Preston Martin figured the retro blue Volkswagen van he slept in for a year during college was a goner, given that he parked it in a Malibu neighborhood just before the Palisades fire ripped through, reducing homes and cars to rubble and charred metal.

So the surfboard maker was stunned to find that the vehicle survived. Not only that, a photo of the vibrant bus taken by an Associated Press photographer was circulating widely on television and online, giving viewers a measure of joy.

“There is magic in that van,” Martin, 24, said Tuesday in an interview with AP. “It makes no sense why this happened. It should have been toasted, but here we are.”

The neighborhood remains closed to the public, and neither Martin nor the friend and business partner to whom he sold the van last summer, Megan Krystle Weinraub, have been able to inspect the vehicle. In other photos of the van, it appears to have soot on its windows, Martin said.

Martin purchased the 1977 Volkswagen Type 2 somewhat on a whim sometime around his junior year studying mechanical engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

His mother, Tracey Martin, of Irvine, yelled at him for blowing his money, but Martin told her he’d save on rent by fixing up the inside and living in it his senior year, which he did. She came to love the bus, and sewed curtains for the windows.

Last summer he sold the van to Weinraub, 29, who designs surf and skate boards under the Vibrant Boards brand. Martin makes carbon fiber surfboards under Starlite.

On Jan. 5 the friends drove to go surfing with the van, which Weinraub calls Azul — Spanish for “blue.” Afterward Martin parked it on a flat spot up the hill from her apartment by the Getty Villa, as she is still learning to drive the manual transmission.

Two days later the Palisades fire erupted, and Weinraub fled with her dog, Bodi, and some dog food in her primary car. She felt sad about Azul, but that was minor compared with those who lost homes or loved ones.

On Thursday a neighbor sent her a photo. In the background was the bus, still blue and white and not at all damaged.

“I freaked out,” she said. “I was in the bathroom, and I screamed.”

She called Martin, who also freaked out. He called his mom, who was ecstatic. “I’ve never cried for a car before,” Tracey Martin texted her son.

They were even more surprised when the AP photo aired on television and popped up online.

“We made the news,” Martin said in a reel on Instagram, and Weinraub contacted the photographer.

Weinraub, whose home survived, does not know when she’ll be allowed back to her apartment or to Azul. The two are thrilled that the van’s survival has touched so many people.

“It’s so cool that it’s become this, like, beacon of hope,” Martin said. “Everything around it was toasted, just destroyed. And then here’s this bright blue shiny van, sitting right there.”

⁣Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Russian mercenary Wagner group, was killed when his private plane crashed in flames in Russia.

The aircraft was flying from Moscow to St Petersburg, with seven passengers and three crew. Everyone on board is reported to have died.

The news led to widespread speculation that President Putin and Russian military leaders may have been responsible for Yevgeny Prigozhin’s death. A Telegram channel with links to the Wagner group said that Prigozhin had died “as a result of actions of traitors of Russia”.

Prigozhin, whose Wagner forces had been fighting in support of Russia in Ukraine, led a failed mutiny against the Russian armed forces in June. At the time he moved his troops out of Ukraine, seizing the southern Russian city of Rostov on Don and threatening to march on Moscow. The uprising came after months of tension with Russian military commanders over the Ukraine conflict.

At the time, Russia's President Putin accused Wagner of being “traitors”. The stand-off was settled by a deal which allowed Wagner troops to move to Belarus or join the regular Russian army. Prigozhin himself agreed to relocate to Belarus but was apparently able to move freely afterwards, making a number of public appearances.

The plane crash came on the same day that the senior Russian general Sergei Surovikin was reportedly sacked as chief of the Russian air force. General Surovikin was known to have good relations with Prigozhin and had not been seen in public since the mutiny.

⁣Let’s talk “QAnon” for a second… For those who don’t follow it, think it’s a cult, or whatever… let me tell you my story. I came across the subject in 2018 as I was getting more curious about politics. Before then, I didn’t give a crap about politics until Donald Trump started to disrupt what I now have come to understand… The World Order of things. Pretty quickly, I realized something was wrong. I realized they were afraid of this man, Donald Trump. I saw how the media ignited racial hatred in people’s hearts… I saw how they’d lie about everything. I quickly realized that there was a darkness in our country I had never seen before… I didn’t see it because I lived in my own bubble, like many hard working Americans do. I saw the end of America once I realized how far we’ve spiraled away from common sense, from the rule of law, from logic, but more importantly…. We were moving further and further away from God. I began researching various subjects, trying to find more answers… Why was all this happening? What can be done? How can I help? That road eventually led me to Q. All the things I heard about it up to that point, I thought it was a group of crazy people.. But I started researching it… I wanted to know more about why the MSM was so adamant on disproving it… if it was just a “conspiracy”. The more I read and followed along, the more things made sense. And of course, some things didn’t. Over time, a great majority of the drops talked about the treason that had occured — the illegal treasonous spying on Trumps campaign, FISA, Crossfire Hurricane, and elections not being as secure as we may have believed. I use Q as a research tool.. There’s a great deal of information in there that has factually happened.. Let me also address the elephant in the room… the “decodes”… Decodes are a very slippery slope, because they are always someone’s interpretation using Q, which a lot of times are nonsensical. Just like J6 had really bad people trying to make MAGA as a whole look bad, the same can be said about anons. There are some really bad actors that work really hard everyday not only divide and misinform our people, but to make sure anons look stupid… and sometimes crazy… I call them the 80/20 people because they speak just enough truth to get you to trust them (80), only to misinform you on the most important subjects (20). For anyone curious about Q… or just want to understand it better, just start reading it and you will quickly understand what I eventually came to understand… The US is deeply entrenched with evil people who hate this country… And that only through God can we overcome this great evil. ⁣Saw this on Brighteon this morning...and NOT anywhere else; and because of the social media ban, it isn't easily shareable

When I came forward about my abuse, I remember being asked by a detective from the CSE team whether I had “consented” to sexual activity at any point.

I was five when I was first abused.

And like 96.5% of sex abuse cases, CPS refused to take my abusers to court.

Then, I went on national TV with Mark Steyn to discuss child sexual exploitation in my hometown and the fact that little girls are still being raped and exploited on council estates in Telford today.

The police came banging on my door the next day after searching every address I’d ever lived at.

They tried to demand that I go to the police station for an “interview” and tried to intimidate me into silence because:

“When you go on national TV to discuss grooming gangs, you should expect us to come to you.”

This isn’t a thing of the past. This is the present.
