gotten thrown around a lot over the past year, mostly in reference to political campaign tactics — when candidates claimed something had (or hadn’t) happened, and refused, when confronted with contradictory evidence, to acknowledge otherwise. Lauren Duca most famously wrote about the term for Teen Vogue in a piece titled “Donald Trump Is Gaslighting America,” for which she caught some heat and also raised the profile of Teen Vogue.

But as with most terms that quickly become popular, a lot of people don’t know what it really means. Does it just mean deceiving people? Or is it something more specific?

You could look up definitions, but the best way to understand gaslighting is to go to the source. George Cukor’s Gaslight — based on a 1938 play by Patrick Hamilton — stars Ingrid Bergman as a naive, sweet young woman named Paula who as a young girl witnessed the murder of her beloved aunt (and guardian) at their home. Years later, in Italy, she meets and marries dashing Gregory (Charles Boyer), who returns with her to London to live in the house she inherited from her aunt, which is also the house where the murder occurred.

But slowly, over time, Paula begins to doubt her sanity. Gregory tells her that she’s becoming forgetful and fitful, acting in irregular ways. He confines her to the house, and tells everyone she’s not well. At night she hears knocking in the walls. She sees the gas lighting dim. But he tells her she’s imagining things.

The film also features Joseph Cotten as a detective who begins to suspect that something’s up, and Angela Lansbury as the saucy housemaid. It was nominated for seven Oscars in 1945 (including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay).

And while I find the film’s ending unsatisfactory — it lets Gregory off the hook by painting him as less of a sociopath and more of a very determined and innovative thief — the scenes in which Gregory is flat-out lying to Paula, coolly watching her come to pieces, are utterly chilling. It’s abuse, and an insidious kind, since the abuser doesn’t leave any marks.

The term “gaslighting” comes from the movie, and so its definition is rather specific: when a person lies for their own gain to another person so repeatedly and with so much confidence that the victim begins to doubt her own sanity. And, as the film puts it, a bit of Stockholm Syndrome develops as well: The victim, now uncertain that she can perceive reality correctly, becomes dependent on the gaslighter, more attached to him than ever.

The trope has been repeated throughout film history (The Girl on the Train is a great example), but Gaslight still holds up — especially in a week where people are throwing around terms like “gaslighter-in-chief” to describe the newly inaugurated president. And if you can stomach watching Gaslight, it’s a useful reminder that just because you feel like you’re going crazy doesn’t mean you are.

MY DECADE OF POLITICAL ACTIVISM on behalf of White nationalism began in October 1999, when I was ten. I gave my first public interview to the salacious daytime talk show The Jenny Jones Show. It was a trip of firsts: one of the first times I left my home state of Florida; my first trip to Chicago; and my first time in the North at all. It was the first time I rode in a limo, when they picked us up and dropped us off at our hotel. At that hotel, on the morning before we headed to the studio for filming, I got to order my first pay-per-view movie (the remake of The Mummy with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz). At the studio, it was my first experience in a greenroom. It was my first time in the public eye, my first time out front, and my first time claiming publicly my intention to lead White nationalism into its next generation.

The experience was genuinely fun. It was also terrifying, and it taught me terrible lessons.

The Jenny Jones Show was a nationally syndicated daytime talk show filmed in the same studios in the NBC Tower in Chicago as its rival The Jerry Springer Show. Jenny and Jerry—and Geraldo and Maury and others like them—often brought on unsophisticated guests to face a shouting and brawling live audience, to great commercial success; The Jerry Springer Show, by far the leader of the genre, ended that season with ratings just behind Oprah.

The episode they invited me and my dad for was titled “Hateful Websites on the Internet” and ran on October 4, 1999. Several years before, David Duke, my dad’s oldest friend, had negotiated to appear on The Jerry Springer Show in a one-on-one interview, away from the jeering audience. Thanks to that negotiation, David was able to speak to Springer’s huge viewership without having to face the demeaning taunts of the studio audience. For my first interview, my dad negotiated something similar, allowing me to give a one-on-one interview offstage. In addition, the producers also offered to pay for a trip to DisneyQuest, the virtual reality amusement park that had recently opened downtown.

My dad asked me over and over, even up to the day of filming, if I was sure I wanted to give the interview. I felt listened to and respected, and I felt like I was fully consenting to my participation. I believed in the cause, as much as a curious child can believe in any ideology, and I was excited to begin advancing it myself. A month earlier, I had created a kids’ page on Stormfront, the website my dad had founded. I had already seen reporters coming to the house to interview my dad, and I’d become familiar with the hostile way they wrote about us as “hateful.”

When we arrived at the set, my dad went out with the other guests, including other White power leaders and two daughters of Fred Phelps, the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, a group known for picketing the funerals of soldiers and queer people. The studio was built in the middle of a large open room, so the crew, the guests who hadn’t gone on yet, the kids of the Westboro family, and I could stay in the greenroom or walk all around the set. I watched the lighting crew and cinematographers, while I heard the echoes of the angry crowd through the thin prop walls. The crew were friendly and asked me if I needed anything while I hung out with them behind the scenes. I refused the makeup artist’s offers several times, because I didn’t think makeup was for boys. I remember her explaining that it wouldn’t be visible, and was only meant to keep the glare of the stage lights from shining off my face. I held firm, committed to upholding my sense of gender norms, and she relented.

When the time for my interview came, the crew turned on fog machines that produced a dramatic cloud around the stool the pro- ducers led me to. I was near the corner of the stage, behind two panels they slid open to reveal me there...

Under the Internal Revenue Code, qualified presidential candidates may opt to receive money from the Presidential Election Campaign Fund, which is a fund on the books of the U.S. Treasury.

The FEC administers the public funding program by determining which candidates are eligible to receive the funds. The Secretary of the Treasury makes the payments.

Committees receiving public funds must agree to comply with spending limits and to keep detailed records of their financial activities. After the elections, the FEC audits each publicly funded committee. If an audit reveals that a committee has exceeded the spending limits or used public funds for impermissible purposes, the committee must pay back an appropriate amount to the U.S. Treasury.

While a candidate may raise money from many different sources, only contributions from individuals are matchable; contributions from PACs and party committees are not. Candidates must agree to use public funds only for campaign expenses, and they must comply with spending limits.

Major party nominees are eligible for a general election grant. The basic $20 million grant is adjusted for inflation each presidential election year. Nominees who accept the funds must agree not to raise private contributions (from individuals, PACs or party committees), apart from certain exceptions, and to limit their campaign expenditures to the amount of public funds they receive. They may use the funds only for campaign expenses.

A minor or new party presidential candidate may qualify for some public funds after the general election if that candidate receives at least five percent of the popular vote.

Movements need whistle-blowers, whistle-blowers need movements

In the last scene of “Citizenfour,” Laura Poitras’s acclaimed new documentary about National Security Agency whistle-blower Edward Snowden, he and Glenn Greenwald are shown chatting over scribbles on pieces of paper. The implication is that there’s a new government whistle-blower, someone higher up than Snowden who has leaked damning new documents to journalist Jeremy Scahill, Greenwald and Poitras’ colleague at The Intercept. Last week, another whistle-blower went public, but not from the government.

In a feature for Rolling Stone, Matt Taibbi tells the story of Alayne Fleischmann, a former securities lawyer for JPMorgan Chase who the bank spent $9 billion trying to keep quiet.

Taibbi describes Fleischmann’s position as that of a “quality-control officer,” evaluating securities to ensure that the bank wasn’t taking in spoiled product to sell out again. The trouble was that the loans were rotten from the start: Chase, along with most other major banks, issued sub-prime mortgages to borrowers they knew would have difficulty paying them back. Fleischmann recounts one loan issued to a manicurist approved after claiming an annual income of $117,000 — by Fleischmann’s calculation, a sum it would have taken the same manicurist 488 days to accrue.

The real trouble came when these risky loans were grouped together en masse and repacked into mortgage-backed securities — which are nothing new in financial markets, but banks like Chase had discovered that by simply lowering their standards (and flat-out deceiving borrowers) they could begin selling more of them and raking in more profit. These packages were sold off to pension funds and other investors without mention of the fact that it was only a matter of time before their value plummeted.

Taibbi describes one instance in which Fleischman’s team was asked to evaluate a $900 million security from a firm called GreenPoint. They quickly realized the package contained loans that had already been rejected by either Chase or another bank. They were pressured to repackage the GreenPoint security as if it were brand new. As Taibbi, noted, it was “like putting a fresh coat of paint on a bunch of junkyard wrecks and selling them as new cars.”

When the loans finally started going sour in 2007, so did the economy. Soon after the stock market crashed in October, millions lost pensions and 401Ks. The borrowers who’d taken out the sub-prime loans in the first place — and were promised better lives — had already found their property seized by the same banks who’d lied to them in the first place. Property values sunk to the point where even relatively secure homeowners were left out on the streets:

Fleischmann tried to report the toxic loans back in 2006 when she started working for Chase, but hit a series of walls: First from her supervisors, then from the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission. When she finally did get through to regulatory agencies, after she had quit her job with Chase and moved back to her native Canada, Attorney General Eric Holder’s office within the Justice Department used her testimony from the ensuing investigation to broker a deal with Chase to the tune of $9 billion. Chase would avoid prosecution, and Fleischmann would be sworn to secrecy.

Before coming forward to Taibbi, even Fleischmann’s family was unaware of the scope of her work on Wall Street. Explaining why she finally decided to break her silence, she told Taibbi, “I could be sued into bankruptcy … I could lose my license to practice law. I could lose everything. But if we don’t start speaking up, this is really all we’re going to get: The biggest financial cover-up in history.” Still, it may be months or years before JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and his co-workers see trial.

All this begs the question: What should the relationship between movements and whistle-blowers be? Unsettling as they are, the details above will hardly surprise those familiar with Wall Street’s usual sleaze. They may just offer the legal grounding necessary to bring Dimon and company to justice. Occupy Wall Street is somewhere in the background of Taibbi’s piece, but who’s continuing to hold the fire under the Justice Department to stop brokering deals and start pressing charges? Taibbi mentions that repeated government deals between banks and so-called regulators fed the fire of Occupy, but why is it that — almost nine years later — not one person involved with the GreenPoint deal has been held to account?

⁣Stephen Mitford Goodson died of a "heart attack" in 2018, but I'd like to think he'd approve of this narration. I've hated fractional reserve central banking since watching The Money Masters nearly 10 years ago, but this book took my hatred to new levels—especially because I'm of mostly German descent. I bought 10 copies to spread the word, but most people will listen to a 3 hour podcast before reading a single sentence in a book, so I decided to make this.

I own no rights to this book and will never try to make a single penny from it. At first, I just wanted a clean recording. Then I wanted to include the text...and the footnotes...and the images...and then I figured every slide should have an image...and soon this project consumed five months of my free time. When I couldn't find an image that represented a given slide, I tried to find a beautiful photo of that country's scenery or its currency, political cartoons from the era, or relevant images from my meme folder. When all else fails, you get the wall of text.

I'll be the first to admit that Stephen Mitford Goodson didn't get everything right (particularly nukes), but on balance, I believe his book is hugely important and needs to be understood by more people. Yes, this is dense, and arguably too fast. But I hope you, dear reader, investigate every single claim in this book for yourself. I hope you make some nutritious food (no seed oils!) while showing this to friends. I hope you become a beacon of remoralization for everyone in your circle. It's not going to be easy, but we ARE are going to make it.
